All the information out there about people having nutritional deficiencies on a vegetarian diet is misguided and flat-out wrong. Unless, of course, for people are living on what I call a "junk food vegetarian diet," which is soda, chips and vegetarian processed food. Of course that diet causes nutritional deficiencies. But not a health-minded vegetarian diet. Even vitamin B12 is simple to get in sufficient quantities if you put your mind to it.
As a society, we can exist quite comfortably on a plant-based diet. |

However, given that there exist such studies that have produced evidence that supports both a vegetarian diet and a non-vegetarian diet, it is my opinion that the common sense observation that it is natural to do both, is of equal validity. Whether you agree with this or not is your choice. Recommendations put forth in this book allow for both a vegetarian and a non-vegetarian diet. |

Dogs can subsist on a vegetarian diet, but cats require a meat source of protein. Cats require much more protein than dogs, and kittens require more protein than a full-grown cat.
For dogs, vegetable protein does not contain all the amino acids that are required; therefore, a correct formulation of grains and other ingredients must be made if you plan on feeding your dog a vegetarian diet.
Indigestible proteins, such as those used in some commercial per foods (hair, feathers, fecal matter), obviously cannot sustain an animal. |

A vegetarian diet is linked to weight loss. What's this? A recent scientific review compiling data from 87 observational and clinical studies on vegetarian diets noted weight loss of up to a pound a week, and it didn't appear to depend on exercise or calorie count? Sign me up!
What's behind this? Well, vegetarians typically consume more than 50 percent of energy from carbohydrate-rich plant foods known for having some nutritional synergy (fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts, and whole grain breads and cereals). |

Other cholesterol-lowering benefits of a vegetarian diet include a higher consumption of plant stanols (2 grams a day is ideal) and soluble fiber (reaching the recommended 25 grams a day is relatively easy on a vegetarian diet). You don't have to become a full-fledged vegetarian to see results, however. Try to replace meat-based dishes with vegetarian entrees a few times a week.

| Experiment with a vegetarian diet. A typical vegetarian diet includes many cholesterol-lowering foods, such as soy milk, soy burgers, oats, almonds, beans, and plenty of fruits and vegetables, all of which have been individually found to lower cholesterol levels. In one study, after 1 month, participants' LDL levels fell by 29 percent—a drop similar to that seen with some statin drugs. |

Despite the clear BP effect of a vegetarian diet, it is not realistic to expect a wide-scale adoption of such dietary pattern. In addition, a vegetarian diet does not include all dietary factors associated with lower BP. Thus, the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) multicenter trials were designed to test the impact of whole dietary patterns on BP simultaneously while controlling for multiple nutrients, weight, and dietary factors [182, 183].

As a society, we can exist quite comfortably on a plant-based diet. We can get everything we need in terms of nutrition -- including essential oils, vitamins, minerals and the like -- on a plant-based diet. We do not need meat to survive as a civilization. |

In fact, a report issued by the American Medical Association stated that a vegetarian diet could prevent 97 percent of all cases of thrombosis leading to heart attacks.
Although a balanced vegetarian diet may contain larger amounts of fats, the fats do not seem to have any detrimental effects on the circulatory system (unless, of course, they are contaminated by harmful trans fatty acids). In contrast, overeating proteins of animal origin causes thickening of the liver blood vessels, which leads to gallstone formation in the bile ducts. |

The American Cancer Society says it has found no evidence that macrobiotic diet is useful as a cure for cancer in humans and strongly urges cancer patients to avoid dietary programs as the sole treatment for cancer. | Her therapy included vaccines derived from urine, enemas, digestive enzymes, vegetarian diet, mineral supplements, and stress reduction. Livingston-Wheeler came close, but fell short of a cancer cure. Bacteria, viruses and other germs are believed to cause 10 percent of all cancer. Her remedies should have been antibiotics and proven immune boosters. Her hit-and-miss approach was ineffective. Livingston-Wheeler was acting on the hunch there may be a hidden bacterium that initiates most tumors. However, she could never accurately identify that bacterium. |

There are lots of great parents out there raising kids on a macrobiotic diet, a vegetarian diet or a zero-processed-foods diet. Many of those parents are home schoolers, by the way. Good job to all the parents who actually teach their children healthful eating habits! Keep up the goog work!
Unfortunately, those parents are rare. Most parents just buy whatever crap is being peddled on TV these days. And they feed their kids cancer-causing processed meats, hyperactivity-causing food additives and obesity-promoting refined sugars. |

They are carnivores by designation, so when you put them on a vegetarian diet, you create a lot of problems and create symptoms you're actually trying to reverse. The only time a vegetarian diet is good for a dog or cat is as an interim diet. If they are having allergic reaction, then get them on as simple a diet as possible, and then reintroduce the meats to see which one they are reacting to.
Another case along that line is allergies. Dogs and cats have a lot of meat allergies today. |

Another major benefit of the vegetarian diet is that, statistically, vegetarians are thinner and healthier. On the average, vegetarians weigh about 20 pounds less than their meat-eating counterparts. According to the U.S. Worldwatch Institute, 1.1 billion people worldwide are underweight, and another 1.1 billion are overweight. In the U.S., 23 percent of adults are obese and 60 percent are overweight. But obesity besets poor countries, too, from Brazil to China. |

Consider a vegetarian diet. A review of vegetarian-diet studies noted that weight loss did not appear to depend on exercise or calorie count and could occur at a rate of 1 pound per week. Semivegetarian or lacto-vegetarian women had a lower risk of overweight and obesity, compared with omnivorous women, according to a Swedish study.

| There is evidence that a vegetarian diet causes an increased calorie burn after meals, meaning plant-based foods are being used more efficiently as fuel for the body, as opposed to being stored as fat," notes one of the reviewers, Neal Barnard, MD, of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC. The reviewers also reported that vegetarians experienced increased insulin sensitivity, meaning their cells absorbed nutrients more easily.

You might like to consider the benefits of a vegetarian diet. However, a vegetarian lifestyle requires a great deal of thought, planning and dedication to ensure the food intake is well balanced. For instance, if you eliminate meat from your diet you must make sure you include alternative iron-rich foods or supplements. Making such a radical change to eating habits requires strong discipline. Ask yourself: 'Can I do it, how will it affect my system, and can I afford not to do it?' A consultation with your medical practitioner is advisable before coming to any decision. |

Diet
A vegetarian diet seems to promote the production of androgens, such as DHEA and testosterone. Subjects on a high carbohydrate diet also showed a slight increase in DHEA levels.87 When a group of South African men were switched from their customary vegetarian diet to a Western-style cafeteria diet, researchers noted a decrease in DHEA levels.88
Obesity
DHEA was shown to have an anti-obesity effect on developing lean and obese laboratory rodents by decreasing adipose tissue weights, hyperinsulinemia, and food intake. |

Similarly, much of what we know about the health benefits of a vegetarian diet is based on studies of Seventh-Day Adventists, who muddy the nutritional picture by abstaining from alcohol and tobacco as well as meat. These extraneous but unavoidable factors are called, aptly, confounders.
One last example: People who take supplements are healthier than the population at large, yet their health probably has nothing whatsoever to do with the supplements they take— most of which recent studies have suggested are worthless. |

While it's certainly possible to be healthy on a vegetarian diet, it takes more planning than you might imagine. And many people—perhaps not all, but many—just do better with some animal products in their diet. It's been that way since the beginning of the human genus, and until our digestive "fuel tanks" undergo significant genetic alteration, I suspect it will remain that way. worth knowing

If that's the case,a vegetarian diet may not be suited to you. Sometimes vegetarians eat far too many carbs in the form of bread, pasta, fruit juices, and sweets—and not enough vegetables.
You could consider glucagon the body's energy hormone, in contrast to insulin, which is the fat-storage hormone. Glucagon stimulates the release of stored sugar, called glycogen, and its conversion into glucose. (Most people have about sixty to ninety minutes' worth of liver glycogen, which can be used up in strenuous exercise.)
Glucagon also promotes the breakdown of both fat and protein for energy. |

Smoking
Probably the single most important cofactor in the development of cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer is smoking. Smokers have a two- to threefold increase in the incidence of cervical dysplasia.81 Some studies indicate that the incidence compared to nonsmokers is even greater than that. Nicotine is actually concentrated in the glands of the cervix, where it then acts as a carcinogenic compound. |
