Heartburn and ulcer drugs increase risk of pneumonia, study says

by Mike Adams (see all articles by this author)

If you regularly take heartburn drugs like Nexium, Pepcid or Prilosec, you're increasing your odds of getting pneumonia, say Dutch researchers. A study of more than 300,000 patients revealed the link, which is likely due to the fact that harmful bacteria are normally destroyed by strong stomach acid. Since heartburn drugs suppress the production of stomach acid, they simultaneously increase the odds of survival for infectious agents.
