However, it all depends on whether you are eating ocean-caught salmon or farmed salmon. The vast majority of salmon sold in this country comes from salmon farms. The most common is Atlantic salmon plopped into the Pacific Ocean in farms near Seattle, Washington. An eight-ounce slice of farmed salmon has twenty-one grams of fat, compared to only fourteen grams in ocean-caught salmon. The extra fat is not the healthy omega-3 fatty acid-enriched fish oils, but rather the omega-6 fatty acids from the grains and other feed these fish get from automated feeders. |

You can go online and order salmon Essentials at AstaFactor.com, or you may be able to find it in health food stores. If you can't find it locally, ask your local health food store to stock it. It's an excellent product; I think it's one that should be part of your daily regimen of nutritional supplements.
Be sure to work with a qualified health practitioner before taking any supplement, by the way. One of the side effects of salmon oil is a reduction in the "stickiness" of your blood cells. That makes your blood flow more smoothly, but it also "thins" the blood at the same time. |
| I have not been paid to review this product, and I receive no financial compensation if you purchase it. salmon Essentials is a product that I simply believe offers outstanding health benefits, and I'm offering you my own personal opinion of what it can do for human health.
Do I take this product? Yes, absolutely I do. I've been taking it for several months, and I plan to continue taking it, but I also take a lot of other healthy oils, and a lot of other nutritional supplements. |
| Omega-3 rich salmon oil has been in the press quite frequently, so you've probably already read about some of its many health benefits. If you're not getting some form of omega-3 oil into your diet, you are putting yourself at unnecessary risk for heart disease. The American Heart Association recommends that people eat fatty or oily fish several times a week, as well as 2 to 4 grams of EPA or DHA oils per day to lower their total triglycerides. |

It comes from a powerful antioxidant called astaxanl which just happens to be present in one of the things wild salmon eat: krill. (Farmed salmon don't eat krill, so they get their red color from astaxanthin supplements that may or may not be artificial—plus a nice dose of artificial color chosen from a Salmo-Farm color wheel. But don't get me started.) So what exactly are krill and why do we care?
Krill are little crustaceans that look like shrimp and provide food for everything from salmon to blue whales. And they're one of the most nutritious creatures in the sea. |

Place salmon on broiler pan sprayed with vegetable oil where you will be placing the salmon. Broil on one side for about 8 minutes. Flip. Spread the teriyaki sauce on the top of salmon. Bake another 8 minutes or until done. You might have to move the fish to a lower shelf so the top doesn't burn. If you are broiling halibut or a less oily fish, you can put foil on the broiling pan to save on clean up time.
If you don't have access to fresh fish: salmon Cakes 1 can (14.75 oz) salmon 1 cup dry oatmeal cereal
2 eggs
1/2 Tbs. lemon juice 2 tsp. minced parsley
1 tsp. onion powder
Drain salmon. |

This salmon Essentials astaxanthin product can help you get more healthy sun exposure by giving you a potent antioxidant that acts as an internal sunscreen, but don't run out into the sun after popping a couple of these pills, thinking that you're immune to sunburn now. It can actually take some time to build up the antioxidant level in your tissues. In my experience, it takes 30 days of intense nutritional supplementation to raise the antioxidant levels in your tissues.
By the way, just to make sure you're using common sense on this, I encourage you to read Dr. |
| Since the FDA has not approved salmon Essentials -- or any nutritional supplement -- as a drug, the Mera company cannot make these kinds of claims on the product. On the other hand, I can tell you these things out of my own experience and opinion, and with the understanding that my review of this product has no ties whatsoever to the Mera Pharmaceuticals company. I have not been paid to review this product, and I receive no financial compensation if you purchase it. |

So if the label on that vitamin bottle says "salmon oil," and you take out a soft gel and look at it, you would think it's filled with salmon oil, right? This is what most people think. This is common sense. But in fact, it is incorrect.
You might be amazed to learn this, but that soft gel may not be filled with salmon oil at all; it may have a miniscule amount of salmon oil in it, but the rest of it is just filler. It could be soybean oil, hydrogenated oils or some other form of filler. |

They're more likely to tell me, "Don't bother with that salmon oil, we have DRUGS that are better!" But then again, that's my own personal approach, and unless you're trained in nutrition, you're probably better off seeking professional advice.
Pharmaceuticals vs. nutritional supplements
You may wonder about the name, "Mera Pharmaceuticals." This is a company that could have gone either way in terms of providing medicinal substances to the market. |

The omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are found in high concentrations in fatty, carnivorous fish such as herring, mackerel, tuna, and salmon. (Smaller amounts are found in other fish.) In countries where more fish is consumed, there is a lower rate of depression. Omega-3 fish oils can elevate your mood. Besides their use for depression, studies have shown that fish oil is helpful for bipolar disorder, as well. To ensure that you get enough of the essential omega-3s, eat fish (salmon, sardines, tuna, mackerel, cod) two to three times a week. |

For me, it was salmon. Yep, my mom had made a beautiful salmon dinner, but because I ate it during one of my more memorable childhood sicknesses, I never wanted to see that pink-colored fish again.
It wasn't until I was in my late 20s that I had the courage to once again try some salmon. I expected to become instantly ill, as I had when I was 7 or 8 years old. Boy, was I shocked to find out that I loved the taste of salmon! It didn't nauseate me; it brought me pleasure! Today, salmon is one of my favorite foods.
Psychologists call this type of experience "one-trial learning. |

The best foods to get your essential fatty acids from are fish such as salmon, sardines, and anchovies as well as some plant oils such as flax oil.
There are three types of omega-3. The two you may be most familiar with are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which are found primarily in oily coldwater fish such as tuna, salmon, and mackerel. Other than fresh-picked seaweed, which is not a staple of the American diet, plant foods rarely contain EPA or DHA. |

What about cod liver oil or salmon oil? What if we all paid tax in salmon? That would be great because then Washington would have to figure out what to do with all this salmon or all of this cod liver oil. What if we paid tax with vitamins and minerals and nutrition? What would happen then? Wow. We'd have this whole country with a surplus of healing nutrients and Washington would have no choice but to hand them out to everyone, free of charge.
But wait a minute! How would our government get anything done if it ran on flax instead of dollars? Are you kidding me? |

You don't have to wait for the good news about salmon oil and how it enhances cardiovascular health in order to eat salmon. You could have been eating salmon 10 years before this evidence came out, and you would still get the benefits, even though the science wasn't there yet.
And there are all sorts of things that the science isn't available on yet. Some of these include seaweed extracts. Sea vegetables have potent anti-cancer properties. There's one called fucoidan which is extracted from marine plants and seaweeds, and I think it will someday be proven as a very strong anti-cancer agent. |

And although higher temperatures will open up new agricultural opportunities in Canada, traditional food sources - from sugar maples to salmon -will lose out in a two-degree world. Fish populations will also suffer on both sides of the Atlantic: whilst salmon populations will diminish in Canada, North Sea cod will be virtually wiped out because of warming waters unless a total ban on fishing is introduced.
In the unemotional lottery of global warming, whether you eat will depend on where you live. |
| As an Associated Press reporter put it: 'Where spawning Chinook salmon once ran thick, lizards and tumbleweed inhabit a riverbed that often goes for years without water.' Instead of sustaining salmon, the river now sustains oranges: 80 per cent of America's eating oranges are grown in the state. With major cities like Los Angeles and Sacramento all dependent on a network of canals and pipelines for their water, the hydrology of California is more like a giant plumbing system than a set of natural river valleys. |

Wild salmon, North Atlantic mackerel, sardines, flounder, sole, scallops, shrimp, pollack, red snapper, and tilapia are best because they all have a low mercury content. Avoid farmed salmon, which has a high PCB content, and high-mercury fish such as king mackerel, marlin, orange roughy, shark, swordfish, tilefish, and tuna. Essential fatty acids are also available in omega-3 rich eggs and flaxseed, as well as in supplement form. A growing number of studies show omega-3 to be beneficial in the prevention and management of Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and rheumatoid arthritis. |

Scientists now say that salmon, for example— long considered to be one of the safest of all fish—should be eaten only once per month. We are exposed to numerous other sources of indoor and outdoor pollution almost all the time, not to mention the chemicals contained in most foods today. Our immune system simply cannot afford such high concentrations of toxins as found in fish without developing a toxemia situation.
Specifically, tests on farmed salmon uncovered high levels of toxins linked to cancer and birth defects. |

Another important aspect to getting the right type of oils in your diet is to eat fish rich in the omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, mackerel, herring, and halibut. While we are encouraging you to eat more fish, we need to give you some guidelines. Nearly all fish contain trace amounts of methyl mercury. In most cases, this is of little concern because the level is so low. The fish most likely to have the lowest level of methyl mercury are salmon (usually undetectable levels), cod, mackerel, cold-water tuna, farm-raised catfish, and herring. |

Sear tuna or salmon and serve it rare. When dining in a Japanese restaurant, order sashimi, not sushi. If you have a fishmonger who sells sushi-grade fish, you can make your own sashimi. Gravlax, the raw cured salmon Scandinavian delicacy, is another gourmet choice. Enjoy beef or lamb carpaccio on a bed of arugula leaves. How about steak tartare? Numerous cuisines developed such delicacies in the days before refrigeration. Do use a quality butcher and fishmonger, and make sure that they understand you are planning to eat their products raw. Don't, however, risk consuming raw poultry or pork. |
