For one, I believe we need a naturally occurring standard for products. Especially for foods and medicines, and for vitamins and mineral supplements. It would be a standard, much like the organic standard, but going far more deeply into the problem. That would demonstrate which companies are producing products that are taken directly from plant or botanical sources, and do not contain any synthetics at all. I believe a naturally occurring standard needs to be implemented in such a way to where we have more choices available to us. |

For many years vitamin A activity was measured in International Units (IU) The current international standard of measure for vitamin A activity, however, is retinol activity equivalency (RAE). The RAE uses a microgram (meg) of retinol as a standard to measure the potency of the forms of vitamin A. Three meg of RAE is equivalent to ten International Units. The RDA for an adult man is 3000 IU, which is equivalent to 900 meg of RAE. For adult women, the RDA is 2333 IU, which is equivalent to 700 meg of RAE. Please refer to Table 3-1 for more complete RDA information. |

For years, the organic purists have argued with the not-so-purists about creating an industry standard for organic personal care products. The ideal standards would "give the consumer what the consumer thinks they're paying for, and at the same time support family farmers by encouraging more businesses to source organic," explained Craig Minnowa, an environmental scientist with the Organic Consumers Association. |

Mike: Do you think the industry leaders -- Microsoft, AOL, Yahoo, MSN -- can all agree on a technical standard?
Sterne: Yes. But as happens with any standard, who's standard do you pick? It's sort of like the instant messaging wars -- it's going to be a problem for a while, and eventually they're all going to say, "Let's interoperate," and that's the best way to go.
Mike: Let's suppose then that some technical solution gets implemented, it works, spam drops by 98 percent or better overnight, which is what I'm hoping for as well.
Sterne: I'd be a happy camper.
Mike: Oh yeah. |

In a subject population that is eating a fairly standard Western diet, as this one is, you're never going to capture the effects, good or bad, of more radically different ways of eating. (In his book, Campbell reports Walter Willett's personal response to this criticism: "You may be right, Colin, but people don't want to go there.")
The so-called gold standard in nutrition research is the large-scale intervention study. In these studies, of which the Women's Health Initiative is the biggest and best known, a large population is divided into two groups. |

Although they cannot directly force a country to adopt an international standard, they can make you wish you had through things like trade sanctions.
They have a mechanism by which they can twist the arm of any country -- even the United States -- and in essence, blackmail you into changing your laws. What they can do if you do not change your laws to conform to an international standard like a Codex standard, is challenge you in a trade dispute, and the dispute settlement body of the WTO is a Star Chamber proceeding.
Star Chamber proceedings do not operate in accordance with U.S. law. |

The hysteria of modern medicine
In my opinion, any woman taking Lybrel is embarking on a foolish experiment with her own health. It is not merely a dangerous course of action to pursue, it is the ultimate surrender of personal responsibility for one's own health. It also admits to a male-dominated medical system that womanhood is, indeed, some sort of terrible disease that requires treatment. |

What if there were a standard for musicians, like there is for medical doctors, where they would all have to be able to play and perform just like Jimi (or James) because that was the accepted standard of musical care?
That is one of the reasons I chose Chiropractic and Naturopathic medical degrees, because these professions still embrace the eclectic spirit. While it is wonderful that the science of medicine has grown to such great maturity, let us never forget or abandon the Art of medicine. |

Unfortunately, there is no standard reference range for the fructosamine test, which makes the practical use of this test a bit more challenging than Hb A . When you get your lab results, your doctor should explain the reference range used by the specific lab. A standard reference range takes into account your age, your gender, a sample population (for example, if you are pregnant, your results will be compared with those of a pregnant population), and the testing method. |

There are two versions of the GI, one based on a standard of comparison that uses glucose scored as 100; the other is based on white bread. Foods are tested against the results of the selected standard. Refined sugars, white flour products, and other sources of simple sugars are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, causing a rapid rise in blood sugar. In response, the body boosts secretion of insulin by the pancreas. High-sugar junk food diets definitely lead to poor blood sugar regulation, obesity, and ultimately type 2 diabetes. |

In one industry after another, a new double standard is emerging: that between the protection offered Europe's citizens, and those afforded to Americans. Repeatedly, American companies that have been forced to meet higher standards in Europe, claim to Americans that they cannot do the same thing back in the United States. Why can't companies do in America what they're already doing in Europe? |
| Goss went so far as to argue for such a standard in Congress in 2006, but even the industry could not convince the federal government; his plea, as Goss put it, "did not get much response in the current political climate."
In the meantime, U.S. goods now pass through a gauntlet of tests and certifications to enable them to be exported to Europe, much like American farmers must now test their crops to ensure compliance with Europe's tougher standards. |

This is the new standard of "conclusive" science in medicine today?
Give me a break. The only thing that can be conclusively derived from observing all this is that mainstream media journalists continue to function at a very low level of scientific literacy, lacking any skills of mental reason by which scientific studies might be assessed. There is no thought that has gone into the media's reporting of this story; only bandwagon parroting of each other's bad conclusions of a study that, in reality, proves nothing. |

Again, half of the patients received the usual care, and the other half received green tea polyphenol supplements in addition to the standard treatment. Kidney function in the green tea group was significantly improved after one and two months of supplementation. The physicians speculated that the ability of green tea to disarm free radicals played a role in the beneficial effects for kidney patients.25

Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup provides a whopping 890 mg of sodium per serving and 2,225 grams of sodium for a standard 10.75-ounce can. Sodium, of course, may contribute to high blood pressure, and some research suggests that excess salt is a factor in osteoporosis and prediabetes. Therefore, it is best to limit your salt intake, so reject high-sodium foods.

Chinese physicians at the Tien Jing Third Central Hospital provided evidence of another immune-supporting effect of green tea when they found that seventy-two hyperthyroid patients who were given green tea polyphenol supplements daily for eight weeks in addition to their regular treatment regimen maintained higher levels of granulocytes and white blood cells than did seventy-five hyperthyroid patients who received standard blood-improving drugs. |
| All of these patients, who had a variety of diseases responsible for their kidney failure, including diabetes, hypertensive renal disease, and infections, received the standard treatment protocol (low salt, high-quality protein diet) while half were also given dietary supplements of green tea polyphenols. The polyphenol group showed significant improvements in their condition, as evidenced by improved blood and urine profiles and less puffiness, lumbago, fatigue, and dizziness.24 One can infer from this that, short of acute renal failure, green tea can be a useful supplement to drug therapy. |

Those families that live the standard American lifestyle -- heavy toxic burden, no nutrition, dependence on pharmaceuticals -- they do not have a genetic future. At some point, the infertility rates become 100 percent in those groups. Is that an alarmist statement on my part, or is that accurate?

In reality, there's plenty of evidence. It's just not convincing to them. Nothing would be. You can't convince tobacco companies that nicotine is addictive, either. You can't convince utility companies that power lines cause brain cancer in children. |
