Instead, the FDA spends the vast majority of its time approving new prescription drugs rather than protecting the public against the dangers from such drugs or personal care products like shampoos, soaps, deodorants and fragrance products.
In fact, it may surprise you to learn that manufacturers can put practically any chemical they want into shampoos, even if it is a hazardous chemical listed in the RTECS database of toxicity and even if it is considered a toxic waste chemical by the EPA. |
| Personally, I think this product is a joke because it's trying to exploit the word "herbal" to imply that the shampoo is healthy, even though it is primarily made with the same ingredients as other popular shampoos. The first three ingredients, for example, are: water, sodium laureth, and sodium lauryl sulfate. Big deal, huh? You can find the same three ingredients in 99-cent shampoo at Wal-Mart. |
| REPPED: Researchers at the National Institutes of Health have found a correlation between an ingredient found in shampoos and nervous system damage. The experiments were conducted with the brain cells of rats and they show that contact with this ingredient called methylisothiazoline, or MIT, causes neurological damage.
Which products contain this chemical compound MIT? Head and Shoulders, Suave, Clairol and Pantene Hair Conditioner all contain this ingredient. |
| There are safe shampoos, safe soaps, safe laundry detergents, dishwashing liquids and even deodorant products. You don't have to expose yourself to toxic chemicals to take care of personal hygiene, because whether you agree with it or not, these disease-causing chemicals are going to remain quite legal in the use of personal care products for many years to come. Why? You can bet that the manufacturers of these products will fight against any attempt to regulate or outlaw these toxic chemicals. That's because the chemicals are convenient for such manufacturers. |

Lindane is also used in medicinal shampoos to kill lice, available in every state except California, where lindane-based shampoos are banned. (In 1997, the Food and Drug Administration banned the use of lindane for veterinary purposes for treatment of lice on animals; for people, the agency recommends its use for patients who cannot tolerate or have failed treatment with safer medication."10
For the first time, a developing country—Mexico —was proposing the ban of a chemical that was approved for use in the land of its long-dominant, and far richer, northern neighbor. |
| The EPA's action, however, had no effect on the use of lindane shampoos, which are regulated as a pharmaceutical by the FDA, and still permitted for anti-lice shampoos.
The meeting in Montevideo sent a powerful message home of what can happen when the United States excludes itself from international environmental negotiations. Even the chemical industry began indicating its support for U.S. accession to POPS. |

Wash your hair every other day and do not use shampoos with harsh chemicals.
TIP: WASH YOUR HAIR LESS FREQUENTLY
The natural oils that protect your hair can be lost through overwashing. Depending on the weather and environmental conditions, wash your hair once every three to five days.
Dry hair can be a reaction to chemicals found in harsh shampoos or hair dyes. This type of problem can be treated by the short-term use of an appropriate homeopathic remedy, and by making healthy lifestyle changes to rectify any damage. |
| Other options are tar shampoos (DHS Tar™, Neutrogena T/Gel™, and Polytar™), which can be used three times a week for prevention, or daily for treatment.
Steroid cream: In the rare case that these shampoos are ineffective, a 2% steroid cream is prescribed to be used twice daily for 7-10 days. It is to be used in conjunction with the above shampoo treatment.
Diet: Eliminating dairy, eggs, and sometimes gluten can help prevent dandruff. |

The detergent cleansing agent is one typically seen in "no more tears" baby shampoos and it is fragrance-free. What's not mild is the problematic horsetail and comfrey extracts. Both have their share of problems for skin, but they are unlikely to be an issue in a cleanser (and in the small amounts used in this product). This is a semi-water-soluble cleanser most suitable for normal to slightly dry skin.
© $$$ Sensitive Skin Cleansing Gel ($30 for 8.5 ounces) is a standard, detergent-based water-soluble cleanser for normal to oily skin. |

For excellent scalp care, use only organic, plant-based shampoos on the hair. Sometimes I simply use a dilute solution of lemon or orange juice as shampoo; I also occasionally use jojoba or sweet almond oil to maintain scalp and hair moisture and to avoid hair knots. Commercial shampoos and conditioners contain highly toxic chemicals and damage the scalp over time.

| Dry hair can be a reaction to chemicals found in harsh shampoos or hair dyes. This type of problem can be treated by the short-term use of an appropriate homeopathic remedy, and by making healthy lifestyle changes to rectify any damage. However, the condition of your hair can act as a
^ basic barometer for your health, and dry hair can point to a larger problem. If this is the case, dry hair is best dealt with by a homeopathic practitioner, who will prescribe treatments in an effort to balance the whole system. |
| Many over-the-counter shampoos designed to treat head lice contain pyrethrins as the active component. However, do not ingest or inhale these compounds, and avoid them altogether if your child has asthma or is allergic to plants such as marigolds, daisies, and ragweed. Consult a medical herbalist before this treatment.
NAIL PROBLEMS

They come from cars and factories, they're in our foods and shampoos, and they're in our homes and offices. All of these potentially toxic substances act as pollution to our biological city (see Figure E.l). Some of the toxins we may encounter have their own warning systems so we know not to ingest them or use them (you know by the smell of bleach or gasoline that you're not going to be serving either in a wine goblet). But many of today's toxins are odorless and colorless, so you may not have such an overt warning. In a way, what we lack in minerals, we make up in heavy metals. |

The Not Too Pretty report found phthalates in 72% of personal care products, including fragrance-containing shampoos, deodorants and hair gels. None of the products listed phthalates on the label.16
• Sensitizers. One in every 50 people may suffer immune system damage from fragrance and become sensitized, according to the EU's
Scientific Committee on Cosmetic Products and Non-food Products.17 Once sensitized to an ingredient, a person can remain so for a lifetime, enduring allergic reactions with every subsequent exposure. |

Ethylene oxide can strip out the eye-burning chemicals from children's shampoos by adding some of its oxygen to the stew that makes soap bubbly. At the point where the reaction happens, ethylene oxide takes on a twin and becomes di-ethylene oxide—literally two paired ethylene oxides. Another name for this compound is 1,4-dioxane. This is a chemical known to the state of California, the U.S. government, and the World Health Organization to cause cancer in male and female rats and mice. The European Union bans it from personal care products. |

Besides being used as an herb in flavorful dishes, rosemary is also used in cosmetics, disinfectants, shampoos, herbal medicine, and as a potpourri. The oil of rosemary is formed either from distilled flowering tops or from the stems and leaves. About 100 pounds of flowering tops yields about eight ounces of oil.

There are now shampoos and body lotions labeled 70% organic based on the fact that their main ingredient is ... water in which something organic, such as an organic lavender leaf, has been soaked."
It takes only a quick look at the ingredients list on a cosmetic to notice that there are a lot of words that are completely unrelated to anything resembling a plant, much less a plant that can be labeled "organic." Plenty of synthetic ingredients are found in products of cosmetics lines that boast about their all "natural" and now "organic" content. |

Two months later, the revised warning tells families that some shampoos can contain levels of 1,4-dioxane at concentrations higher than the FDA-recommended levels—according to recommendations that don't, apparently, exist—and that these levels cannot be determined without testing. Families are therefore urged to ask manufacturers to prove that their products are free of 1,4-dioxane. |
| The agency responsible for advising the public of environmental hazards, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), pulled the compound's toxicological profile from its website after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) asked it to issue a correction: there was no official FDA-advised level for this cancer-causing ingredient in shampoos and bubble baths.
A revised posting on the toxicological profile of 1,4-dioxane appeared in April 2007. The explanation of the FDA reads like a spoof dreamed up by a geeky Monty Python. |

He paid for private tests on baby shampoos and soaps in 2006 and found what Yelena had feared. The European Union recalled some children's bath products because they were found to contain 1,4-dioxane. European manufacturers had known for some time why 1,4-dioxane forms and also how to get rid of it cheaply. Until now, American manufacturers haven't needed to do so.
People like my son and daughter-in-law have assumed that products they buy to bathe my young grandchildren in would be especially safe. Like me, they were shocked to find that this was not the case. |

Over the last several decades, the chemical industry has fudged its science and applied tremendous political pressure to try to prevent the public from learning the truth about the hazards of chemicals used in antibacterial soaps, cosmetics, skin creams, shampoos, home cleaning products and many other similar items. Thanks to the internet, the truth about the toxicity of these synthetic chemicals is finally starting to emerge. A fascinating new book on this subject is called The Secret History of the War on Cancer by Devra Davis. |

One such ingredient called MIT was recently discovered in most brand-name shampoos, and this MIT ingredient is known to cause brain cancer.
Voluntary chemical suicide
So now we are really stupid as a species, because we've poisoned our mouths, our water supply, our food, our beverages and even our shampoos and personal care products. And if you use dryer sheets, then you've got your clothes poisoned as well, they're coated in a layer of toxic chemicals found in dryer sheet products. So what else could we use to poison the population? There are still many other options. |
