REPPED: Mike: You mention that trace minerals are part of the food you provide to the spirulina cultures. Are these the same trace minerals that are found in ocean water, then, and how much are absorbed by the spirulina?
Gerry: Well, we actually use something very unique which I don't think is duplicated anywhere in the world and that is at each batch of spirulina we produce, we add a measured amount of this deep sea water that is very rich in trace minerals. It actually provides all 96 trace minerals known, and it is absorbed very well. |

This peculiarity makes it much easier to trace back the history of a population through the female (in the case of mitochondrial DNA) or male (Y chromosome) to its founding ancestors. Using DNA, we've traced every human being on Earth back to founding female lineages."
Francalacci had used this technique on Sardinians to trace their origins back roughly 14,000 years, he said. At that time, the world was warming after an ice age. As the snows retreated, a small band of genetically related people in Iberia began a journey out of the Pyrenees Mountains to the Mediterranean Sea. |

| Mike: So, what we typically call an organic form of trace minerals, I think it's important for people to understand the difference, because if someone is just drinking trace minerals from seawater, that's a very different molecular form than what's found in the spirulina, correct?
Gerry: That's correct. It's usually associated or chelated with some other compounds that make it much more bioavailable to the body. |

The upstream water had trace amounts of some prescription drugs, but at far lower concentrations.
Most remarkable, the team found that about 70 percent of the downstream water samples were tainted with traces of Tegretol, a drug for epilepsy that doctors had started to prescribe for everything from pain to mood disorders.
"That just floored me," Dr. Kolpin told me, referring to the Tegretol data. "I thought there can't be that many epileptics in Iowa. It seems to be a persistent compound. It's really resilient. We don't know what that means."

The naturopathic physician would trace the water back to the stain in the ceiling, and this stain would indicate that water has been chronically dripping in from a leaky roof. Then, he would trace it through the attic to the roof and find a hole in the roof. After a bit of detective work, he (or she) would decide to patch the hole, repair the roof and stop the leaking water at its source.
Treat the problem, not the symptom
Naturopaths aren't treating the water -- the symptom -- and this confuses conventional medicine to a great degree. |

If industry has deprived us of knowledge, the distribution system has accentuated this expropriation, to the point where it has made the provenance of products impossible to trace. The word traceability, which is a must for every self-respecting food production chain nowadays, hardly existed ten years ago. Before mad cow disease and the dioxin-contaminated chicken, it was not possible to trace the place of production of the raw material for industrial products. |

While a container of a highly toxic substance, such as lead or arsenic, will likely bear the skull and crossbones symbol, another substance, such as drinking water, which may contain trace amounts of these toxins, will not be so marked. Likewise, even though the can of insect spray beneath your counter will include a warning on the label, the strawberries you purchased from your local supermarket will not, despite the fact that they may contain trace amounts of the same (or related) toxic compounds (a result of pesticide application to commercially grown crops). |

I also want to mention that this salt is a full-spectrum salt, so instead of just getting sodium and chloride, you're getting a full spectrum of trace minerals and macro minerals, as well. Remember that table salt you might be consuming, or the sodium found in processed foods, is just sodium chloride. You don't get the trace minerals, and it is those trace minerals – those other 90 elements, for example – that you need in order to be a healthy, vibrant human being, and with this kind of salt product, you can get this into your diet very easily, very quickly, and I also think quite affordably. |

Coenzyme QlO (CoQlO), or ubiquinone, is a fat-soluble vitamin or vitaminlike substance that is also a potent antioxidant. trace amounts of CoQlO exist in a variety of foods, such as organ meats, beef, soy oil, sardines, mackerel, and peanuts. The body also has the ability to make CoQlO from the amino acid tyrosine, but this is a complicated process that requires at least eight vitamins and several trace minerals to complete. A deficiency in any one of these nutrients can hinder the body's natural production of CoQlO. |

Chromium Chromium is a trace element that helps insulin in the regulation of blood sugar. Chromium deficiencies may result in cloudy eye corneas and sugar in the urine. Chromium can be found in dairy products, seafood, whole grain products, beef, chicken, and fresh fruits.
Cobalt Cobalt is also a trace mineral that promotes normal red blood cell formulation. This mineral is necessary for the production of vitamin B-l 2. Cobalt deficiencies may result in anemia, weight loss, fatigue, and weakness. Natural sources of cobalt are in liver, milk, spinach, kidney, eggs, and warercress. |

Still, the data he painstakingly gathered from his control groups, and the lines of connection he was able to trace, not only between diet and health but also between the way a people produces food and that food's nutritional quality, remain valuable today. Indeed, his research is even more valuable today than in 1939, because most of the groups he studied have long since vanished or adopted more Western ways of eating. If you want to study the Western diet today, control groups are few and far between. (You can of course create them, as Kerin O'Dea did in Australia. |

Indeed, "the bottom line is that the Snapple drinks are basically sugar water. |

So-called sugar-free foods can legally contain trace amounts of sugar—less than .5 grams per serving, according to the FDA, which sets labeling guidelines. Selenium, a trace mineral needed by our bodies, acts like an antioxidant when incorporated into proteins, so it reduces damage that can lead to cancer. It comes largely from garlic and other foods that absorb selenium from the soil. Many fish and Brazil nuts also have selenium. It seems that taking 200 micrograms of selenium in organic supplements may help reduce your cancer risk if you live in a selenium-poor area of the country (most areas are depleted of selenium). Don't exceed 600 micrograms a day.
