In addition, diarrhea, extreme athletic physical training, sodas (especially cola type sodas, both diet and regular), sodium (high salt intake), stress (physical and mental—anything that activates a person's fight or flight reaction), and intense sweating all diminish magnesium levels.
Magnesium deficiency at a cellular level where it counts is not easy to diagnose, as serum magnesium levels do not correlate to muscle or cellular magnesium levels. |

Carbonated beverages aren't as bad for bone health as the acid in many other foods, but we do know that children who drink sodas in general have reduced bone mass as adults and fracture more often. The same is true for adults who drink sodas. The reason appears to be that if you drink those kinds of drinks, you're less likely to drink healthy drinks that contain calcium and vitamin D. Evidence shows that if you can get the calcium in other ways, the soda should be OK. Vegetarian protein, interestingly, negatively affects bone strength. |

Today, too many of us are drinking fluids that are high in calories like sodas and juices. Indeed, research has shown that adults today are drinking about 20 ounces more caloric beverages a day14. In fact, caloric beverages now make up 21 percent15 of our total calorie intake and sodas and fruit drinks alone account for 43 percent16 of our total added sugars in the diet (18 of those 42 teaspoons of sugar we eat daily!). That adds up to a tremendous number of calories in a year. And unfortunately most of us don't count those calories. |

In the interest of cutting excess calories, it behooves us all to avoid regular sodas and other sweetened drinks whenever possible. The best way to do this is to drink "no calorie" beverages instead. Some of the more obvious options are flavored mineral waters, seltzer water with a slice of lemon or lime, diet sodas (although some experts advise limiting these because they contain artificial sweeteners), and plain tea and coffee.
Even better, of course, is drinking beverages that contain potentially protective substances! |

Soda
Aside from directly promoting diabetes and obesity, sodas also contain high amounts of phosphoric acid, a substance that dissolves bones and causes a loss of bone mineral density. This causes massive tooth decay as well as a shrinking jaw bone and overall skeletal fragility. Diet sodas are even worse, since they contain chemical sweeteners linked to neurological disorders and learning disabilities.
16. Air fresheners
Air fresheners contain cancer-causing chemicals. Unleashing them in the house exposes children to these chemicals, promoting asthma and other respiratory problems. |

Pathological aggressiveness in children and teenagers is related to the consumption of the refined sugars found in sweets and sodas. Jails are a showcase for this behavioral problem. In one of them a dietary experiment was carried out where sweets, cookies, and sodas were exchanged for fruit, fresh vegetables, and water. Aggressiveness and other behavior problems among the prisoners diminished remarkably in just a couple of weeks! This simple, inexpensive experiment clearly demonstrates the relationship between behavioral problems and diet.

Aspartame, the chemical with the brand name NutraSweet that is found in many candies and sodas, is non-nutritional and is not absorbed into your body. But the bacteria in your gut will attempt to treat aspartame the same way they treat lactose, and the sudden introduction of large amounts of the artificial sweetener into your system will produce huge amounts of methane gas. You'll begin to experience a bout of severe crampy pain, gas, and horrible diarrhea. Fortunately, it will go away. |

The main problem with cravings arises when cravings for chocolate, sodas, sweets, and ice cream become substitutes for nutritious foods. Cravings often can also be clues about specific nutritional needs. A craving for ice cream may indicate an increased need for protein, fat, or calcium. A craving for acidic foods like pickles may be a clue to increased need for calcium or salt. A craving for sweets may indicate a need for more protein in the diet. Cravings for chips can indicate a need for more salt and fats. |

Supplements: Zinc gluconate lozenges have both antiviral and immune-stimulating effects. Adults should take 25 mg per day; children should take a lower dosage. For example, a 30 lb child can be given 5 mg of zinc per day while suffering from swimmer's ear. Take 500 mg and 1,000 mg of vitamin C a day in separate doses to stimulate immune function. Reduce the dosage if you notice diarrhea. Vitamin A supports immunity. |

Any digestible carbohydrate will do just fine as far as the bacteria are concerned, since they will progressively convert it to sucrose; this includes refined flour products and all sources of sugar, such as candy, honey, dried fruits, sweetened cereals, ice cream, canned or frozen fruits in syrup, hard candy, puddings, sodas, and other sweets. Since carbohydrates are an important part of our diet, they cannot be eliminated, but we can minimize their adverse dental effects and thereby discourage dental decay. |

In addition to caffeine, green, black, and oolong teas also contain small amounts of the methylxanthines called theobromine and theophylline. All of these methylxanthines are physiologically active, but each acts in slightly different ways in the body. |

Many kidney stones are formed as a result of insufficient water intake and the consumption of foods or beverages that have dehydrating effects, including meat, artificial sweeteners, sugar, alcohol, tea, coffee and sodas. Also, smoking cigarettes or watching television for too many hours has a dehydrating effect on the body and causes urine to become overly concentrated. This increases the precipitation of urinary constituents. |

The guys who consumed the largest quantities of phosphate-based sodas had the highest rate of stone recurrence.
We know that most stones are made from calcium oxalate, and we know limiting highoxalate foods is a really good idea. But what about limiting the other half of this duo— calcium? On the face of it, it sounds like a good idea. But it isn't, even though it's still given as advice by people who don't know what they're talking about.
"There's actually an inverse relationship between calcium intake and stone formation," Rubman says. |

The rhizome is not generally considered edible, though it is used to flavor soft drinks, especially root beer, and to produce foam on drinks such as beers and sodas. The young shoots are edible raw or cooked, as are the tendrils of the vine.
Other Uses
A red dye is made from the ripe tendrils. In folkloric tradition it is used to attract love and prosperity, and it is said to excite the passions, making men more virile and women more sensuous. |
