Their name "says a lot about us, and our clothes, and how we want you to feel when you put them on; comfortable, soothed, warm and wonderful—clean. |

And then you will achieve a lasting program built on my simple equation: doability + taste = sustainability.
If you really want to "put the pedal to the metal" and maximize the health benefits of the 101 foods, you need to embrace the power of synergy. As you have discovered from my story, eating a bowl of oats every day can be an effective method for lowering cholesterol. But adding nuts like almonds, walnuts, and pistachios, along with some cranberries and cherries, all submerged in some soy milk, takes that bowl to a whole new level. |

Others see the heart of sustainability as people: 'If there are no villages left, you can forget about sustainability' For others, the door is history and culture: 'If you don't respect your cultural and historical roots, forget it.' To some, like people I work with in Eastern Europe, the door is democracy: 'First of all, we have to be able to participate. If people try to tell us what to do, forget about sustainability.'
"I try to let people unravel rhe mystery for themselves. What is quality of life to them? Otherwise, they can't go forward. |

These sorts of restrictive approaches may result in feelings of hunger or dissatisfaction, which can limit their acceptability, sustainability, and long-term effectiveness [55-57]. Conversely, consuming a diet low in energy density allows energy intake to be reduced without strictly limiting food portions. Figure 4 depicts the total amount of food that can be consumed for 1400 kcal at three different energy density levels. The energy density values in the figure correspond to a low- (1.4kcal/g), medium-(1.9kcal/g), and high-energy-density (2. |

Everywhere you looked, ominous signs belied the upbeat reports and sustainability of the post-2001 recovery. The personal savings rate had fallen below zero to its lowest levels since the 1930s, indicating that Americans were not socking away anything for a rainy day. Even if they wanted to save, the data suggested it would have been a challenge. Between 2001 and 2004, inflation-adjusted average family income fell by 2 percent, lagging far behind the prior 3-year period's 17 percent increase, according to the Federal Reserve's triennial "Survey of Consumer Finances. |

The EU and its member states are now the world's single largest supplier of foreign aid, introducing elements of environmental sustainability to economic-development strategies that were once the global purview of the United States. Despite U.S. opposition, international initiatives—among them Kyoto, the Land Mine Treaty, the International Criminal Court, the Basel Convention on Hazardous Wastes and the POPS treaty—have been moving ahead, all of them with leadership provided by the European Union. |

Meantime, Mitsubishi's entire production facility works toward sustainability, promoting zero emissions, and reducing greenhouse gas and chemical emissions. Mitsubishi presents some startling refrigerator facts at its Web site: "In fact, in Japan alone, the combined savings in electricity from use of Mitsubishi Electrics latest model refrigerator throughout its full product lifecycle can yield sufficient energy savings to serve approximately 72,000 average-sized homes in Tokyo—a major metropolis with more than 13 million inhabitants—for a full year."52 Visit www.mit-subishielectric.com. |

| Starting in 1969, we began trying to change the vision of our country to one of sustainability and a restorative economy," Rodriguez said. "We did so not as a party platform but as a national policy. Because this is a national policy, changes in administrations do not affect our commitment. It isn't like you in America with your Republicans and Democrats so that we never know what environmental policy America will carry out from one administration to the next. Our consistent and unwavering commitment to valuing the many services a healthy environment performs has been enormously successful. |

But as thp evidence mounts on the contribution of toxins to the progression and sustainability of chronic disease, there is a call to action. I continue to be amazed by how effective a detoxification program can be for a person—even someone who didn't think he or she was "toxic" and who doesn't have any specific health concern.
Think of detoxification as a way of giving your body the equipment it needs to act effectively as its own shield against these incoming toxins, many of which we just cannot circumvent today. |

The key question that remains is the sustainability of living in the diet and lifestyle of the Culture of Life and not be swallowed again by the shadow of the Culture of Death, which is the predominant culture in the world today. It is this shadow of the Culture of Death in which diabetes is a pandemic symptom and our primary challenge here. Global warming is a similar symptom out of the shadow of the Culture of Death. |

Self-replicating seeds which have been saved year after year, generation after generation, throughout every culture on our planet, offer sustainability, freedom and independence. Corporate America wants dependence -- it wants centralized control, scarcity, a monopoly; it creates this by forcing people to use things like terminator seeds and by claiming intellectual property over things like the gene sequence of a seed.
The situation has become so bizarre that if you were to go back in time and try to explain to somebody in the 1970s what is happening today, they wouldn't believe you. |

To win that bet, we must move to a new model, one based on a standard of sustainability even higher than our current one-planet standard, while providing prosperity to billions around the world. And we need to do it in twenty-five years. And we need to get it right the first time. To lose that bet is to endanger everything we love.
¦MB That's the bad news.
Here's the good news: we don't have to destroy the planet or impoverish other people to live well. |

Our big project right now is sustainability in personal care. This is our industry, and it's important because this is the first industry outside of food that's going to go organic. It needs to go organic in a way that sets a precedent for other industries. This is the precedent we need to set in this industry, but generally, you watch what happens at Body Shop or any of the progressive businesses that sell out, and they just lose social mission. That's what we care about. We're kind of a nonprofit. We don't need to go out and hassle people to give us money. |

Here, everything is conducted with a sense of sustainability and a sense of sacredness for the earth itself. Nothing done here is harmful to the planet, and there are efforts to reinvest energy into the planet. One of the gardeners here, for example, describes his activities not as creating food but as creating topsoil, and the food that is grown out of the soil is really just a side effect. The key is to create new soil through soil probiotics. You activate the friendly microbes in the soil by composting kitchen scraps and treating the soil with love and positive intention. |

That is, the way to achieve sustainability is to first grow rich. Growing rich gives you the money to invest in more efficient and less environmentally damaging technologies, which in turn gives you a cleaner environment. There's even a technical description of this process, known as the environmental Kuznets curve.
This argument does have some apparent validity. Put simply, we in the Global North got rich essentially by digging and pumping fossil fuels out of the ground and burning them. |

Not just the company's ethics, commitment to environmental sustainability, economic support for the indigenous tribes in the Amazon and honesty in doing business with people, but also the company's remarkable vision. To make matters worse, this spiral seems to be accelerating, and the gap between sustainability and everyday practice is widening.
To use less of our planet and become responsible consumers, we have to ask ourselves the fundamental question, how much stuff do we need? The relationship between material wealth and well-being would seem to be a proportional one: when one increases, so does the other. But as it turns out, measures of wealth and health rise together only to a point, and then the pattern shifts. |
| They propose programs to help end extreme poverty; feed the hungry; empower women and improve maternal health; fight AIDS, malaria, and other epidemic diseases; protect environmental sustainability; and educate and provide medical care for all children.
In practice, the Millennium Development Goals are far from perfect. Critics rightly point out that they talk a lot about helping poor people and very little about protecting their human rights, building democracy, or righting basic injustices in our economic systems. |

The time has come for everybody—producers, traders, institutions, associations, and individual citizens—to ask themselves whether their lifestyle is sustainable and to take steps to make sustainability measurable and testable. That our lifestyle has not been sustainable until now is an established fact: the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment report quoted in the first chapter is quite clear on this point, and it is only the most recent and exhaustive of many reports that have been made over the past twenty years. |
