Some 43% of women suffer with sexual dysfunction, compared to 31% of men, according to University of Chicago researcher Dr. Edward Laumann.5
Some $2 to $3 billion will be spent within the next ten years on products aimed at improving the sex lives of these women. Female sexual dysfunction is characterized by a lack of desire, arousal and orgasm. Lack of desire is the chief complaint among women, affecting about one-third of them at some point in their lives, says Cindy Meston, assistant professor of clinical psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. |

Extract of ginkgo appears to be remarkably effective in reversing antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction in women as well as men.78 Although the sexual dysfunction in this study was drug-induced rather than the result of changing hormones, I recommend trying this safe and simple approach.

The use of the carnitines in treating sexual dysfunction is getting more and more popular. For example, recent research suggests that acetyl-L-carnitine helps improve depression, fatigue, and sexual dysfunction that most men experience with aging. This is what physicians call andropause. In a 2004 study, Italian researchers used a randomized clinical trial to determine if acetyl-L-carnitine and propionyl-L-carnitine could improve andropause symptoms in aging men. |

Sexual Dysfunction
A randomized and placebo-controlled trial of Ginkgo biloba 240 mg daily failed to demonstrate any significant difference in effectiveness between the herb and placebo in people with sexual dysfunction resulting from the use of antidepressant medications. The 12-week study involved 24 individuals with this problem, and analysis was done on 8 males and 5 females on placebo and 6 males and 5 females on Ginkgo. Some notable individual responses were recorded in both groups, but no significant differences in effectiveness or side effects were found. |

?Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults aged twenty to seventy-four.
?People with diabetes are nearly twice as likely to get glaucoma as other adults.
?Diabetes patients are twice as likely to get cataracts as people without diabetes. Cataracts also develop at an earlier age among people who have diabetes.
?Skin and urinary tract infections are more common among men and women who have diabetes.

Because men with Klinefelter's tend to have abnormally low levels of testosterone and high levels of estrogen, they often suffer from infertility and sexual dysfunction.

If one has a surgical menopause, the plasma levels of testosterone are decreased significantly more than in women in natural menopause,27 and this can result in an even greater incidence of sexual dysfunction than in women who went through a natural physiologic menopause.
Acne, Facial Hair, and Hair Loss. Many peri- and postmenopausal women have problems related to the change in the ratio of estrogen to testosterone. Even though both hormones have declined, there is a relative increase in testosterone because there is less estrogen to block its effects. |

Removing phthalates from children's toys, the scientists told the panel, would make for one less contaminant amid multiple exposures to phthalates and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals through infancy and into adulthood; it would reduce at least one possible contributor to rising endocrine-related troubles, and sexual dysfunction levels, in American men. The argument is similar concerning cosmetics: one chemical in one product may have minimal effect, but at a time when humans are exposed to chemicals of every description, quantities rise from multiple sources. |

The main problem with the tricyclics is their anticholinergic side effects: dry mouth, constipation, memory problems, confusion, blurred vision, sexual dysfunction, and decreased urination. Other problems include heart arrhythmias and blood pressure drops. Elavil is associated with the worst of these problems and probably shouldn't be used.
The anticholinergic side effects of the tricyclics are especially bad for the elderly, who are more susceptible to the memory-impairing effects of these medications. |

| The drug sildenafil (Viagra), introduced in 1998, revolutionized the treatment of sexual dysfunction. However, it and related drugs, such as vardenafil(Levitra) and tadalafil (Cialis), have significant limitations.
Although these impotence medications work well to promote blood flow to the penis, they have little or no effect on libido or sexual sensation in men—or in women. |
| Treatment: Among women who have sexual dysfunction due to low androgens, treatment using low-dose testosterone or low-dose DHEA significantly increases sex drive—approximately 70% of the time. Although the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet approved testosterone supplements for use in women, many doctors are prescribing them anyway.
Warning: Unnecessary supplementation can lead to excessive androgen levels, resulting in heavier pubic hair growth, clitoral enlargement, acne, increased facial hair growth, lowered voice, and reduced levels of HDL ("good") cholesterol. |

If a medication causes weight gain, induces sexual dysfunction, and throws the body out of rhythm, it can hardly be considered a proper solution for the cause of PMS. The short-term symptom suppression does not address the cause of the problem, and may in fact make the cause of the problem worse. |

In one trial saw palmetto extract produced positive results similar to the drugs, but without the sexual dysfunction that accompanied the drug use. Permixon is manufactured in Europe and not yet available in the U.S., but there are other supplements available here that are just as effective. Look for prostate products that contain Beta-sitosterol, such as "Prostate Care" by Healthy Choice Nutritionals, which is even more powerful than Saw Palmetto. | Sex Problems Plague Many with Hypoglycemia
Hypoglycemics also cope with an increase in sexual dysfunction. In fact, most books about low blood sugar cite "impotence" and "lack of sex drive" as common symptoms. One study of thousands of hypoglycemics conducted by Stephen Gyland, M.D., whose work is discussed in chapter 13, found that 44 percent of female hypoglycemics lose their libido and 29 percent of males have impotency problems.
"Women who are hypoglycemic could have an inability to have an orgasm," says Richard Ash, M.D. |
| Actually, it's well known among physicians and sufferers themselves that both men and women with diabetes have a much greater chance than healthy people of developing sexual dysfunction. It's been extensively documented that diabetic men have a higher-than-normal risk of developing erectile dysfunction (ED).
In fact, diabetes is one of the greatest risk factors for ED, which is the inability to attain or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. |
| So if eating excess sugar is one of the many factors that can lead to diabetes (and this seems to be a possibility in people who have a family history of diabetes), then sugar may be implicated in sexual dysfunction, albeit in a roundabout way."
Doesn't Sugar Sometimes Increase Libido Rather Than Decrease It? Only Briefly.

In other words, such tumors may be there, but do nothing that would reduce life expectancy. How does one know if his tumor is indolent or aggressive? How does one make what could be life or death decisions? |
