Examples: Nearly all fried foods are cooked in a blend of unhealthy oils, including trans fats. Heating increases the amount of trans fat, sometimes up to 40 percent of the oil. French fries and chicken nuggets are saturated with these awful fats. So are almost all of the bakery products made in supermarkets, nondairy creamers, nondairy whipped creams, and many other products. Assume that all cooked foods in fast-food and other chain restaurants use large amounts of these unhealthy oils. Any packaged food that lists "partially hydrogenated" vegetable oils also contains trans fats.

They often contain unhealthy oils and sugars. You can make great-tasting dressings at home, at a fraction of the cost. We'll explain how in chapter 8. Dairy department. Although dairy foods generally do not prompt a sharp increase in blood sugar, they do trigger a strong insulin response. Small amounts of European and other hard cheeses, as well as low-fat sugar-free yogurt, should be fine for most people. Western European farmers generally do not inject cows with bovine growth hormone.
Chinese and Mexican foods are popular, but many are cooked with unhealthy oils and contain substantial amounts of carbohydrates. The safest hot food is a rotisserie chicken, which you can eat at home with vegetables. Debone the leftover chicken and use it in a salad the next day. Center aisles. The inner aisles are home to prepackaged foods in boxes, bottles, jars, cans, and bags—highly processed foods with a long shelf life. With a few exceptions, this area of the store contains foods you'll want to avoid because of their high content of sugars, refined carbs, and unhealthy fats.
Healthy Chicken Schnitzel (Serves 2-4) Chicken schnitzel (in German restaurants) and chicken-fried steaks (in American restaurants) are usually covered with a thick coat of flour and pan-fried in unhealthy oils. Our version uses a light coat of Lotus Foods' Bhutanese Red Rice flour, which quickly browns and has a mouthwatering flavor. For a meal that looks far more exotic, you can use Lotus Foods' Forbidden Rice Flour, which is purple. Both products are available at many natural food stores and at www.lotusfoods.com.

It seems that the best dietary strategy for a healthy heart is one that avoids refined carbohydrates and includes healthy oils. unhealthy oils like hydrogenated oils, on the other hand, can actually harm the heart, and I will be discussing these in more detail later in this guide.
Taco sauces are easy on the calorie count, and they don't contain unhealthy oils, either. To top it off, since they are made with tomatoes and other vegetables, they do offer some elements of nutrition and fiber, although fresh vegetables are no doubt far better for you than cooked, pasteurized vegetable sauces. As always, I recommend looking into organic taco sauces, since they are made from ingredients that have not been exposed to pesticides and herbicides. These sauces likely contain higher nutrient density as well.
Fried foods: (trans fats + unhealthy oils + MSG) It's seductively easy to consume too many fried foods. Fried foods, after all, are typically rather low in carbohydrates and taste delicious. But from a health perspective, fried foods have absolutely no place in the diet of any healthy human being. This is true for several reasons: If you purchase frozen foods that are meant to be fried at home, you will find that virtually all of them contain hydrogenated oils. This is done in order to make the batter actually stick to the food so that it doesn't slough off during the frying process.

It is best to avoid unhealthy oils (such as partially hydrogenated vegetable oils), various forms of sugar (such as sucrose, glucose, fructose, high-fructose corn syrup, and dextrose), wheat gluten, artificial colorings, stabilizers, and chemicals added to make the manufacturing process easier. The term "organic" may also be misused. Several years ago a leading cereal maker marketed a 100 percent organic cereal. The problem was that most of the ingredients were refined grains and sugars, so despite being organic, the cereal was not any better nutritionally than a nonorganic product.
Nearly all the food served is manufactured before being delivered to the restaurants, and many contain various sugars, refined carbohydrates, and unhealthy oils. Again, it may be best to bypass these establishments. You will have better luck at many ethnic restaurants, particularly Greek, Middle Eastern, Japanese, and some Italian places. Seafood and upscale new American cuisine restaurants usually offer healthy meals as well. But you must be a responsible consumer and ask questions before ordering.

The frequent consumption of these unhealthy oils or processed fats will inevitably lead to sticky blood and, in many cases, blood clots. If you want free-flowing blood and healthy blood cells, turn to a plant-based diet. Consume healthy quantities of plant-based fats and oils, including raw nuts and seeds as well as avocados and even unprocessed, unrefined coconut oil. Coconut oil, in my view, is a healthy oil and does not have the same action in the body as saturated animal fats.
I also have no doubt that the consumption of sugar or refined carbohydrates interferes to some extent simply because of the nutritional deficiencies they cause; but I think the bigger offenders here are red meat, fried foods, and unhealthy oils like hydrogenated oils.

As far as salad dressings go, all commercial brands contain unhealthy oils, including Paul Newman's Olive Oil Dressing, which, in my opinion, is the best of the commercial salad dressings. If you read labels, you will quickly discover that they all contain canola, corn, safflower, or some other vegetable oil. Many people have asked me about canola oil, since it is marketed as being very safe and healthy. Few people realize that canola oil is produced from very toxic rapeseed oil.

Whelan attacks a Nebraska businessman's crusade against fatty tropical oils—the unhealthy oils in movie popcorn?while she is in the pay of palm oil special interests. "There has never been a case of ill health linked to the regulated, approved use of pesticides in this country," she claims, while taking money from a host of pesticide makers. And Whelan speaks harshly of mainstream environmentalists, such as the Natural Resources Defense Council.
