Smoking, irritating smells or fumes, nasal injuries, and growths in the nose may cause chronic sinusitis. sinusitis can also be caused by allergic reactions, particularly to dairy products and airborne allergens. (See allergies.)
Symptoms can include but are not limited to nasal congestion, fever, facial pain, headache, earache, toothache, general malaise, cranial pressure, clear or green/yellow mucus discharge, and a loss of the sense of smell. |

For example, it's not uncommon for a chronic fatigue patient to report having had repeated attacks of sinusitis. When this is the case, I ask the patient if he or she has problems with stuffed nose, postnasal drip, and pain or pressure in the face. Answering yes suggests the existence of chronic sinusitis, and then I try to confirm that diagnosis by doing a CT scan of the sinuses, which are located just under and above the eyes. The scan can reveal radiographic evidence of chronic sinus infection, usually seen as a thickening of the sinus linings. |

I continued to have sinusitis and pneumonia annually for 5 years, so my doctor sent me to an allergist. He diagnosed several allergies and added a prescription for Nasacort to the Clarinex.
Two years ago, having suffered through another bout of sinusitis and pneumonia, I saw an integrative alternative medicine physician. He took me off Clarinex and prescribed butterbur, stinging nettles, and quercitin instead. I've taken this combination for 2 years and it has reduced the frequency of the sinusitis.
I read that I should take butterbur only 6 weeks a year. |

| The only effective treatments for sinusitis are intravenous antibiotics given for three days to one week in the hospital.. .or surgery to restore normal drainage in the sinus cavities. Few patients really need these treatments because true sinusitis is rare.
Most patients can control sinus discomfort, regardless of the underlying cause, and lower the risk of infection by reducing or eliminating congestion. Best approaches...
•Drink water—at least eight glasses each day. It thins mucus in the sinuses and promotes normal drainage. |
| As many as 45 million cases of sinusitis are diagnosed each year—and approximately nine times out of 10, that diagnosis is incorrect.
Sinusitis, also called a sinus infection, is a bacterial infection of the sinus linings. Infection causes the linings to swell and interferes with the normal drainage of mucus. This results in congestion, headache, reduced sense of smell and/or taste, tenderness around the eyes, cheeks, nose and/or forehead and other symptoms. |

I was stressed, had insomnia and sinusitis, and slept three hours a night. I retired from the fire department because of the accident and joined a support group.
Today I am vegetarian, organic, and juicing, and am no longer suffering with sinusitis, hypertension, or asthma. My black hair is returning, my skin is lovely, and my vision has improved. I sleep six hours a night and am calm and happy. My family has joined a food coop. My vitality and energy have zoomed up.
I work out in an adult ballet class, study flamenco, and will perform in a recital. |

A typical asthmatic will more than likely have had an early medical history of frequent colds, allergy conditions, sinusitis, hay fever, eczema, bronchial complaints, influenza and low resistance to a range of diseases. This is to be expected if asthma is linked to the immune system, as will be explained later.
Having said that, there are plenty of cases where adults have suddenly developed asthma without any prior warning. |

Likewise, if someone has accumulated toxic waste in the bent area of his ascending/transverse colon (right colic flexure), the functions of his right lung are subdued. |

The best way to prevent toothache is to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy. Try to reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks, brush your teeth regularly using a toothpaste containing fluoride, and make sure you floss as often as is practically possible. Visit your dentist regularly so that any problems that may be developing can be detected early.

Massage can be used to treat circulation problems and help high blood pressure, headaches, hyperactivity, insomnia, sinusitis and breathing problems. Nurses and physiotherapists massage patients to promote circulation to the muscles of bedridden patients and to help relieve pain or physical discomfort. Deep and intense pressure massage eases the stiffness often experienced by athletes and dancers, by draining waste products which accumulate in muscles after strenuous activity. |

Colon-related complaints include constipation, diarrhea, bloating, headaches, dizziness, nausea, sinusitis, eye and ear disorders, backaches, bad breath, body odor, sciatica, skin blemishes and diseases, abdominal gas, low energy, disorders of the nervous system, etc. A clean colon is a prerequisite for the balanced functioning of the rest of the body. Cleansing of the large intestine should, therefore, be part of every healing therapy.

Even if you don't have an allergy to cow's produce that causes asthma many other problems have been linked to cow's milk intolerance or allergy, including eczema, sinusitis, catarrh, hay fever and gastrointestinal illnesses. It is wise to reduce or limit the amount of cheese, cream and other dairy products in the diet. Adults should restrict milk to a maximum of 250 ml per day and substitute water or fruit juices for their daily fluid intake.

It is also of use to bronchitis and sinusitis sufferers, for skin problems, stress-related problems, gastric ulcers and arthritis. Poor immunity, a reduced sense of taste and smell, night blindness, and dry skin and eyes, are signs of a Vitamin A deficiency. The best food sources of Vitamin A are animal and fish livers, kidneys, dark green and orange vegetables, egg yolk and milk. Beta-carotene is found in the yellow pigment of fruits and vegetables such as carrots. |
| Stress is a huge emotional burden, so it is no surprise to find that many common stress-based disorders such as PMT, eczema, acne, psoriasis, chronic fatigue syndrome, digestive disturbances, insomnia, sinusitis, headaches, muscular aches and pains respond well to aromatherapy. Stress is also a trigger for asthma, so aromatherapy can play a part in its treatment too.

As a result, symptoms such as colds, sinusitis, ear infections, measles, chicken pox, and eczema arise. As vitality lowers, the body cannot afford the expenditure of energy required for the alternate elimination, and is forced to store toxins in its tissues. As this continues, toxins are stored in the deeper layers of the tissues where they eventually cause diseases such as arthritis, heart disease, senility, and cancer. |

In winter, nasal congestion associated with conditions such as sinusitis (p. 286) and catarrh (p. 237) can lead to puffy eyes. In the summer, if you suffer from hay fever you may get puffy eyes during the season, whereas if you are prone to allergic rhinitis it can be a year-round problem.
Occasionally, puffy eyes can be a sign of a more serious condition. If your eyelids are swollen you may have an inflammation of the eye and will need to see your doctor for a diagnosis. Puffy eyes can be linked to conditions such as conjunctivitis (p. 178) or blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids). |

| Errors in diagnosing sinusitis are a leading cause of unnecessary treatments, including the use of antibiotics and even surgery. CAUSES AND DIAGNOSIS
There are many small sinus cavities—over the eyes, along and behind the nose, above the teeth, etc. These cavities have tiny holes (ostia) that drain into the nose. Anything that interferes with normal drainage causes mucus to accumulate. This includes colds, allergies and other conditions that trigger congestion.
Many people have anatomical abnormalities, such as a deviated septum, that inhibit drainage. |

Sinusitis
I suffered from sinusitis for many years as a child, and thus I have far too much experience about what really causes it and how to prevent it. For me, the answer was quite simple— quitting dairy products. The fact is that most adults are allergic to one or more elements found in dairy products.
If you think about what your body does when it is allergic to something, it becomes obvious why so many people who drink milk suffer from chronic sinus problems, asthma or even constipation. |

If a man suffering from sinusitis leaves the doctor's office empty-handed and "merely" receives advice on how to deal with his illness in a more natural way, he may think that his doctor hasn't done his job or is irresponsible. The physician too, facing a viral infection, often prefers the comparatively "safe" option of an antibiotic to being blamed for not doing enough for the patient, particularly when the patient is a child. Otherwise, the doctor might even risk a lawsuit against him. |
