DNA repair theory, oxidative stress theory, immune theory, membrane theory, waste accumulation theory, calorie restriction theory, etc.), free radicals lie at the heart of most damage theories of aging.
First identified more than forty years ago by Gerschman, and championed as the key to aging ever since by biochemist Denham Harman of the University of Nebraska, free radicals are molecules with unpaired electrons in their outer shell. Such molecules can wreak havoc on normal cells by attempting to steal an electron from another molecule in order to restore their balance. |

Theory of Simplicity
During my research I discovered an interesting theory that I want to share with you. Perhaps you have already heard it used in another context. It is called Ockham's Razor. William of Ockham was a 14th-century English philosopher and Franciscan monk who played a major role in the transition from medieval to modern thought. His theory states that when evaluating things which make a similar prediction, the simplest solution is correct. It is interesting that in our contemporary society the opposite of Ockham's razor is true when it is applied to health and fitness. |

Modern science has developed new tools to test the theory of energy starvation in failing hearts. Techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), spectroscopy, positron emission tomography (PET), and genetic modification (transgenesis) in mouse models of heart disease have allowed this theory to be confirmed. We now know for certain that ATP levels decrease in the hypertro-phied and failing hearts by up to 30 percent. However, because the loss of ATP substrates is progressive, it is generally not easy to detect until the heart is in severe failure. |

The vascular theory holds that migraines strike when blood vessels in the brain contract and expand inappropriately, interfering with the flow of blood. The serotonin theory argues that the root problem lies in changes in the amount of the brain's "feel-good" neurotransmitter, serotonin, which causes the inappropriate contraction and expansion of the blood vessels. Then there's the neural theory, which suggests that irritation of certain nerves or a part of the brain stem causes the release of various chemicals that trigger inflammation in the brain. |

But, how do we separate theory from proof, fact from fiction? That is the important question. What difference do these various waters make to the energy and growth of living organisms? If they make little or no difference to vitality, they are merely theory and perhaps good marketing promotion. What really should get our attention is results!
Energy Comparisons of Different Waters
Listed below are some average energy comparisons for different kinds of water from the research done by Mr. and Mrs. Excelex. |

Lenny Jason, one of the country's leading CFS researchers, calls the envelope theory. The theory goes like this. Anyone—healthy or sick—has just so much energy available for use in any single day. The hardest thing someone with a new onset of severe fatigue has to do is to learn how to budget the energy he or she does have. This is where the envelope comes in.
View the envelope as holding all of the energy you have available in the course of a day. The best way to figure out how much energy you are expending each day is to count your steps with a device called a pedometer. |

The bigger picture: Dead foods lead to dead people
I have heard a theory that says the governments of the world, concerned with the population carrying capacity of planet Earth, have unleashed a plan to greatly reduce the population by destroying the nutritional value of foods and supplements. Once malnutrition becomes rampant, the theory goes, the population will collapse through disease and infertility, and the remaining few will find themselves in a happy, low-population world where they can actually afford to buy a condo. |

Marsh undertook these experiments in 1985, the prion theory was just that—a theory. Scientists had first identified prions in the 1970s, however, it was not until about 1987 that prions were connected to BSE or any of the TSE diseases. The British government, as well as all Tenderers internationally, assumed that rendering destroys this disease.

Another theory is that we humans are one of the few creatures on earth unable to make our own vitamin C; we must obtain it from our diet, and it's found most abundantly in sweet things like fruits. Nature, so the theory goes, gave us a sweet tooth so we would actually desire food without which we wouldn't survive.
No matter. We humans love sweet things, probably way too much for our own good. In Paleolithic times, a sweet tooth wasn't much of a problem. (There were no twenty-four-hour supermarkets in the caveman era. |

First, the usual "wear and tear" theory of aging is (pardon the expression) dead wrong. Until recently, researchers were convinced that as body parts and cells wear out and simultaneously built-in repair systems become less effective, humans and most other animals slowly but inevitably age. Cancer cells, which have been lurking like looters in the background, are now free to run amok. Like your car's brake pads, your joints wear down. Crud builds up in your arteries, and eventually the major arteries to your heart or brain shut down. A tidy theory, but it's incorrect. |
| Let me assure you, this is not a theory. Scientists have known about the behavior (if not the actual existence) of these genes for years. Killer genes clearly deserve their label for the chillingly-yet miraculously—methodical and predictable way they activate to carry out their instructions. I suspect that soon you, too, will be awed by their power.
Recent discoveries have upended the mechanisms of aging and death that most of us have been taught as immutable. First, the usual "wear and tear" theory of aging is (pardon the expression) dead wrong. |

A fundamental problem with the oasis theory is that the wild ancestors of our modern grains came to the Middle East from northern Africa at the end of the last glaciation. This means that the variety of food resources available to people in the Middle East was expanding at the time that agriculture arose—the opposite of the oasis theory. So the story cannot be as simple as the idea that people, plants, and animals crowded into shrinking oases as the counttyside dried. And because only certain people in the Middle East adopted agriculture, the cultural adaptation hypothesis falls short. |

Many researchers believe fiber may help in fighting breast cancer. This theory is based upon the role of estrogen, and the evidence that shows how prolonged exposure to increased estrogen (and even progesterone) can increase cancer risk. In breast cancer, tumor growth is stimulated by estrogen. Fiber actually binds with estrogen and escorts it out of the body through normal bowel elimination. Hence, the theory goes that fiber can slow down the growth of breast tumors because it binds to estrogen and lowers the body's levels of this hormone, which can worsen tumor growth. |

As predicted by our theory, increasing the concentration of magnesium and reducing the background level of noise led to the largest increases of plasticity ever reported in scientific literature," Liu said.
The researchers have identified and are now studying several families of drugs that may restore learning and memory in animals. Most important, Liu said, "This new theory may help create strategies to prevent aging-induced loss of synaptic plasticity."

The same effect has not been duplicated in humans, however.) The theory is that omega-3s increase the permeability of the cell's membranes and its rate of metabolism. (Hummingbirds have tons of omega-3s in their cell membranes; big mammals much less.) A cell with a rapid metabolism and permeable membrane should respond particularly well to insulin, absorbing more glucose from the blood to meet its higher energy requirements. That same mechanism suggests that diets high in omega-3 s might protect against obesity as well. |

A tidy theory, but it's incorrect. Aging and death are not preordained, but like everything else, they are essential components of our genetic programming that is still evolving.
Here's the shocker: Creatures such as sharks and alligators that date back hundreds of millions of years have no aging mechanism and appear to have no finite age limit. Another example: Cell lines of cancer tumors have survived unchanged in petri dishes for more than sixty years, long after their human hosts have died. |

The theory that chelation therapy works to diminish the calcium in your plaque has never been proven, but there's anecdotal evidence that it can help clear arteries in some people. It's very enticing but still experimental. An even better Drano promises to be a new drug that is a super HDL called alpha-1 -Milano. | The risk was increased similarly whether the drink was sugared or diet. One theory is that the high sweetness of drinks conditions people to crave sweet foods; another is that ingredients in the drinks can lead to insulin resistance or inflammation. the result of a fundamental mismatch between our ancestral insides and our modern world outside.
Why is that such a problem? Because the excess sugar we consume today coalesces into a syrupy mixture that coats our organs and creates glasslike shards that can cut up the blood vessels and tissues of our body. |

No, the challenge we face today is figuring out how to escape the worst elements of the Western diet and lifestyle without going back to the bush.
In theory, nothing could be simpler: To escape the Western diet and the ideology of nutritionism, we have only to stop eating and thinking that way. But this is harder to do in practice, given the treacherous food environment we now inhabit and the loss of cultural tools to guide us through it. Take the question of whole versus processed foods, presumably one of the simpler distinctions between modern industrial foods and older kinds. |
