People with extensive tooth loss almost always have low vitamin D levels and low bone mass. Calcium and vitamin D supplementation, however, can reduce their rate of tooth loss. Early tooth loss and tooth/gum pain also are symptoms of inadequate bone production, accelerated bone turnover, and/or bone loss.
Many studies have revealed a link between gum disease, cavities, and/or tooth loss and the incidence of cardiovascular disease and multiple sclerosis. Gum disease is associated with the development of cardiovascular disease, even after accounting for other variables. |

His mother explained that her son had gone to the dentist at his commander's request to have the tooth pulled before leaving for the Middle East. But Colby had suffered what is called a dry socket, in which the hole left when a tooth comes out does not heal. The excruciating pain can last for weeks.
Colby had started taking one of the painkillers before his tooth was pulled. Five days after a dentist pulled the tooth, the soldier went to the emergency room, where a doctor prescribed a second drug. Two days later another dentist gave him the third prescription. |

| Tooth enamel is the strongest material in the body, and yet the bacteria inside plaque are able to eat through the enamel and attack the dentine inside, then the pulp that feeds the tooth, and finally the root canal, causing a toothache and eventually destroying the tooth. Meanwhile, the excess sugar inside the stomach depletes the body's calcium supply, further weakening the tooth's ability to protect itself. |

With higher levels of fluoride, pitting of the tooth enamel can occur. The Centers for Disease Control estimate that 23 percent of people in the United States aged 6 to 39 years of age have some degree of dental fluorosis. This may be due to the combined fluoride intake from fluoridated water, fluoridated toothpaste, and topical dental fluoride treatments.
Summary for Fluoride
Main functions: strengthens tooth enamel. Adequate Intakes: adult men, 3.8 mg; adult women, 3.1 mg. Toxicity: very toxic.
Tolerable upper intake level is 10 mg for adults. Deficiency may increase risk of dental decay. |

Hale writes, "It is true that dogs that routinely chew on bones will tend to have clean tooth crowns; however, they're also very prone to having fractured teeth. These fractures typically expose the pulp tissue inside the tooth and allow infection to travel through the root-canal system and into the jawbone."4
Dr. Hale also notes that this is not only a painful condition but it also constitutes an open pathway for infection to enter the body. Only dental X-rays can detect this condition since there is usually no bleeding gum tissue or foul odor that would alert the owner. |

In children and younger teens, topical fluoride treatments seem to reduce tooth decay.
INTAKE OF FLUORIDE
The major source of fluoride in the United States is fluoridated water. About two-thirds of the population of the United States drinks fluoridated water. The fluoride content of food is extremely low. Only tea and sardines have been found to contain even small amounts of fluoride. The swallowing of fluoride-containing toothpaste is a major source of fluoride intake, especially in children.
TOXICITY OF FLUORIDE
There is some controversy about the toxicity of fluoride. |

| Wisdom tooth extraction. This one is the granddaddy of all unnecessary surgeries—approximately half of all wisdom tooth extractions are unnecessary. For decades, major dental organizations and journals have criticized the removal of wisdom teeth that are symptom-free. To protect yourself, any time a dentist recommends having your wisdom teeth removed, get a second opinion from another dentist. If wisdom teeth are impacted, infected or are causing other teeth to shift, surgery may be necessary. |

Dandelion's name derives from the French dent de lion, meaning tooth of the lion. It is said that this may be because the toothed leaves resemble that of a lion's teeth. I wonder if this name was given more because of Dandelion's ferocious nature in dealing with indigestion, elimination of waste through the liver and urinary tract, and its tremendous preventive abilities due to high nutritive value. Dandelion has a go-getter personality like one who is not afraid to work hard to do what needs to be done and is not going to give up easily. |

"From this I was saved by an old farmer who told me to use this amazing liquid—to hold my head for five minutes under a pipe of running water, declaring that if I did so, the pain would disappear. I followed his advice and succeeded in keeping my tooth. The pain vanished. |

Magnesium deficiency factor in osteoporosis and tooth decay
Western medical authorities claim that the widespread incidence of osteoporosis and tooth decay in western countries can be prevented with a high calcium intake. Yet, it is evident that this approach will only exacerbate an already alarming trend. Asian and African populations with a low daily intake of calcium (about 300 mg), experience very little osteoporosis. Bantu women with an intake of 200 to 300 mg of calcium daily have the lowest incidence of osteoporosis in the world. |
