Also, diabetics should take at least 50 mg of vitamin b-6 per day, as the level of intracellular magnesium is dependent on vitamin b-6 intake. Without B-6, it is difficult for magnesium to readily enter the cell. CALCIUM Calcium is an alkalinizing mineral that helps neutralize the acidity of diabetes. It has not been well studied in relation to diabetes, but following the use of calcium as a supplement, a patient of mine had decreased fasting plasma insulin levels and a significant increase in insulin sensitivity.

It has been found that roughly one half of cystathionine |3-synthase deficient patients respond well to very high doses of vitamin b-6, the coenzyme for cystathionine (3-synthase, which can lower their homocysteine and serine concentrations to normal levels.30 In most people, after a stiff drink or two of alcohol, the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase oxidizes ethanol to acetaldehyde. The oxidation of this chemical is then catalyzed by a second enzyme, aldehyde dehydrogenase (NAD+). However, some people have a naturally occurring variant of aldehyde dehydrogenase coded by the Lys487 allele.

Most women were initially treated with vitamin b-6 (pyri-doxine HCL) 100 mg daily for a 3-month period. Those who did not respond were given 3 g of Evening Primrose Oil daily for 1 month followed by 2 g daily for an additional 2 months. Other participants were given the Evening Primrose oil regimen as first-line treatment; 58%,of the Vitamin B6/EPO treatment group (71 patients) reported pain relief and 59% of the EPO first-line group (99 patients) reported relief.
The author concluded that good responses can be obtained from products devoid of significant side effects, such as EPO and vitamin b-6 as a first line treatment (McFayden, et al, 1992). In an older review article, a clinician reported satisfactory treatment of mild mastalgia using three 500-mg doses of Evening Primrose oil twice daily for 1 month. Treatment that was considered successful after this time was continued 1 to 2 months longer. Patients were reported to have long-lasting effects even after the treatment period ended (Steinbrunn et al, 1997).

After this date, the patient would resume the 5-HTP and niacinamide, take 250 mg of vitamin b-6 and 400 mg of magnesium. The vitamin b-6 and magnesium were prescribed for the premenstrual symptoms of depression. On June 4, 2004,1 received an urgent telephone call from the patient. Since discontinuing the prescribed treatments on June 1, her anxiety symptoms returned promptly and she had difficulty functioning. She agreed to resume only the niacinamide tablets. On July 2, 2004 the patient e-mailed me with an update.

The thin, hyper-metabolic Vata body type, for example, may have a far greater need for vitamin b-6 than the heavier-set, hypo-metabolic Kapha type who can never really run out of it. It is also not known how much of each vitamin is contained in a banana, an apple or a piece of cauliflower. Vitamin contents fluctuate greatly with the size of the fruits, their maturity, the condition of the soil, country of origin, time of harvesting, and the use of pesticides. How many of the vitamins contained in these foods actually end up in our blood depends on our digestive ability and body type.

Subsequent studies have confirmed this finding, as he notes: "There are now 17 published studies - all positive -showing that high dosages of vitamin b-6 and magnesium are a safe and often helpful treatment for autism. Thousands of parents are using B-6 and magnesium to help their children. Almost 50% show worthwhile improvement and the vitamins are immeasurably safer than any drug.

However, in severe cases surgery might still be needed.
NATUROPATHIC MEDICAL TREATMENT AND PREVENTION Bio-identical Hormones and Clinical Nutrition Naturopathic treatment of hyperprolactinemia includes the use of nutrients (such as vitamin b-6 and magnesium) that promote dopamine synthesis, since dopamine is the main inhibitor of prolactin. If an elevated estrogen/progesterone ratio is detected, this can be treated with nutrients that promote estrogen metabolism, and/orwith bio-identical progesterone replacement. Dopamine is the key modulator of prolactin and acts as an inhibiting factor.

Pyridoxine, vitamin b-6, is involved in converting tryptophan to niacin. Because of this connection the symptoms of vitamin b-6 deficiency are similar to those of Pellagra: depression, nausea, vomiting, irritability, confusion, weight loss, convulsion, anemia, dizziness, weakness, etc. vitamin b-6 is essential for proper transmission of the nerve impulses we refer to as neurotransmitters. It is believed that this deficiency is a contributing factor in an alcoholic's experience with depression, sluggish thinking, hyperactivity or manic behavior.

Food Sources: Good food sources of vitamin b-6 include liver, potatoes, banana, lentils, brewer's yeast, trout, and spinach. Vitamin B-12 Deficiency The body needs vitamin B-12 in order for optimal metabolism of folic acid, amino acids, and fat to occur. Vitamin B-12 is also important for maintaining antioxidant protection and for the adequate functioning of the nervous system. The vitamin B-12 found in foods needs the appropriate amounts of stomach acid and other enzymes to be liberated from food proteins.
There are several good reasons for using vitamin b-6 (pyridoxine) therapeutically, both for psychiatric patients and for patients with physical disease. KP is a measure of oxidative stress, found in approximately 75% of schizophrenic patients, depending upon the duration of their sickness and their treatment. While seldom present in healthy people, KP is seen in about one third of all non-psychotic patients, no matter what their diagnosis. About half of the children with infantile autism test positive.
The vitamin b-6 treatment halted atrophy of the thenar muscle. They suggested it is a cofac-tor for normal cortisone activity in tendons and synovium. They also reported one case where riboflavin alone was very effective in treating carpal tunnel syndrome, but when both vitamin B-2 and B-6 were given together, the results were even better. They concluded that this syndrome was the result of a double vitamin deficiency.

Reference Study Information Grade 4 Small experimental study on patients with hyperventilation syndrome who were given supplemental vitamin b-6 and L-tryptophan. C 5 Small experimental trial of 12 patients taking B-complex vitamins to correct various enzymopathies. c 7 Expert opinion and some experimental data demonstrating that inositol has an anti-anxiety effect comparable to librium and meprobamate. D 8 A double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial, involving 21 patients with panic disorder (with or without agoraphobia) who were given 12 g of inositol each day for 4 weeks.
Concerns about vitamin b-6, according to this expert, are grossly overstated. To reduce any potential side effects from pyridoxine treatment, it is best taken with optimal doses of magnesium (about 3 to 4 mg per pound of body weight or 6.6 to 8.8 mg per kg of body weight) and with other B-vitamins.12>13 B-Complex A B-complex 100 can also be prescribed two to five times daily with meals, depending on the therapeutic response. Side effects are minimal, but can include nausea if taken on an empty stomach and an increased yellowing of the urine (a harmless side effect).
Prescribing L-trypophan and 5-hydroxy try tophan L-tryptophan The optimal dose of L-tryptophan appears to be 2 g daily in conjunction with vitamin b-6. To increase the availability of L-tryptophan to the brain and to augment its therapeutic effect, it is best taken on an empty stomach with some type of carbohydrate (e.g., fruit juice)7 In terms of side effects, the clinician needs to know that L-tryptophan can aggravate bronchial asthma and produce nausea when high doses are administered.
