So I reasoned back in 1985 that if that was true, maybe you could take advantage of it by developing it to treat the hyperproliferative skin disorder psoriasis. And indeed it's one of the treatments of choice now worldwide. Both activated vitamin D and its analogs are used worldwide as the first line therapy for treating psoriasis.
And so again it shows you the breadth of activity that vitamin D has. Not only just to regulate calcium metabolism and bone health, but to regulate cell growth. |

For decades we've known that psoriasis gets worse in the winter and improves in the summer. This seasonal variation in disease activity has to do with UV light exposure and vitamin D production in the skin. In fact, doctors have traditionally treated psoriasis patients with ultraviolet light therapy and topical steroids.
In the past two decades, researchers have seen that activated vitamin D and vitamin D analogs applied as ointments can reduce or eliminate psoriasis—and enhance the effectiveness of ultraviolet light therapy. |

And that's why we started realizing that people who live in higher latitudes and are more prone to vitamin D deficiency and are more prone to developing common cancers and dying of them, such as cancer of the colon, prostate, breast and even ovaries. |

PSORIASIS
Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease marked by red, scaly patches. With psoriasis, skin cells form too quickly and are replaced by new cells before they can mature. No one knows why this skin cell turnover takes place at such a rapid rate. For some reason, possibly due to an autoimmune reaction, the skin loses its ability to regulate the production of skin cells. |

Current theories suggest that poor tolerance of bacteria (usually strep) on the skin, in the mouth, or in the nose trigger the immune response that leads to psoriasis.

To heal psoriasis, one needs to daily select an appropriate type of fat (one which digests well). Fats that are easier on digestion include: fresh young coconut flesh, coconut oil, hempseed oil, flaxseed oil. One must ease into heavier dosages of fat in the diet as a weak liver (typical in those who have psoriasis) can be challenged by an excessive fat intake - even if raw.
To overcome psoriasis, all cooked fats, especially egg and milk products (cheese, milk, butter, dairy ice cream) should be completely avoided.
For those with psoriasis, six to ten colon irrigations should be undertaken. |

And the drugmaker Sandoz was sending checks for a hundred dollars to physicians who agreed to read a two-page article on how its organ transplant drug Sandimmune could treat psoriasis, a skin disease. Sandimmune had not been approved to treat psoriasis. In fact, it was so toxic that almost half the psoriasis patients taking it experimentally in one trial dropped out after it harmed their kidneys or caused their blood pressure to rise. |

Witnesses also detailed how local television stations were regularly broadcasting during their news programs videos that had been created by pharmaceutical companies to promote their products secretly without scrutiny from the FDA. The companies made the videos look like the work of broadcast journalists, while concealing their own involvement. |

METHOTREXATE
The toxic, powerful drug methotrexate (Folex PFS, Rheumatrex, Trexall) is used for cancer chemotherapy and to treat rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.
Action: Methotrexate inhibits the synthesis of DNA, the genetic material that gives cells (including cancer cells and rapidly multiplying skin cells that cause psoriasis) instructions about how to grow and reproduce themselves.
Side effects: Mouth sores, altered white blood cell counts, stomach upset, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, hair loss, and itching. |

A nutritious diet and vitamin D tend to "quiet" your immune system so it doesn't overreact to foreign proteins that come in contact with the skin.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes arthritis in the small and large joints and also can cause inflammation in the eyes, lungs, and blood vessels. |
| This was proven by German scientists who studied cell activity in the skin of psoriasis patients and found that skin soaked with magnesium decreased the ability of scavenger cells to present proteins to the T-cells for activation. In other words, in the Dead Sea location, magnesium and UV light worked together to suppress immune cell activation in the skin of psoriasis patients.

Factors such as injury to the skin, prescription drugs, stress, cold weather, bacterial infections, surgery, or sunburn may trigger psoriasis. The immune system may play a key role in the defense against the development of psoriasis.
Recommendations include digestive enzyme therapy to improve the digestion of food, maintain normal pH levels, and detoxify the body. Systemic enzyme therapy can support the immune system and act as a natural anti-inflammatory. Finally, proteolytic enzymes may help to improve circulation, speed tissue repair, and enhance wellness. |

I had arthritis, psoriasis, and low energy, and was overweight and unhappy at work.
Now I am vegan, organic, and following protocol. My cancer seems to be in full remission. I've lost twenty-six pounds. My psoriasis is gone. My hair and skin are healthy and my immune system is strong. It was through class assignments and other workbook activities that I understood I was "hard" on myself and soon experienced the positive relief of forgiveness of self and others. I left a toxic job. I meditate twice daily, exercise, practice yoga, and lift weights. |

| TOPICAL TREATMENTS
Prescription topical creams and ointments are used when psoriasis affects less than 10% of the skin surface. They also can be applied to control mildflare-ups...
•Steroids are the most effective topical drugs. They're applied twice daily. When used long-term, strong steroids can thin the skin and cause stretch marks.
•Topical retinoids, such as tazarotene (Ta-zorac), usually are used in combination with steroids, allowing for a lower steroid dose to be effective and reducing the risk of side effects. Retinoids can be irritating to the skin. |
| PUVA is effective against severe psoriasis, but it's usually a last resort. Patients given PUVA long-term are seven to 10 times more likely to develop squamous-cell carcinoma (cancer of the upper layers of the skin).
•Combination light therapy. This particular approach combines UVB light with an oral retinoid, such as acitretin (Soriatane). It's effective in 70% to 80% of cases. |
| What Is psoriasis?
This chronic skin disease causes red, scaly patches on the trunk, knees, elbows, palms and/or scalp. It is due to an abnormality in the skin cell growth cycle—a process that includes the division of cells and their migration to the skin surface, where they slowly die and flake off.

| These medications are cheaper than some of the newer psoriasis medications.
Drawback: They have a high risk of serious side effects, including organ damage. However, the damage can be managed if your physician closely monitors you.
Methotrexate can cause liver damage and a reduced white blood cell count. A patient taking methotrexate should have his/her liver biopsied every one to two years to check for liver damage. Cyclosporine can cause high blood pressure, infections and decreased kidney function. |

These two genes are overactive in psoriasis and other skin diseases, and so Pycnogenol may be beneficial in psoriasis. Other research has found that Pycnogenol protects against some of the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays in sunlight. In these experiments researchers used UV rays to turn on genes involved in inflammation following sunburn. Cells exposed to Pycnogenol maintained lower gene activity after being exposed to UV rays.
Pycnogenol also appears to regulate the gene that codes for nitric oxide synthase, an enzyme involved in the production of nitric oxide. |

Birch essential oil is used in salves and medicated soaps for the treatment of eczema and psoriasis. The essential oil also can be diluted and used as a soothing gum rub for teething infants. Curiously, what is called the essential oil of wintergreen is usually made from birch. Birch and wintergreen have similar chemistry, fragrance, and topical analgesic properties, but true wintergreen is rarely available as an essential oil.
As a flower essence, birch helps open perceptions and expands cosmic consciousness, improving peace of mind. |
| The leaf buds also can be used in poultices or compresses in the treatment of arthritis, rheumatism, burns, eczema, and psoriasis.
Edible Uses
The dried inner bark, which is best if collected in the spring, can be ground into a powder and used as a flour; it is often used in combination with other flours. The catkins, though bitter, can be consumed raw or cooked. The sap can also be ingested, as an emergency food source.
Other Uses
The fragrant resin is used in the manufacture of perfume, soap, and potpourri. The sap can be used as an adhesive glue. |
| Topically, flaxseed can be used as a healing poultice for boils, burns, carbuncles, inflammation, pleurisy, psoriasis, and shingles.
Edible Uses
This truly useful plant has been cultivated as a food source for more than seven thousand years. In the eighth century, Charlemagne passed a law requiring French citizens to consume flaxseeds so that they would be healthy subjects. Centuries later, Mahatma Ghandi said that when flaxseed became a regular food, all people would have better health. The seeds may be eaten raw or cooked. |

Stress is a huge emotional burden, so it is no surprise to find that many common stress-based disorders such as PMT, eczema, acne, psoriasis, chronic fatigue syndrome, digestive disturbances, insomnia, sinusitis, headaches, muscular aches and pains respond well to aromatherapy. Stress is also a trigger for asthma, so aromatherapy can play a part in its treatment too.
The antifungal and antibacterial properties of essential oils also supply the asthmatic with protection against airborne viruses and bacteria. |
