Action item: Demand retractions from the media
Today, NewsTarget is encouraging readers to contact major media outlets (contact information below) and demand a retraction and correction of their reporting on this particular antioxidant study. Media outlets need to check their facts before printing pro-pharma propaganda, and apparently there was little or no fact-checking conducted on this particular story. |

When you read NewsTarget on a regular basis, you join an elite group of world citizens who are among the healthiest, smartest and best-informed consumers in the world. You've probably already noticed this yourself. In social situations, aren't YOU the person who usually knows the best information about nutrition, health and pharmaceuticals? Sure enough. That's because you, like me, enjoy being well informed about issues that matter.
Most NewsTarget readers, by the way, don't agree with 100% of what's published here, and that's great, because it means they're critical thinkers. |
| Good people attract good people
That says a lot about the people who read NewsTarget, and the nature of NewsTarget itself. As you know, it's very difficult to determine who you can trust these days, especially when it comes to health product reviews and recommendations. I hate to say it, but many of the popular health magazines you read out there contain little more than watered-down articles designed to please advertisers, many of whom are selling junk products labeled as "organic" or "natural. |

Once again, I remind readers to read between the lines. At its inception, the Reagan-Udall Foundation may, indeed, not pursue the licensing of drugs, but its activities will inevitably expand into areas not covered in the original language of the law. It is naive to believe that any governmental organization will simply halt when it reaches the boundary of whatever power has been granted to it. All governments and government organizations seek to expand their power. It is a natural law of bureaucracy.

Friends, we've all got to operate as critical thinkers today. You can't just take these documents at face value and think the FDA is going to abide by the letter of the law. It's important to ask youself, Where is the FDA going with this? Why did they go to the trouble to float this document?
Think about where this is heading. Why would they spell out the example of regulating vegetable juice if they didn't plan to someday enforce such regulatory ideas? The FDA has already proven it is the enemy of health freedom. |

Click here to read these details about the AMA.
The AMA's medical journal, JAMA, remains largely funded by drug company interests. Thus, it is no surprise that the AMA's spin on this recent antioxidant study seemed designed to make vitamins look useless, thereby dissuading consumers from taking substances that ultimately compete with pharmaceuticals.
This behavior by the AMA is not unusual, nor unanticipated. What's shocking in all this is just how blindly the mainstream media swallowed the AMA's opinion on the facts of the study. |

It's also the people who read Ronnie Cummin's work over at the Organic Consumers Association (www.OrganicConsumers.org) or who devour the outstanding research projects at the Environmental Working Group (www.EWG.org). There's excellent work being done at Commercial Alert (www.CommercialAlert.org) and the Center for Science in the Public Interest (www.CSPInet.org). I'm sure there are many more that deserve to be listed here, too. |
| But today, the rest of the world is beginning to adopt the healthful living strategies pioneered by the kind of people who read NewsTarget. We don't take credit for it: we're merely one branch in a huge wave of positive transformation that started decades ago with the nutrition, organics and green living movements. But we're sure happy to be along for the ride and making a difference today!
Suddenly, being "green" is popular. Huge corporations like Wal-Mart, GM and Costco are going green. |

It seems as if nobody at Fox News, ABC News, Reuters, CNN and other media outlets even bothered to read the actual study beyond the abstract summary.
The mainstream media has failed the American people yet again. Rather than investigating the story and printing the truth, they have simply repeated misleading information put out by an organization with an obvious pro-pharma agenda. Some might say these media outlets know exactly what they're doing: They, too, earn billions of dollars each year from drug company advertisements. |

Though not all doctors appreciate their patients bringing information to them (since it takes precious time to read it), I welcome my patients bringing newspaper or magazine clippings. In fact, sometimes their information enables me to do a little research and learn something I otherwise wouldn't have known. Usually, I spend my time correcting the hype from the media that makes its way into our mainstream publications, but sometimes I am handed an article that gives me insight into what a patient's deep-seated concerns or values might be.
Knowledge seeking need not be a solitary activity. |
| Is there hope that my case will be milder than what I read about in the mainstream press?
?Can you imagine a future in which you'll no longer use the term "AD"?
•Can we try a different approach? I'm not comfortable with that label, and I'd like to talk about how we might approach my situation differently.
If your doctor is unable to carry out the type of dialogue that you need, you should consider finding another professional who will be more sympathetic to your perspective. |
| As I've said, any headline promising a miracle cure for Alzheimer's must be read as an exaggeration, and an irresponsible one at that. It is unlikely that there will ever be a panacea for brain aging, and baby boomers should not rely on extraordinary advancements being made in their lifetimes, despite the promises of the AD empire that make their way into our headlines. Our attention must begin shifting from mythical cure to hard-earned prevention, from expecting a symptomatic treatment for AD to choosing behaviors that may delay the effects of cognitive decline over the course of our lives. |

When confronted on specific issues, advocates sometimes invoke the names of one or more scientific or governmental organizations, claiming that they have thoroughly evaluated GM foods and found them safe. The implication is that others with more knowledge have already looked at this and found no problem, so you don't have to.

This nation no longer has any desire to keep its people informed, educated or healthy. The effort now is to keep people disinformed, ignorant and diseased. This is accomplished precisely through actions like this antioxidant study in which researchers pretending to conduct science send fabricated stories to a press pretending to report the news. |

Tacrine is the only one of the four cholinesterase inhibitors not used much today because it has to be administered four times a day and was shown to cause liver inflammation in many people.
For the other currently available cholinesterase inhibitors, there are two primary questions of relevance:
1. Do they improve quality of life?
2. Are they cost-effective?
The answer to the first question is a very guarded yes for some people, and a clear no for others. |

REPPED: I wanted to publish a personal thank you to all the readers and supporters who have read and responded to this week's articles on health freedom, the FDA, the covert attacks on NewsTarget and natural medicine in general. You are a sharp group of thoughtful, skeptical readers, and the comments you've posted are almost universally right on the money. I wish I had time to personally answer them all.
But I don't. So instead, I'm posting some follow up clarifications and comments in the hope of answering some of the more common questions we've been receiving here at NewsTarget. |
