| Natural salts (such as "sea salt") are now being marketed as a replacement to table salt but most of these salts are also partially refined. On the other hand, Himalayan Salt or Celtic Sea Salt are living substances, produced with ancient drying methods, and contain the vital minerals we need. Our body fluids closely resemble the structure of seawater, so these salts are quite beneficial for balancing internal fluids. I personally recommend Himalayan Crystal Salt™ because it contains all the elements and minerals your body needs without any of the toxins found in common table salt.

We're talking about sea salts. This is a hot item right now. What's special about your brand?
Heine: Table salts and sea salts of the world typically have bleaching agents, anti-caking agents, leaching agents and other processing agents used in producing the product. Typically, the product goes under a tremendous amount of stress and all the trace minerals that are present in sea salt have been stripped out, which is why the other salts have such a white, uniform appearance. They're just manufactured products, really. |

Due to a unique method of harvesting from ocean water (on the northwestern coast of France), along with gathering the naturally evaporated salt using wooden tools, it also contains up to eighty-two trace minerals not found in other sea salts. Another other excellent whole salt is Himalayan salt. Both salts are in their ionic form.
Common table salt, which I do not recommend, lacks minerals and trace elements because it is purified and refined, leaving only sodium and chloride. |

By processed salt, I mean common table salts, or sodium chloride. These are extremely unhealthy salts because they lack the full spectrum of minerals found in natural salts. The only salt I recommend is either sea salt—such as Celtic sea salt—or salt mined from salt caves, such as Royal Himalayan salt. You can find that at www.TransitionNutrition.com. When you stop consuming processed salt and start consuming full spectrum salt—that is, sea salt or the cave salt—then you will not only boost your mineralization, you will also tend to notice a marked improvement in your blood pressure. |

That's the reason these salts may have a little bit of an off color; they maintain their trace minerals.
These products are broken down into their specific crystal size. They're washed in brine taken from the ocean the salts came from; this keeps the trace-mineral aspect present. They are very healthy for you. The magnesium and potassium levels in this product are higher than what's found in processed salts. Some say that it adds to the flavor. Another feature is that these products taste differently according to the region they came from. |

Among the most damaging personal care products are those that are scented, including cologne, deodorants, lotions, creams, bath salts, shampoo, cosmetics, soaps, body powders, and oils. Scented products can contain up to 5,000 different chemicals in various combinations, the vast majority of which have had little or no human toxicology testing.
Cosmetics contain not only fragrances (with all their component chemicals) but also metal salts. Mascara and eyeliners may contain lead or coal tar dyes, which are also found in hair dyes. |

Eucalyptus Detox Bath
1 cup sea salt
2 cups baking soda
1 cup Epsom salts
2 tablespoons glycerin per bath
15 drops eucalyptus essential oil
Combine sea salt, baking soda, and Epsom salts in a bowl. Stir to blend. Pour 1/4 cup or so into a running bath. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of glycerin and 10 to 15 drops of eucalyptus oil. Store the remainder in a glass jar. Keep in a cool, dry place and use within two weeks.
Dry Skin Brushing
In addition to saunas and detox baths, toxins may be eliminated from the skin by brushing it with a special natural-bristle skin brush. |

Common table salt, which I do not recommend, lacks minerals and trace elements because it is purified and refined, leaving only sodium and chloride. After refining, common table salt is mixed with iodine, bleaching agents, and anti-caking agents, which creates a pure white, free-flowing product. Even many salts labeled "sea salt" are washed or boiled, which removes minerals and trace elements, rendering them toxic to the human body. |

One is Epsom salts, which contains magnesium to relax muscles and sulfur to aid in detoxification and help increase blood supply to the skin. A quarter of a cup of salts is a good start with a gradual increase to as much as two to four pounds per bath. My eucalyptus detox bath is a favorite. A recipe for this soak follows on page 122.
Another option is gingerroot. Ginger helps the body to sweat, so toxins are drawn to the skin's surface. To prepare the ginger bath, place half-inch slices of fresh ginger in boiling water over a stove; turn off the heat, and steep for thirty minutes. |

Bile salts Deficiency and Treatment
The clinical signs that might suggest a deficiency of bile salts include intolerance to fatty foods, indigestion, physical evidence of fat-soluble nutrient deficiency (described previously) and stools that are light in color or that float. Of course, each of these signs may be present for other reasons, so it is not always obvious when someone needs to supplement with bile salts. On the other hand, some patients have been able to determine that they need another course of bile-salt therapy by the reappearance of yellowish or floating stools. |

Adding epsom salts (magnesium sulphate) and a teaspoon of eucalyptus oil or appropriate essential oil (see pages 141-6) to a warm bath provides your body with much needed minerals and helps drive off colds and chills. Fifteen minutes soaking in the enriched water is about all you need to relax and soothe you all over. Likewise, soaking your feet in a foot bath with epsom salts added, followed by a foot massage, is a wonderfully relaxing experience. Or there is the latest in luxury appliances to help you feel good—mini spa baths for the feet! |
| Dr Schuessler developed these mineral salts in an easily assimilated form. The amount of minerals in the tissue salts is in fact tiny, much smaller than would generally be given as a supplement, but the purpose of them is not to make up for dietary deficiencies but to arouse the body to heal itself. They are therefore a kind of homeopathic remedy, and are prescribed on the same principles.
The Schuessler minerals most commonly used in the treatment of asthma are potassium phosphate (kali phos), potassium chloride (kali mur), magnesium phosphate (mag phos) and sodium chloride (nat mur). |

California's soils were rich in sodium sulfate and sodium carbonate, whereas seawater was enriched in sodium chloride. The salts in the soil were weathering out of rocks, dissolving in soil water, and then teptecipitating where the water evaporated. He teasoned that drier areas had saltier soil because rain sank into the ground and evapotated in the soil. So just as greater rainfall leached rhe alkali from the soil, repeated flooding could flush salts from the ground.
Collaborating with farmers eager to improve their land, Hilgard also advocated mulching to reduce evaporation of soil moisrure. |

| Electrolytes
An electrolyte solution can be formed when certain mineral salts are dissolved in water. Electrolyte solutions were originally named because of their ability to conduct electricity. Many of the fluids in the body are electrolyte solutions with dissolved minerals. For example, table salt (sodium chloride) can easily dissolve in water to form an electrolyte solution. There are three important areas of the body that contain electrolytes in solution.
Blood plasma is the liquid component of blood. Blood cells are suspended in plasma. |

While castor oil is not recommended to replace Epsom salts or magnesium citrate during the liver cleanse, in case of an allergy to the above, castor oil may be used as a substitute.
Four Major Rectal Enema Treatments
Enema treatments involve introduction of liquids into the rectum for the purpose of cleansing and nourishment (see illustration 18). Since the colon is the seat of Vata, an enema has an immediate effect on all the functions of Vata. |
| The mineral salts in the deodorant stone don't block perspiration, they mainly just cover ordor.
Tips to effectively deal with body odor:
• Pitta and Pitta-Vata types are the most prone to develop body odor. Follow the Ayurvedic regimen and cleansing procedures. Remove all gallstones from your liver and cleanse your kidneys. Avoid too many acid-forming foods such animal proteins, fats and starches. The more refined and processed the foods are, the more likely the skin will have to eliminate toxic waste. The digestion of toxins by skin bacteria causes an unpleasant smell of skin. |
| In the presence of toxic substances and due to the lack of bile salts resulting from poor digestion, some of the excessive cholesterol forms intrahepatic stones, so-called because they are produced inside the liver. These stones decrease bile flow and further reduce the body's ability to digest protein and fat-containing foods. As a result, every meal that contains cholesterol, a natural constituent of numerous foods, adds more of the "bad" cholesterol to the quantity already trapped in the bloodstream. |
| The hair and nails remove proteins, excessive mineral salts, pigments and oil.
• The skin, being the second largest organ of elimination, eliminates sweat, and yes, 40-60 percent of all the waste in the body.
• The lymphatic system, which has to continuously circulate and purify the 18 liters (19 quarts) of waste-loaded lymph fluid contained in the body, plays a major role in the detoxification process.
All of this activity, of course, requires copious quantities of water. |

2 sume adequate amounts of fresh seasonal fruit (preferably organic or
* locally grown) during the elimination cycle. Not only does this supply the body with living matter to draw out unwanted substances, it also ensures the colon remains well hydrated and nourished. Fresh raw fruit provides the ideal ingredients for supporting the body's Elimination Cycle.

There are different "versions" (called salts) of glucosamine, including glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride, and glucosamine hydroiodide. (Glucosamine hydrochloride actually provides more glucosamine than the glucosamine sulfate, but this may not matter if your supplement is standardized for the amount of glucosamine it contains.)
Most studies have used glucosamine sulfate, so unless you're allergic to sulfates, that's probably your safest bet. |

The situation is different with regard to the gallbladder, where up to about 20 percent of all stones can be made up entirely of minerals, predominantly calcium salts and bile pigments. Whereas diagnostic tests can easily detect these hardened, relatively large stones in the gallbladder, they tend to miss the softer, noncalcified stones in the liver. Only when excessive amounts of cholesterol-based stones (85-95 percent cholesterol), or other clumps of fat, block the bile ducts of the liver may an ultrasound test reveal what is generally referred to as "fatty liver. |

Bile Salts
Bile salts are secreted by the liver and stored in the gallbladder. They play an important role in the digestion and assimilation of fats. Individuals with weak liver function or those who have had their gallbladder removed sometimes benefit from taking a bile-salt supplement. One of us (J.W.) saw a woman in her late 30s who had a history of recurrent ulceration of the cornea of both eyes. She discovered that she needed to take 100,000 IU of vitamin A per day in order to prevent this problem from recurring. |

Phosphates are the salts of phosphorus. Phosphates are made up of a central phosphorus atom surrounded by four oxygen atoms (P04), as shown in Figure 10-1.
The main use for phosphorus is strengthening bones. Phosphorus and calcium form a salt called hydroxyapatite that provides the compressional strength of bones.
