The tipping point does not require that a majority of US shoppers reject GM foods. If even a small percentage started switching brands based on GMO content, major companies would respond.
Studies show that the more people learn about GM foods the less they trust them.13 Thus, efforts to educate US shoppers about GMOs will likely drive them towards the tipping point. This has already started with rbGH.

Most apples look and feel waxy because the skin secretes a protective covering of wax; this layer serves to hold water in and keep disease out. shoppers may confuse the dusty wax coating on an unbuffed apple with chemical residue, and supermarket apples are routinely machine-rubbed to a high gloss. Plus, not all wax jobs are natural. In the 1950s it occurred to a Yakima, Washington, shipper that apples could be waxed just like cars. His mirror-finish apples brought a dollar a box more than untreated fruit, and the practice caught on. |

One of Retton's first stops on her Pfizer tour was the Cincinnati Mills Mall in Ohio, where she spoke to shoppers about "taking charge of your own success'' and about how Detrol was keeping her out of the bathroom. shoppers posed for photos with the gymnast and signed up to win a new Ford pickup truck. "I wish I hadn't waited so long to talk to my doctor," Retton said, "but I didn't realize this was a health problem that could happen to anyone, even someone my age."

Some brand names, such as Lean Cuisine and Healthy Choice, give shoppers the impression that they are low-calorie or healthier than other foods. In most cases they are only cleverly marketed processed and refined foods. Their relatively small serving sizes are often unrealistic and only whet the appetite, much like an appetizer.
Some evidence suggests that sugar-free soft drinks alter the brain's taste and appetite centers, increasing our desire for sweet foods. |

| By educating health-conscious shoppers about the dangers of GM food and providing clear choices in the store, brands without GM ingredients will have the advantage. This campaign will promote healthier eating in America and may even achieve the tipping point that inspires the whole food industry to get on board. Boycott Processed Meat Products
Adams urges all shoppers to boycott processed meat products this Christmas season, opting instead for eco-friendly, all-natural gifts such as superfoods from companies like www.Sunfood.com or www.TransitionNutrition.com or www.GoodCauseWellness.com
Adams also reminds consumers that if they give gifts made of processed meats, they are indirectly giving people an increased risk of pancreatic cancer and colon cancer. "Giving someone a gift of processed meat is actually more like a curse than a gift," Adams said. |

That's a sad state of affairs, but, to be fair, some food companies don't make it easy for shoppers. We'll give you an example. The Nutrition Facts box on Betty Crocker Original Pancake mix defines a single serving as one-third of a cup of flour. This single serving, according to the Nutrition Facts box, should make three pancakes. That seems pretty straightforward; however, the box doesn't indicate that these would be extremely small pancakes compared with the pancakes people normally eat for breakfast. |
| You'll learn more about food labels than you ever imagined.
What Do Food Labels Really Tell You?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires that virtually all packaged foods disclose their contents with a Nutrition Facts box and a list of ingredients. The intent is well meaning: to help shoppers make informed food purchases. Government agencies in many other countries have similar requirements.
We know that making sense of food labels may at first seem like trying to figure out the tiny print in a legal contract. |

In its survey of grocery shoppers, the Grocery Manufacturers Association, a food industry trade group, found that almost 50 percent of people were looking for products with reduced sugar.
Another study arrived at similar conclusions, finding that 49 percent of Americans report paying attention to sugar content when deciding which foods to eat. The Food for Life study from Yankelovich, Inc., also discovered that, on a typical day, 45 percent of Americans feel they eat too much sugar or junk food.

Leaving the store, I had the thought that I had just experienced a perfect minidramatization of an "Eastward journeys" story—but one that was designed to be primarily experienced, not by Americans or other Westerners but by modern Chinese shoppers! Here was a machine that offered the power of qi and explained the effects with a bit of talk about biomagnetic theory (very new and scientific so therefore good) and a bit of talk about channel acupuncture (very ancient and Chinese, so therefore also good). |

Large retailers use various techniques—from displays and lighting to background music—to tempt shoppers into making purchases. With a swipe of a credit card, it belongs to us.

They probably think they are just buying reams of paper for their copiers and printers. But I have to tell you a little secret: these companies are going green, too. Not only is the recycled content of their papers increasing dramatically, each of these companies is increasingly able to track sourcing for their paper products, so that they are assured that they are protecting, instead of plundering, rain forests. |

Contrast this to the everyday grocery shoppers: these are the everyday people who don’t really pay attention to nutrition. They don't make good choices. They basically pull things off the shelves that they've seen on television. They choose foods based on what they've been told to buy through promotional advertisements, public relations, and other efforts, including food lobbying.
Lobbying is how the USDA came up with the new "Food Guide Pyramid," by the way. It's pretty much the "Drink More Milk" pyramid. It was heavily influenced by the dairy industry. |
