Exotic systems / emerging systems: Many "undiscovered" systems of natural medicine are slowly making their way to Western societies. "Tibetan medicine" is beginning to gain momentum, partially thanks to the outstanding work of the Dalai Lama and the accelerating movement of Tibetan Buddhism in Western culture. Australian aborigines have their own system of medicine, as do various native populations in the South Pacific, Africa, and throughout many areas of South America including Peru, Brazil and Argentina. |
| REPPED: What's the deal with all the different systems of medicine? And what's the difference between "Western medicine" and "conventional medicine?" Here, you'll find some honest answers.
"Conventional medicine" refers to the classic medical training offered through mainstream medical schools. This is a drugs-and-surgery approach to medicine that largely excludes nutrition, wellness, mind-body medicine, patient education, and other natural therapies.
"Organized medicine" refers to the collection of organizations that promote conventional medicine. |

These indicators are not fail-safe alarm systems: we have a tendency to overreact, to be sure, but at their fundaments, these signaling systems are good and useful things. They are messages that we need to hear. They give us vital feedback on our progress, or lack of it, through our interior and exterior environment or, as Seligman put it, negative emotions contain "messages about how our commerce with the world is going."6
Other cultures know that emotional pain is a good thing. In Japanese culture, for instance, sadness is appropriate and valued. |

There are studies that show that people who run marathons tend to have much better cardiovascular systems than people who don't. You could say that that says more is better, but those exercises generally take a toll on your joints. So marathoners have good cardiovascular systems, but they will probably have to have their joints replaced. But in general, if somebody could do a minimum of 30 minutes—maybe we could raise it to 60—of exercise at least five times a week that would help. And it doesn't appear to have to be all at one time, although that seems to be better. |

Their bodies are not designed to handle a corn-rich diet; as a result, these animals can form liver abscesses and excessively acidic digestive systems.
Plastics -- For the many animals whose digestive systems still need roughage to move food through, these factories have turned to the use of plastic pellets instead of plant-based roughage to compensate for a lack of natural fiber in the feed.
Meat from members of the same species -- The factory farming industry is turning farm animals into cannibals. |

Don't you know that the 1918 bird flu actually killed people who had stronger immune systems?" That was true, so he said, "The advice you've got to be giving people is not to strengthen their immune systems. They have to weaken their immune systems to survive bird flu." So I replied back, "So what's the bird flu protection diet? Donuts? Pizza? Coca-cola? What should we be telling people?"
Wolfe: What did he say?
Mike: I haven't heard an answer on that one yet, but what do you think about that?
Wolfe: Well, I think that what we're seeing there is simple. |

In Hindu and Buddhisr systems of medicine, chakra refers to an energy center in the body. In both systems, major chakras are aligned in an ascending column from the base of the spine to the top of the head with numerous lesser energy centers located in other parrs of the body and extremities. Each chakra is associated with specific physiological, mental, or spiritual functions. The Hindu scheme has seven major chakras. The first chakra is located at the base of the spine and is responsible for storing basic biological energy. |

Mike: I saw the list of all of the dietary systems that you cover. It's quite a list, of maybe 40 different systems or so?
Joshua: We cover close to 100 dietary theories in the school. (Click here to see what else is offered at the Institute.)
Mike: I even saw five element systems from Chinese medicine. I'm very happy to see that as part of the coverage as well. It reminds me of some of the books of either Paul Pitchford, or Dr. Elson Haas, I think he has one called "Eating Healthy with the Seasons." Are you familiar with that book?
Joshua: Yes. |

Daughton writes in the Renewable Resources Journal, "New drug entities, many with mechanisms of action never before encountered by biological systems, can be expected to enjoy continued introduction to commerce. All will have the potential to enter the environment merely as a result of their daily use (e.g., introduction to surface and ground waters via excretion, bathing, or disposal to sewage systems)."
In an interview with National Public Radio earlier this month, Daughton said the types of PPCPS found most in the nation's water supply fall into two categories. |

The knowledge that plants concentrate most of their anti-animal defensive systems in their leaves and seeds is going to have profound implications for us as you move through Diet Evolution; indeed, it is the key to Phase 3. At this point, just remember that the longer humans have been exposed to a plant-based food, the longer our genetic code has had to come up with a defense strategy. Detoxification enzymes, which neutralize or eliminate toxins, are located mainly in the liver and are usually on standby in the event of an emergency. |

When I joined the Cleveland Clinic's staff in 1969, locker room space in the senior surgical staff dressing room was at a premium. Locker assignments were alphabetical, and as my last name begins with an E, I was assigned to double up with a doctor whose name began with F. For two years, Rene Favaloro and I shared the same surgical locker.
Dr. Favaloro, a native of Argentina, was a brilliant, creative, and compassionate surgeon. |

For grazing animals, the odds are that they are not going to eat enough of any single semi-toxic food to chronically overwhelm their enzyme systems. If one plant doesn't agree with them, most animals naturally just move on to another kind.
Raw vegetables are loaded with these "toxins." Am I saying you shouldn't eat plenty of raw vegetables? No way. But you do need to evolve your eating pattern to allow your liver enzymes to handle the additional load of plant toxins. |

The word radical better describes the typical American diet, which guarantees that millions will perish from withering vascular systems. And in my experience, patients who realize that they have a clear choice—between invasive surgery that will do nothing to cure their underlying disease and nutritional changes that will arrest and reverse the disease and improve the quality of their lives—willingly adopt the dietary changes.

When my colleagues at Loma Linda studied the marathoners, they found that their immune systems were shot. In contrast, look at sprinters in the 100- or 200-yard dash. They're muscle bound—exactly the opposite of long-distance runners. If you run sprints fast, you'll gain muscle mass.

Our ancestors were clearly into another form of exercise: both men and women collected food, whether prey, leaves, berries, or tubers, and carried it back to a central camp. Today, we call it strength training, but in the old, old days without such activity you and your tribe didn't eat. |

| Yogurt is easily digested by pets and will replace the good bacteria in their systems if they are on antibiotics. Cottage cheese contains 155 mg. per cup. One cup of low-fat milk provides 300 mg. Calcium can also be obtained from other natural sources: 3 ounces of canned salmon with the bone contains 180 mg. of calcium and 3 1/2 ounces of sardines with bones, 400 mg. Two tablespoons of whole sesame seeds contain 175 mg. of calcium. Many vegetables contain calcium although in lower levels than the foods mentioned above.

Flavonoid phytochemicals are thought to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, possibly by reducing blood pressure and strengthening the antioxidant defense systems that protect the heart. Flavonoids also help maintain healthy capillaries, the extremely narrow blood vessels that connect small arteries throughout the body with small veins, by reducing the activity of certain enzymes that naturally break down the supporting structures of blood vessels.

This simple solution increases the benefit we get from food and the efficiency of our digestive systems. As you will soon see, this in turn will benefit our health in major ways, adding to our quality of life and well-being.
METABOLIC ENZYMES
Enzymes that are active and functional in the cells, tissues, or bloodstream are called metabolic enzymes. Though you might have heard about the importance of digestive enzymes, very few people know about or can accurately describe the role of metabolic enzymes. Metabolic enzymes are any enzymes produced within the body that are not used for digestion. |
| That energy demand robs all other systems of the body of the vital energy they need to keep up.
Thus it should not surprise us to learn that when we eat cooked and processed foods, especially when we overeat, our immune system actually becomes less active. The protease production so essential to immune support decreases since the energy required to manufacture these enzymes has been dedicated to producing digestive enzymes. We pay the price initially by being tired, but over time by suffering from poor health. |
| Instead they are absorbed into the blood and can benefit different systems of the body, such as the cardiovascular system by increasing circulation, the immune system by providing it with essential enzymes to manufacture healthy white blood cells, and the endocrine system by taking stress off of the glands.
Though enzyme supplements may not function directly as metabolic enzymes, they have been shown to improve metabolic function. The therapeutic or systemic use of enzymes is designed specifically to support a deficiency in metabolic enzymes, not replace them. |
