I went public with accusations about the suicide risk of of antidepressant drugs in 1999. At that time it was widely ridiculed and called a "conspiracy theory." Now, once again, it is emerging as scientific fact. There are so many murder/suicides linked to Prozac and other SSRI drugs that the public would be absolutely shocked to learn the true details of how many people have been killed by these drugs. Remember Phil Hartman, the comedian? He was killed by his wife who was also on these drugs. |

Finally, I want to mention that I warned people about the suicide risk of Prozac back in 1998. Back then, the idea that antidepressant drugs could cause suicides was considered ludicrous. It was fringe information, almost conspiracy theory stuff. Today, we're learning it's 100% true. And if you don't believe me, just ask the parents of all the children killed at the Colombine high school massacre in Colorado: their killers were on antidepressant drugs. Getting the picture yet? |

On closer examination of the initial reports, it was unclear whether the behaviors reported in these studies represented actual suicide attempts or other self-injurious behaviors that were not suicide-related. While it is good to know that there were no actual suicides, it is still not reassuring that suicide attempts or thoughts and other self-destructive behaviors can be a symptom of these drugs. This is one of the most serious issues that has taken its toll on our health and on our future in the name of profit. |

Gavin Lambert of Baker Medical Research Institute in Australia found that suicide rates peak in the spring just after winter's end. This seasonal variation also showed up in other studies.
At the same time, this phenomenon was absent when we reviewed suicide rates in an equatorial population in Singapore. This suggests that it takes a shorter summer with UVB rays and a longer winter without UVB rays and decreased vitamin D production for the seasonal suicide trend to occur.

With two small boys to care for, she saw no way out of the marriage short of hell, excommunication, or suicide. Because of her predicament, she became an alcoholic and even attempted suicide. On her own, she began to piece together the "Get aware, get willing, and get with it" steps I described earlier. She came to understand her path in life and how to change it into a more positive direction. She sought professional help, joined Alcoholics Anonymous and stopped drinking, got divorced, and went to college and earned a degree. |

I think the national average for suicide is 2 per 100,000, so that would be extremely high. But at any rate, I know that it's high because people are very sick, and they definitely don't want to live like that.
Ben: "Any option," as you were saying earlier.
Dr. Whitcomb: Yes, [suicide] is one of the options. I had a patient here a couple of months ago. I'd never spoken with her, and she had been referred by one of my regular patients. She was supposed to come in, but two weeks before she was supposed to get here, she committed suicide.
Ben: I'm sorry to hear that.

Shaffer announced that he had shown that screening adolescents at school could find those at risk of suicide, Solvay Pharmaceuticals, the maker of the antidepressant Luvox, presented two checks, each for $250,000, to the Foundation for suicide Prevention, where Dr. Shaffer served as president. The checks were part of Solvay s pledge to pay $1 million to the foundation, which has helped spread the word about TeenScreen. In 2005 the foundation's chairman was David A. Dodd, the former chief executive of Solvay. |

Some years ago, there were reports that low blood cholesterol levels might be associated with lung, liver, or colon cancer and that they might also contribute to accidental deaths and suicide. For example, one trial from Helsinki, Finland, seemed to have identified more traumatic deaths in patients using cholesterol-lowering drugs.2
But subsequent reanalysis of the Helsinki study and all other trials of the effects of reducing cholesterol levels, with or without drugs, have shown no increased incidence of suicide, accidents, or cancer. |

Enormous evidence linking mind-altering drugs with violent acts
In 2005, I reported on this site that Eli Lilly had full knowledge of a 1200% increase in suicide risk for takers of their Prozac drug, a popular anti-depressant SSRI medication. (See http://www.newstarget.com/003086.html )
In 2006, we reported the results of a study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry showing that teens taking antidepressant drugs are more likely to commit suicide (and to be "successful" at completing the act). See http://www.newstarget.com/020643. |

Nearly all cells have a built-in suicide program, called apoptosis. When cells reach a certain age, this suicide program literally stops the clock, triggering the cell's death and preventing its genetic program from turning cancerous. This is a normal process, and the immune system cleans up and disposes of dead cells.
However, cancer cells typically lack this suicide program and do not die until their host dies. In fact, some of the cancer cells used experimentally by researchers are the descendants of cells obtained during surgery on patients decades ago! |

They also are involved in helping cells "decide" whether to commit suicide. Basically, chaperone proteins are part of the biological mechanism for regulating gene expression. High chaperone levels tend to decrease the amount of toxic-cell and cancer-cell suicides. In other words, low chaperone levels encourage toxic cell and cancer cell suicides. Fasting lowers the chaperone level. This heat-shock protein response can be set off by environmental stresses, physiological stresses, and even non-stressful conditions. The non-stressful conditions include cell cycles and developmental pathways. |

However, not one of the 5,000 schizophrenic patients under Dr Hoffer's care has committed suicide. When one young patient relapsed and was admitted to hospital, his treating psychiatrist refused to continue the vitamin program and prescribed only drugs. A few months after discharge, this patient killed himself.
Not only does vitamin B-3 treatment reduce the incidence of suicide, orthomolecular therapy markedly decreases the number of re-admissions to hospital. The cost savings to the healthcare system are enormous. |

Men commit suicide four times more often than women, however women attempt suicide 2-3 times as often as men.3
How accurate are these numbers? Establishing just how many people suffer from mental illness—that is, national estimates of prevalence—is problematic. There are two possible sources of information: First, we can collect data from treatment sites, such as visits to doctors' offices, pharmaceutical prescriptions filled, or even hospital admissions; most of the information we consider subsequently in this chapter is from these sources. |

Death" after helping to assist the suicide of several patients. A little-known story is that Dr. Kevorkian's first assisted-suicide patient, Janet Adkins of Portland, Oregon, was a so-called Alzheimer's victim. Her family members said that she had made the decision to die when she was first diagnosed with having AD—that her outlook was so bleak after the brief conversation with her doctor that she couldn't bear the idea of suffering from the dread disease. Even though Mrs. Adkins was still hale enough to beat her sons at tennis, she made the decision in 1990 to contact Dr. |

In reverse order of causality, they are:
First, there does not seem to be any relationship, or at least "no clear relationship," between SSRIs and suicide. Drug companies have broadcast this conclusion. We are not guilty, they declare. This finding, according a 2005 guest editorial in the British Medical Journal "should encourage doctors to prescribe effective doses of these drugs for [moderate to severe depression]."42 Well, perhaps. Yet for us a finding that SSRIs do not (or may not) cause suicide is hardly a positive. |

I have seen a patient who first came to me after a suicide attempt using massive painkillers. He only slept for 15 hours after taking a dose that would have killed anyone else. The reason: the massive amount of pain activation of the brain that galvanized the system. The drug had met its match and wasn't strong enough to cap the electrical activity and put out his lights. Those who have had very painful cancer, for example, and have been on strong painkillers for a long time, will almost never be able to commit suicide through the use of painkillers. |

My study of the effects of Accutane on brain function using brain imaging was first presented in November 2004. My theory was that if Accutane affected the brain and caused depression in that way, we should be able to detect it with brain imaging. My colleagues and I did in fact find that Accutane caused a decrease in function in the orbitofrontal cortex. That was identical to what we found in patients who developed depression. |

After one of TS's unsuccessful suicide attempts, a friend who had some knowledge of geopathic stress began to wonder if that might be a contributing cause of his extreme illness. He got an expert to check out his property. This man discovered that the lot TS was living on was the worst he had ever encountered. There was a wide watercourse underneath the property, combined with crossing earth radiation lines. The expert built a device he called a "white energy emitter," and placed it on the property. |

We are committing suicide as a species today. It is well past time to wake up, and the cost of staying ignorant is going to increase exponentially in the decades ahead. Eventually, people will have no choice but to wake up and do something about it. I hope that happens sooner rather than later because when it's too late, it's too late for all of us.
So, what can you do as an individual? You can engage in sustainable consumption, and support those products and companies that have a sustainable model for production. You can use cleaner energy sources. |

To anyone who believes this woman actually committed suicide with a pair of handcuffs, I've got a bridge to sell ya... and a Bill of Rights, and a Constitution, and a "Free" nation, come to think of it. Barring some freak-of-nature occurrence in that holding cell that I can't even imagine (like maybe lightning struck her handcuffs and caused her to die), this is nothing other than a case of the law enforcement murder of an innocent woman who's only crime was missing her flight and screaming in public.
She will not, of course, be the last victim of Police State brutality. |

Nutrients depleted: The drug phenytoin depletes biotin, calcium, folic acid, and vitamins D and K, plus vitamins Bl and B12; primidone depletes biotin and folic acid; and valproic acid depletes carnitine. Note: If you're taking primidone or carbamazepine, note that vitamin B3 interferes with the breakdown of the drugs, and can cause an unsafely high drug level. |

They ignore the suicide command that noncancerous cells obey when they become infected or damaged. In biological terms, that makes cancer cells "immortal"—they can divide forever. Scientists are currently working to perfect a test that detects increased telomerase activity; that could give doctors a powerful new tool to help reveal hidden cancer cells.
The other exceptions to the Hayflick limit, by the way, are those current stars of political, medical, and ethical debate—stem cells. Stem cells are "undifferentiated" cells—in other words, they can divide into many different kinds of cells. |

With private donations my colleagues and I eventually performed a study showing that Accutane affected brain function, suggesting how it could cause depression and suicide.1
You might think that people would be happy to learn more about a potentially dangerous side effect, but they weren't. Dermatologists who prescribe Accutane told me that I shouldn't do this research, because Accutane was a "good" drug that helped a lot of people with severe acne. I asked the FDA and the NIH to support clinical trials investigating the relationship between Accutane and depression. |

| There have been hints for many years that antidepressants, such as Paxil, when given to children, can cause serious side effects, including suicide, but the FDA delayed taking any action to prevent these drugs from being prescribed for children. Eventually, they required the manufacturers of ten antidepressant drugs to add further warnings to their labels, and proposed that closer monitoring would be needed for both adults and children. |
| In March 2004, the FDA was compelled to tell the makers of 10 antidepressant drugs that they must tell doctors and patients using these drugs that both adults and children need to be closely monitored for worsening of depression and thoughts of suicide. In City Pages.com News, (2004), reporter Beth Hawkins went so far as to say that FDA honchos opposed new warning labels for antidepressants for fear it would leave pharmaceutical corporations open to liability. |
