EAT EXTREME GREENS
There are those who love the taste and texture of seaweed, but I'm not one of them. However, I'm so convinced of the power of algae and seaweed that I now supplement my diet with capsules and tablets of Klamath Lake blue green algae, spirulina, chlorella, and red and brown marine algae, and other green supplements.
But for those who do like their flavor, go for it! Whether you call them seaweed or sea vegetables, these greens (actually, they come in an array of greens as well as red, black, and brown) are wonderfully easy to prepare. |

Though tests indicate that seaweeds are abundant in vitamin B12, don't believe it. According to Paul Pitchford, much of what shows up in tests as B12 is actually a B12 "analogue" that is not an effective form of the vitamin. Despite all the other wonderful things they provide, seaweeds are not a viable B12 source.

Women in Japan commonly consume seaweed, known for its iodine content. seaweed is reported to reduce the risk for breast cancer. [Japanese Journal Cancer Research 92: 483-87, 2001]
In one study, thyroid disease incidence was higher in breast cancer patients than in healthy women (58% versus 18%). But other studies do not confirm that abnormal thyroid hormone levels are associated with breast cancer. [Nutrition Cancer 27: 48-52, 1997] It may be that an increased ratio of thyroid hormone over estrogen sets up a growth-promoting effect on breast tumors. |

If you're eating seaweed, that's not a problem for your health; in fact seaweed is very good for you and it's now shown to actually prevent and even help treat cancer. But if you take MSG out of seaweed or you synthesize MSG and put it into a highly concentrated form, then it functions as a neurotoxin -- that's why it's called an excitotoxin by Dr. Russell Blaylock, who is perhaps the world's foremost authority on MSG and other excitotoxins such as aspartame.

The high consumption of iodine-rich seaweed (25 times more than in Western countries) has been associated with the low incidence of benign and cancer breast disease in Japanese women. In animal and human studies, molecular iodine supplementation exerts a suppressive effect on the development and size of both benign and cancerous growths. EPA is also found in seaweed, with up to 30 percent of the fat in some varieties being EPA. (Seaweed has little DHA.) However, seaweed is so low in fat that you'd need to eat a lot of it to make a significant contribution to your intake. One hefty serving of 100 grams of seaweed provides about 100 mg of EPA.
DHA is also found in microalgae (microscopic sea plants), some of which contain as much as 40 percent DHA by dry weight. While we don't eat microalgae, it is currently being cultivated, extracted, and sold as a DHA supplement with 100 to 300 mg DHA per capsule. |

Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills
If MSG is found in seaweed, why is it so dangerous to your health?
The demonstrated toxicity of MSG was, at first, difficult to explain. Glutamates are naturally occurring proteins in foods like beets, tomatoes and seaweed, so what was the problem? The problem, it turns out, was that MSG was a highly concentrated chemical form extracted from plants. Nowhere in nature did MSG exist in isolation and in such high concentrations.
It might appear that MSG should not be a problem. After all, it is found naturally in foods such as soybeans, beets, and seaweeds. |
