PROSTATE CANCER SCREENING DOESN'T SAVE LIVES prostate cancer screening Comparison Seattle/ Connecticut 1987-1997 males age 65-79 years Source: British Medical journal 325:740, 2002 PSA testing rate per 100,000 11,803 (5.39 times greater than Conn) 2,199 Biopsy rate per 100,000 per years 1,848 (2.20 times greater than Conn) 840 Cumulative rate of prostate surgery after 10 years Men in this age group in Seattle underwent 5.9 times more prostate surgery and 2.
The current view is that prostate cancer screening is of little value in prolonging life and may prompt many patients to elect for treatment they didn't need. Here is what one report says: Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening tests that yield false-positive results (indicate cancer when there is no cancer) can lead to anxiety and repeated biopsies. About 60 % of men who undergo radical prostatectomy (surgical removal of the prostate) cannot have an erection, and 30 % need to wear pads to deal with leaking urine.

My best recommendation with regard to prostate cancer screening is for men fifty years of age and older to have an annual digital rectal exam and a PSA test as a follow-up if abnormalities are found. Whether or not to have annual PSA tests beginning at around the same time is a serious matter for you and your doctor to decide together. The American Cancer Society recently reversed its position on annual PSA testing, recommending that it should be done, but I don't consider their arguments that persuasive.

The PSA test is the most widely used blood test for prostate cancer screening.13 Fruit Eat a variety of in-season fruit, preferably early in the morning or between meals. Look for nonhybridized fruit because it possesses a higher nutritional value and has less potential for allergens. Thus, choose pippin or Macoun apples rather than delicious or Macintosh, and eat a small amount of the core. Buy grapes with seeds and eat some of the seeds. They contain a group of flavonoids referred to as proanthocyanidin oligomers, PCOs for short.
SCREENING PROCEDURES There is much controversy about the value of prostate cancer screening, appropriate staging evaluation, and the optimal treatment for each stage of the disease. The prostate-specific antigen test has become a common diagnostic measure recommended to all men past the age of forty and, as a result, more early-stage cancers have been detected. This has not, however, resulted in a lower mortality rate. The chances of dying from prostate cancer remain the same for those who are screened and those who are not.

It may also mean prostate cancer screening (PSA tests) for men. Pay careful attention to how health plans explain their preventive care. For example, some plans list exactly which immunizations and boosters are covered, while others just promise to cover "routine immunizations and boosters" without revealing which ones. This is one way they may get you— after all, you will have no idea what the plan actually covers, but you may think you do. You can be sure that the plans with nonspecific language maintain internal policies making clear exactly what is "routine.

Treatment and Preventive Measures CONVENTIONAL MEDICAL TREATMENT • After the age of fifty, it is recommended that men have a yearly rectal exam to check for prostate enlargement, along with a prostate-specific antigen blood test for prostate cancer screening. Until recently, conventional medical treatment for benign prostate enlargement consisted of waiting until the enlargement and symptoms were serious enough to warrant surgery. Now the pharmaceutical drug Proscar™ is given to block the conversion of testosterone to DHT. DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONS • Eat a whole-foods diet.
