Extreme sound sensitivity is sometimes a harbinger of tinnitus. (See Ringing in Your Ears, above.) Ironically, people with impaired hearing sometimes become supersensitive to certain sounds. Noise sensitivity can be a reaction to the artificial sweetener aspartame as well as some antibiotics, analgesics, and allergy medicines. It can also signal magnesium deficiency. And finding normal noises annoying SIGN OF THE TIMES Beethoven not only started losing his hearing when he was 27 (apparently from otosclerosis) but also suffered from hypersensitivity to noise and tinnitus.

Often people with this condition will have other signs besides hearing loss, such as light-headedness, lack of coordination, tinnitus, or a feeling of fullness in the ear. Sudden hearing loss may also point to such serious systemic disorders as multiple sclerosis, sickle cell anemia, bacterial or viral infection, lupus erythematosus, and cancer. WARNING SIGN Here are two more reasons to quit smoking: smokers are 70% more likely to suffer hearing loss than nonsmokers, and living with a smoker doubles your risk of hearing loss.
Rarely, tinnitus is a danger sign of a brain tumor or a brain aneurysm—a weakening in a blood vessel wall that can lead to a stroke. 0 WARNING SIGNS If you have recurrent bouts of the signs below, you may have Meniere's disease. ¦ Hearing loss ¦ Dizziness or vertigo ¦ Ringing in the ears ¦ Feeling pressure or fullness in the ear HEARING YOUR HEARTBEAT If you occasionally hear what sounds like your heart beating, you may be right. Most people think that problems such as tooth decay, tonsil infections, earaches, vertigo, tinnitus, sore throat, stiffness of the neck and shoulders, hair loss, a hoarse voice, broken speech, headaches, nasal and sinus congestion and so on, are accidental occurrences that don't need to be taken very seriously. Yet, these "minor" complaints may indicate major imbalances in the digestive system. They can be the harbingers of eventually life-threatening circulatory problems, heart attacks, strokes and even brain tumors.

Authors point to variability of dosing regimens, types of Ginkgo products, and outcome measures as reason for caution for a full recommendation, but consider that Ginkgo has potential for use in the treatment of tinnitus (Ernst & Stevinson, 1999).- Vertigo: In a 3-month trial, Ginkgo extract (Egb 761, Rokan®) was significantly more effective than placebo in relieving the intensity, frequency, and duration of vertigo episodes (Hague-nauer et al, 1986). Vitiligo Active progression of depigmentation was halted in subjects with vitiligo treated with Ginkgo biloba for 6 months.
Similarly, Ginkgo was found to be no more effective than placebo in the treatment of tinnitus in an earlier, 12-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Subjects (n=1121) were randomized to receive Ginkgo biloba extract LI 1370, 50 mg, 3 times daily or placebo. Of 1,121 subjects, a total of 956 subjects were paired. No significant differences were found between the groups at weeks 4, 12, and 14 as determined by a 21-symptom questionnaire. Audiological measurements were not taken. Adverse effects were similar between groups (Drew & Davies, 2001).

Vitamin B12 deficiency is also associated with deafness; supplements have been useful in treating tinnitus and noise-related hearing loss. To get enough B12 you have to do more than eat it—you have to absorb it. And therein lies the rub. Anyone over 40, especially the elderly, are at risk of B12 deficiency because they lack enough of a protein that is secreted in the stomach called intrinsic factor, which you need to absorb B12. So even if you're getting plenty of the vitamin in your diet—which, believe me, most people aren't—it won't do you much good if you lack this important protein.

Meniere's can also cause fluctuating hearing loss and a sensation of ringing in the ears (see tinnitus, p. 312). The hearing loss can remain even after the attack has subsided, or can come and go. The exact cause of the condition is not known, although stress is thought to be one of the main triggers. Unfortunately, there tends to be a pattern of repetition, either regular or irregular, to the attacks. However, in time they do become less frequent and less severe, and can disappear entirely for years. There is no cure for Meniere's disease.
