Conscious Health: A Complete Guide to Wellness Through Natural Means

Ron Garner

Body systems such as the liver and colon have become congested due to the intake of unhealthy foods, faulty digestion, and bowel stagnation, and are signaling their clear need for detoxification. When we ignore what the body is telling us and just mask the odor with toothpaste or breath fresheners, we are not working with the body to relieve the stress it is being subjected to. If we do not change our nutritional lifestyles to include detoxifying and healthier foods, we allow the overload of organs and congestion and stagnation to persist.

Lavender is one of the herbs I use to treat people with stagnation in the gastrointestinal tract or emotional stagnation. The most common emotional condition that fills this description is stagnant depression (see the Holy Basil monograph in chapter 7). It is a depression in which a person has had a traumatic experience that becomes the focus of his or her life. Everything comes to revolve around that event, with constant repetitive thinking about the experience. Lavender, rosemary, holy basil, and damiana all help to resolve this type of depression.

If Qi stagnation in the spleen and stomach impair the normal function of ascending and descending; if Qi stagnation in the lungs inhibits the function of descending; or if the liver is stagnated, the manifestations are hypochondriac pain, stifling sensations in the chest, hernia pain, nodules, distension and pain in the breasts, or irregular menstruation. The drugs regulating Qi are aromatic, pungent, and bitter. They are good for promoting the freeing up of Qi and are indicated in both Qi stagnation and Qi perversion.
DRUGS REGULATING QI Qi means energy or bioenergy. Qi stagnation may be mainfested as stilling distension and pain, whereas Qi perversion presents as nausea, vomiting, belching, asthma, and cough.
DRUGS RELIEVING FOOD STAGNATION Drugs relieving food stagnation are indicated when distension and fullness in the epigastric and abdominal regions, belching, sour regurgitation, nausea, vomiting, abnormal bowel movement, or indigestion due to weakness of the spleen and stomach occurs. These drugs improve the appetite and digestion and remove stagnated food. They are usually used to treat dyspepsia or indigestion. The most commonly used drugs relieving food stagnation are Crataegi (fruit), Hordei germinatus (fruit), Oiyzae germi-natus (fruit), and Raphani (seed).

The technology for making ammonia synthesis the dominant means of fixing atmospheric nitrogen arrived just in time for the industrial stagnation of the Depression. Ammonia plant construction began again in earnest in the run-up to the Second World War. The Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) dams provided ideal sites for additional ammonia plants built to manufactute explosives. One plant was operating when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor; ten were operating by the time Berlin fell.

It also sketched out Ayurvedic principles, organization, and models of the body; described the discoveries and innovations of Charaka and Susruta—and bemoaned Ayurveda's losses, its 'history of stagnation and decay' caused by religious scruples, invasions, and internal feuding, as losses to medicine as a whole.29 Articles following this format appeared sporadically in the medical press until the 1970s. A 1964 Lancet editorial exemplifies another way in which information about Ayurveda came to the attention of the medical profession.

To treat flatulence due to stagnation: Symptoms include gas with a strong odor, a bloated abdomen, and constipation. Mix 12 g of Mu Xiang (costus root), 10 g Chai Hu (hare's ear root), 6 g of Sha Ren (cardamon), 12 g of Yu Jin (turmeric tuber), 6 g of Da Huang (rhubarb root and rhizome), and 12 g of Fa Ben Xia (pinellia rhizome). • To treat flatulence due to digestive system deficiency: Symptoms include a bloated abdomen, passing gas, irregular bowel movements, and/or fatigue.
Chelidonium: This herb encourages liver detoxification and repair, allowing toxins to be eliminated from the body and improving food digestion. Less stagnation in the digestive system equals sweeter-smelling breath. Dilute 3-5 drops of a tincture in 1 cup of water and drink twice a day. Swish the liquid around in your mouth for one to two minutes before swallowing. Prickly ash: Use this herb to treat bad breath that is related to dry mucous membranes. Prickly ash stimulates the production of saliva and creates a slight tingling effect when placed on the tongue.
This pungent herb is indicated for individuals who are sluggish and cold with circulatory stagnation. Studies show it is the long-term ingestion of capsaicin, the active constituent of cayenne, that is most effective at decreasing inflammation and reducing mucus production due to allergies. Take 1-5 drops of tincture in water twice daily. Do not use this herb if you have digestive ulcers or nightshade allergies. 298 W SORE THROAT DIAGNOSIS A sore throat, also known as pharyngitis or tonsillitis, occurs when the pharynx or tonsils become inflamed.
Cleavers: Cleavers can be used during an acute sinus infection, but is best for treating stagnation most often found in chronic conditions. Take 30-60 drops of tincture per day. Osha: Osha is helpful in treating upper respiratory conditions, especially for increased mucus production and congestion. Boil 1 tsp of root per cup of water for 20 minutes, or take 30 drops of tincture, and drink four times daily. Sinus oil blend: Create a cooling decongestant for the sinuses using antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory oils.

A crucial part of the project of modernizing Ayurveda involved incorporating the language and practices of science to restore its lost authority and rescue it from its centuries of'stagnation'. Thus Gopalacharlu drew attention to his 'laboratory' and asserted frequently that his medicines were 'scientifically prepared'. His elite visitors commented enthusiastically on the progressiveness of his approach. Sir P. N.

Lessons of abundance: be a river, not a dam

The dam model is the model of stagnation. If you function as a dam in life you're typically espousing a philosophy of scarcity. This is how a lot of people accidentally end up functioning as dams. They approach life with a fear... a fear of not having enough. They're afraid they won't have enough food or money. They contract and stop the outflow of resources, thinking if they conserve more money, if they try to keep everything for themselves, they will be better protected. And in fact, that only creates a situation of stagnation.

Coriander seed stimulates digestion, breaks up mucus, and disperses stagnation. Coriander seed tea is used to treat allergies, amenorrhea, anxiety, appetite loss, asthma, bloating, burning pain during urination, colic, cramps, cystitis, diabetes, diarrhea, fever, flatulence, halitosis, hay fever, hernia pain, high cholesterol, indigestion, insomnia, measles, menstrual cramps, migraines, nausea, neuralgia, poor digestive assimilation, rash, rheumatism, sore throat, stomachache, and vomiting. Coriander seed is often combined with laxative herbs such as senna to curb intestinal gripe.
Bupleurum is used to treat amenorrhea, alcohol and drug abuse (by helping clear the liver of old emotions), anger, asthma, bloating, cancer, capillary weakness, cirrhosis, colds, coughs, depression, dizziness, epilepsy, fever, flatulence, grief, hemorrhoids, hepatitis, irregular menses, irritability, irritable bowel syndrome, liver stagnation, malaria, moodiness, organ prolapse, pain, premenstrual syndrome, respiratory congestion, and tumors. Edible Uses The roots are not generally considered edible, aside from as tea. The young white shoots and leaves can be consumed as vegetables.
It induces perspiration, stimulates the nerves, relieves nerve pain, clears chi stagnation, promotes circulation, and imparts a glow to the skin. It also stimulates hydrochloric acid production and thus aids digestion. Most pungent herbs contain some sort of essential oils that move internal energy to the surface. Many of these essential oils have antimicrobial activity. Pungent is cooling to the interior and warming to the exterior of the body. Basil, cinnamon, ginger, and mint all represent the pungent flavor and are good to use for a cold condition.
Saint John's wort restores the nerves, breaks up chi stagnation, and calms and lifts the spirit. It also promotes tissue repair, deters infection, and helps relieve pain. It can help heal damaged nerves when used internally or externally. It is thought that its action results in part from its ability to block the reabsorption of serotonin and that it might also enhance the body's receptivity to light. One of its components, hypericin, increases serotonin and melatonin metabolism.

Such stored unrest and antagonism can disturb the Kapha's basic metabolism and cause congestion, stagnation, and a heavy form of depression. Depression and melancholia are the vibrations that transform the Kapha's most precious assets into very destructive forces. Most cancers are caused by an imbalance of Kapha dosha, and Kapha types are the most likely to develop Kapha imbalances; hence they are more prone to develop cancers than other body types. Because Kapha dosha controls the moist tissues of the body, the mucus lining is the first area to show signs of imbalance.
This leads to fecal stagnation and the development of hemorrhoids, appendicitis, polyps, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticular disease and colon cancer. On the other hand, squatting relaxes the puborectalis muscle and straightens the rectum. Infants of every culture instinctively adopt this posture to relieve themselves. As research has shown, if they don't get "retrained" to sit on Western style toilet bowls, they rarely develop these intestinal disorders, unless their dietary and lifestyle habits are unbalanced.

STAGE 2: TOXEMIA The stagnation of Stage 1 leads to a buildup of toxins in the body, and these substances begin to saturate the blood, lymph, and cells. Stage 2 is typified by sluggish energy, and in the case of diabetes, we already have cells that are developing the preconditions for being insensitive to the signaling of insulin due to their toxic state. John Tilden writes in the chapter "Toxemia" in Herbert Shelton's The History of Natural Hygiene: The toxin theory of the healing art is grounded on the truth that toxemia is the basic source of all diseases.

It likes movement and dislikes stagnation. When it is affected by emotional factors the functional qi stagnates. stagnation of liver qi can transform into fire, which in turn can impair the yin. When the yin is impaired, deficiency fire agitates inside, impairing the heart in the upper heater and the kidney in the lower heater. If this condition lasts for a long time, the yin of the heart, liver, and kidney are consumed, and they act on each other, depleting each other further. The disease is caused by deficiency but its symptoms are excess.

This is primarily due to three reasons: First, there's the mucous response by the body, which results in digestive stagnation and a lack of healthy movement in the bowels. Second, cows' milk has no fiber, and since fiber is needed for the healthy movement of substances through the digestive tract, cows' milk contributes more to stagnation (constipation) than movement. Third, many people drink milk in place of water, and water is precisely the liquid they need in order to promote healthier bowel movements. Water lubricates, milk stagnates.
