Adaptogens: Herbs for Strength, Stamina, and Stress Relief

David Winston, RH(AHG), and Steven Maimes
See book keywords and concepts
The one instance where I think we forget to use adaptogens is in smoking cessation. Quitting smoking is always difficult. Most people make it through the physical withdrawal period with the use of appropriate nervines and pure resolve. But people smoke as a way of coping with stress, and they need a new way to handle their triggers if they are going to remain nonsmok-ers. Adaptogens help change how they react to stress. I find the adaptogenic effect becomes more noticeable four to six weeks into not smoking, which is about the time that most folk's resolve melts away.

This might be hard for you to believe, but it wasn't too long ago that doctors routinely recommended smoking cigarettes, too. The Journal of the American Medical Association, in fact, ran numerous ads promoting Camels as "recommended by more doctors than any other cigarette!" Doctors talked up the "benefits" of smoking cigarettes, urging people to start smoking in order to improve brain function or even -- get this -- make their teeth stronger!

Within a day after he resumed smoking, he was back in his deep depression. The ironic thing was that he had a brother who was a tobacco company executive, who kept sending him free cartons ofcigarettes. Now when we made the connection to his cigarette smoking, he stopped smoking. Thirty days later, after he had been depressed for four years and hadn't been able to work, he was back in school teaching.

Among the U.S. population in general, smoking has steadily decreased since 1965. In 1965, 42.4% of American adults were smokers, compared to 20.9% in 2004. This decline began after the Surgeon General's first report on the dangers of smoking in 1964. This warning could have been made earlier -- in 1957 and again in 1959 then-Surgeon General Leroy Burney was the first federal officer to publicly state smoking was a cause of lung cancer.

Avoid smoking inside the home. Go outside to smoke (at least 1 00 feet away from the house). • When you have the urge to smoke, distract yourself with an activity of some kind or take a short walk. • Ask visitors to step out of the home if they must smoke. • When going to restaurants and other public places, ask ahead of time if they are smoke-free or have designated non-smoking areas. • Never smoke near a child, not even outdoors. • If quitting smoking altogether is impossible, smoke all-natural or organic tobacco.

OVERDOSAGE The lethal dosage for nicotine lies between 40 to 100 mg, although this can be considerably elevated through habituation (thus, with smoking tobacco, 2 to 7 g of the drug; one cigarette contains 10 mg nicotine, of which 1 to 2 mg are inhaled during smoking). Symptoms of an acute poisoning include dizziness, salivation, vomiting, diarrhea, trembling of the hands, and feelings of weakness in the legs; very high dosages can lead rapidly to spasms, unconsciousness, cardiac arrest and respiratory failure.

Two of these patients stopped smoking cigarettes within 2 to 3 weeks. The other five halved their tobacco intake. Nicotine probably attaches to the same brain receptors as niacin. If this is correct, flooding the brain with niacin should mitigate the effects of nicotine. Obviously, this is a possible treatment for nicotine addiction that requires much more attention. 1 Wrong Diagnosis? Sounds 43%."64 cancer of the colon or rectum by up to This seems like an reasonable, but unfortunately, the factor of secondhand smoke must also be considered. Exposure to secondhand smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), can cause toxic buildup in people who don't smoke. Secondhand smoke can even lead to colon cancer by damaging genes of anyone exposed to it.
Nine of these states ban smoking in nearly all workplaces. This is encouraging but we still have a long way to go. Children and non-smoking adults continue to suffer from the ill effects of secondhand smoke in their own homes due to the presence of others whom smoke. Around 60% of children under the age of five live in or visit a home with at least one smoker. Children are especially sensitive to secondhand smoke, as their developing organs are more easily damaged. Protect yourself and your family from the dangers of environmental tobacco smoke!

Niacin can mitigate some of its harmful effects, for example, by decreasing the elevation of free fatty acids caused by smoking. In one experiment, free fatty acids rose by 30% in the 30 minutes after the subject had smoked two cigarettes. Injections of nicotine also increased dogs' cholesterol levels by 34% and decreased the flow of blood in the coronary vessels. By blocking the release of free fatty acids, niacin prevents one of the health-damaging cycles related to smoking. Stroke Strokes are largely preventable if certain risk factors are avoided.

Doctors talked up the "benefits" of smoking cigarettes, urging people to start smoking in order to improve brain function or even -- get this -- make their teeth stronger! The truth is doctors are easily influenced by commercial interests and can be readily convinced to recommend practically any product, no matter how toxic, unhealthy or deadly to consumers. Just look at how many doctors wrote prescriptions for Vioxx, for example, after being visited by a Vioxx drug rep pushing it as a "miracle drug" for joint pain.

Omar quit smoking and redoubled his efforts to follow Diet Evolution. Two months later the blockage was down 20 percent; nonetheless, Omar opted for an operation to allay his fears. When we opened his carotid artery, there was absolutely no. evidence of cholesterol plaque; instead, a thin layer of scar tissue was all that remained of the blockage. We placed a tiny patch over it and sewed him up.

Other factors that generate excessive amounts of protein in the blood include stress, smoking, and drinking alcohol and caffeinated beverages. smoking, for example, causes inhaled carbon monoxide to destroy red blood cells, thus unleashing a large amount of protein particles into the blood. Once enough of these degenerate proteins are deposited in the blood vessel walls, adequate quantities of cholesterol can no longer reach the body's cells, and the liver cells automatically raise cholesterol production. The side effect of this response is gallstone formation.

Nutrition impinges on cardiovascular health in several critical ways.

The solution to all this is simple. Ban smoking on all the sidewalks and walkways, create a designated smoking room in the basement, and make people go there to light up. Now, I'm a big believer in personal freedom, and I don't give a hoot if people go suck on burnt tobacco in their own homes or cars, but when THEIR smoke gets in the way of MY lungs, then I'm going to say something about it. Next year, I might bring a gas mask and have a picture taken in front of the Expo West logo, surrounded by smokers. Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words.

I find the adaptogenic effect becomes more noticeable four to six weeks into not smoking, which is about the time that most folk's resolve melts away. In addiction, adaptogens often express themselves by making people more inclined to make positive changes for themselves without as much effort. Explaining why they are taking the adaptogen helps people understand that smoking is more than an addiction to nicotine. It makes them aware that there are tools to help them with the more difficult problem of finding a way to cope with the stress in their life.

So if you have trouble sleeping, your first course of action is to stop smoking and stop drinking alcohol and caffeinated drinks. What should people with medically unexplained fatigue or pain do about smoking, alcohol, and caffeine? They too should stop using these drugs. Besides all its other health risks, nicotine is associated with fatigue. To stop using it is a no brainer. When I ask my patients about alcohol, the vast majority tell me they do not drink except on rare social occasions.

A rarely discussed reason why people become addicted to smoking cigarettes derives from the breath control that smoking entails. When someone smokes a cigarette they fall into a habitual breathing pattern that fundamentally alters their state and energy level until they feel "relaxed." Practicing deep breathing helps overcome addictions to smoking. By breathing deeper and more rhythmically, you become calmer and can concentrate and work better. Slow, deep diaphragmatic breathing was the first health discipline I really practiced consistently for years.

In the seventies and eighties, they began to figure out that smoking is bad for you. Before that, however, doctors could actually be found as spokespersons for cigarettes. They also said smoking helps you concentrate, and that it's good for your nervous system. They made many ridiculous claims about cigarettes.

Some early studies suggested a "protective" effect for Alzheimer's, but later and better-designed studies showed the opposite: more dementia with more smoking.5 Ultimately, while I do hold some hope for drugs acting on nicotinic receptors, I must stress that the potential of these compounds is limited. Eventually, cholinergic drugs may provide some better ability to improve symptoms, but large effects associated with disease modification are less likely in my opinion. I must also reiterate that readers should not start smoking or chewing nicotine gum to receive a cognitive enhancement!

REPPED: Separate studies on two continents have concluded smoking is associated with decreased productivity on the job, both in the civilian and military sectors. The studies were published in the April 2007 issue of the journal Tobacco Control. "In both the civilian and military sectors, smoking has been linked to disability and job-related outcomes, including decreased productivity, increased absenteeism, and long and more frequent work breaks," reported Terry L. Conway, Ph.D. and colleagues at San Diego State University Graduate School of Public Health.
