Quercetin and other bioflavonoids also contribute in other ways to mitigate the inflammatory process. quercetin may be beneficial to connective tissue by limiting inflammation and associated tissue degradation, improving circulation, and promoting a strong collagen matrix.60-61 quercetin also plays a part in modulation of the inflammatory response, at least in part by modulating prostaglandin synthesis and cytokine production.62

It does not get into the body very well. quercetin chalcone was developed by Thorne Research and it immediately gets into the body. It is water-soluble.
We also use quercetin chalcone, both in our Joint Health Formula for Pets and in our human Joint Health Formula. We wanted a powerful anti-inflammatory for joints. quercetin chalcone, as well as turmeric, are just phenomenal for joint problems. Then we have the grape seed extract in there. So we put quercetin chalcone in Pet-C Plus because it was a more recent design than Pro-C, and that makes this formula even more potent. |

One popular flavonoid is quercetin. Found in apples, onions, and garlic, quercetin helps improve gene expression related to allergy and arthritis, and helps maintain the integrity of vascular tissue for improved circulation. Bioflavonoids, of which quercetin is one, are among the most important modifiers of gene expression, in addition to being antioxidants.
Once we understand this first principle about eating a Culture of Life anti-diabetogenic diet, we start to understand that what we take into our body has very important healing effects. In a October 1997 article in Science by Dr. |

In this group of phenolics, a large family of chemicals that includes the flavonoids, is a natural antioxidant called quercetin that protects apples against disease. Research at Cornell University shows that consuming quercetin (which is mostly contained in apple skin and just below the peel) may lower the risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease by defending nerve cells against free radical damage. In addition, previous studies have shown that quercetin helps the body fight off cancer. Is this proof that an apple a day keeps the doctor away? |

Quercetin and Bromelain
Two other natural products that may be worth consideration against allergies are quercetin and bromelain. quercetin is an antioxidant flavonoid that is found in many fruits, vegetables, and herbs. The anti-inflammatory effect of quercetin helps stabilize mast cells. These are the cells in your eyes, nose, and lungs (and other places in your body) that are highly sensitive to allergens.

Apples offer a powerful assortment of phytochemicals, including quercetin, catechin, phloridzin, and chlorogenic acid. Procyaniclins, also found in high concentrations in red wine, grapes, cocoa, and cranberries, are thought to have a protective effect on the vascular system. quercetin, also found in onions, red wine, broccoli, tea, and ginkgo biloba, appears to influence some carcinogenic markers.

The bioflavonoid quercetin, found in fresh vine-ripened fruit and available as a nutritional supplement, induces death in breast-cancer cells.832 quercetin demonstrated the ability to prevent environmental chemicals from promoting estrogen driven breast cancer.833
Interestingly, quercetin is shown to be more effective than Tamoxifen at binding to type II EBS receptors. The same study also shows it to be very effective at stopping the progression of a human breast-cancer cell line. |

Because strawberries, as well as other berries, are especially high in a quirky bioflavonoid called quercetin. quercetin, along with other bioflavonoids in berries, can also improve the health of capillaries and connective tissues. Because of this, the many benefits of quercetin include alleviating bruising, edema, varicose veins, and fragile capillaries.
A major benefit of quercetin is its ability to inhibit the release of histamine. |

Flavonoids include quercetin, which promotes insulin secretion and is a potent inhibitor of sorbitol accumulation. quercetin has been found in vitro to inhibit sorbitol accumulation in human lenses,121 and has been found to slow the course of cataract formation.122'123 Other flavonoids include naringin and hespertin; both have been found to be aldose reductase inhibitors, therefore protecting against the accumulation of sorbitol. |

If you have inflammation, you have pain. The turmeric and quercetin chalcone will knock it down so fast that suddenly -- and I know this because sometimes when I overdo it in yoga or during exercise, and I have pain and I take this stuff -- the pain goes away. This discussion takes us into the whole question of the use of wine and black and Chinese green teas, which are very high in bioflavonoids. The Chinese green teas also contain the class of bioflavonoids called cate-chins. These catechins are particularly strong antioxidants. |

Over 4,000 different flavonoids have been identified in foods and plants. quercetin, rutin, catechin, and hesperidin are the most frequently used in medicine. Flavonoids inhibit the peroxidation of lipids by acting as free radical scavengers.284 quercetin specifically has been shown to inhibit LDL oxidation.285 In addition to these direct antioxidant effects, flavonoids inhibit platelet aggregation, protect vitamin E from oxidation, and chelate iron. In numerous dietary studies, flavonoids have been shown to reduce cardiovascular disease. |
