| Getting back to pets and veterinarians, by the way, I happen to believe that most people would get far better nutritional advice by visiting veterinarians, rather than old-school doctors. Unfortunately, veterinarians cannot give medical advice to humans. But if they could, their advice would be far more useful and effective at preventing and even reversing chronic disease than the advice given out by most physicians.
And the reason, once again, is that veterinarians have to understand the true causes of disease and the relationships between nutrition and health. |
| The fact is that veterinarians know far more about nutrition than most doctorsi That's because pets generally don't have health insurance, and it's much cheaper to prevent disease in your pet through good nutrition than it is to treat it with drugs and surgery down the road.
So veterinarians both understand good nutrition and preach it to their customers. veterinarians also understand the direct correlation between the foods a pet eats and the chronic diseases they will exhibit. |

There are no laws determining how veterinarians or shelters must dispose of pets. It is up to the owner, veterinarian, or shelter. For large animals, such as cattle, horses, and pigs, there is the "Dead Animal Disposal Act," which states they must be disposed of within twenty-four to forty-eight hours, depending on the state, and either be buried, cremated, or sent to rendering. But no similar disposal act exists for companion animals. |

He said many had consulted veterinarians and conducted tests and that sterility affected both males and females. Some noted that the problem went away when they switched corn varieties. Not all were using Garst, but all were GM with similar genetic backgrounds (maturity, height, etc.).
Three farmers reported similar issues with cows. In September 2005, Rosman fed some of the 2000 corn to three cows, just after they gave birth. He said they should have started menstruation after three months and been bred. Eight months later, however, they had not started cycling and were sold. |

Deliberate contamination with anthrax may have endangered letter sorters and carriers in the early years of this century, but anthrax has always been an occupational illness. Previously known by the name wool-sorters' disease, anthrax was an endemic hazard of the textile industry for many years, until successful prevention and decontamination procedures were adopred early in the twentieth century. |

Actually, marine veterinarians indicate sharks do get cancer. Adding more cartilage to the human body doesn't block cancer. The body produces its own cartilage from vitamin C and amino acids. But desperate cancer patients were misled for a time. The use of shark cartilage has waned in recent times.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin for Arthritis
I'VE ALWAYS BEEN impressed by how far ahead of the curve veterinarians are. You go to your vet and you don't hear a whole bunch of political drug-company propaganda about the "unproven" effect of supplements. They just tell you what works. If a dog has a skin rash, for example, and the vet gives it a vitamin supplement and soon the skin rash is gone, the vet will recommend the supplement. Done deal.
Glucosamine Chondroitin Sulfate
Vets worry less about whether there are seventy-five randomized, controlled, double-blind studies on skin rashes. |

Some veterinarians, including Lynn Nelson in Santa Monica, California, stated that about 50 percent of pet owners want their pets cremated. For the owners who do not want cremation, a company picks up the dead pets once a week from the vet clinic and delivers them to a rendering plant.
The shelters I corresponded with had a little different perspective. Most were aware that the company they contracted with trucked the animals to rendering plants. Few vet clinics or shelters have their own cremation facility. |

Mike: I find, too, that for some reason, veterinarians are far more open to nutrition than human doctors. It seems like the pharmaceutical industry is really trying to take over veterinary medicine to put pets on the same drugs, and have even pet health insurance so they can pass costs around. Perhaps a nutritional approach will win out in the end. Which way do you think it is going?
Dr. Liers: Certainly, in our world some companies are making better animal foods, Natura Pet Products, for example. I do not know if you are familiar with them. They make the Innova EVO that has no grains in it. |

The way pets are being treated today by many mainstream veterinarians amounts to nothing less than the chemical abuse of dogs and cats by an industry that has, sadly, exchanged ethics for profits and no longer sees its primary mission as helping improve the quality of life of our animal friends. Personally, I'm outraged by the practice of drugging dogs, cats and other animals with synthetic chemicals to treat degenerative health conditions, and I think those who promote or follow such practices are engaged in extremely unethical, cruel behaviors that should be criminalized. |
| The holistic veterinarians understand nutrition, herbs, homeopathy and other natural modalities. They prescribe solutions and treat animals in ways that are outlawed in human medicine (because they actually work). If you care at all about the health of your pets, I strongly urge you to seek out and work with a holistic pet care practitioner who avoids prescribing pharmaceuticals. |
| So today, the majority of veterinarians in the United States now practice chemical-based medicine on pets. At the first sign of any health symptom, they slap the animal with a prescription for expensive, patented pharmaceuticals. Arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and even depression are now being treated with dangerous prescription medications. Earlier this year, the FDA gave approval for Prozac, a powerful mind-altering drug, to be prescribed to dogs, and many of the most common drugs for people are now routinely used in pets (including chemotherapy drugs for cancer treatment). |
| Knowing that massive profits could be generated through the bodies of pets, drug companies have spent two decades pursuing an aggressive campaign of rewriting vet school curricula, influencing veterinarians and brainwashing pet owners into thinking their dogs, cats and horses need drugs in order to be healthy. |

This is a rather disconcerting experience, but many herbal veterinarians feel that small doses of a tincture, which contains alcohol, actually are the most effective and easily used form of herbs for felines.
Adding herbal medicine to a treatment protocol for a horse usually is quite easy. Horses are herbivores, so their digestive tract is made to digest the cellulose and fiber present in plant material.

This disbelief has resulted in years of questioning government organizations, pet food manufacturers, Tenderers, animal-welfare organizations, and veterinarians.
The pet food industry claims to care about the health and welfare of our pets by providing complete and balanced diets. It is apparent from the ingredients used in these foods that they are nutritionally devoid of healthy and wholesome ingredients. In my opinion, the vitamin and mineral supplements, which are added to make up for what is lacking in the foods, are also inferior. |
| Marino reported the abuse to the Association of veterinarians for Animal Rights (AVAR). Paula Kislak, DVM, with AVAR, reviewed the medical reports and the progress of the specific research animals and additional research on the subject.
Dr. Kislak concluded: "Illegal cannulization is an unnecessary invasion surgical procedure that may even compromise the study's results due to potential chronic low-grade leakage, infection, irritation, and possible need for antibiotics, all of which alter intestinal microflora."15 Dr. |
| Only three veterinarians were aware that the animal carcasses could be going to rendering plants. The rest all assumed that the dead pets were cremated.
When I asked Alan Schulman, DVM, who works at a veterinary hospital in Los Angeles, about the disposal of euthanized pets, he stated, "In our hospital, the options for owners are to take the remains of their pet for burial at the LA. pet cemetery, or we utilize CalPet Crematory for individual cremations of pets with return of the ashes in an urn to the pet owners. |

After a preliminary review of adaptogenic use among veterinarians, the authors have found that the leading two adaptogens used for animals are ashwagandha and eleuthero. More research in this area is needed. There also are many other useful herbs for animals that are not considered adaptogens, including boswellia, echinacea, and garlic.
Many of the same adaptogens that are given to people can be given to animals. |

Health practitioners in Canada, Saudi Arabia, and Ireland report a similar increase in female thyroid disorders. Most veterinarians in small animal practice are seeing thyroid problems in cats and dogs increase up to 40%. Cats tend to be hyperthyroid, while dogs tend to be hypothyroid.
What has happened? Are healthcare practitioners becoming more aware of the many facets of thyroid dysfunction presentations? Has something happened in the environment that is responsible for the apparent great increase in clinical and subclinical thyroid dysfunction? |
