These bugs challenge the immune systems of children with unfettered constancy, as you can witness should you enter any preschool classroom or daycare center in America. Inquire of any veteran preschool teacher of thirty years and they will tell you that kids today certainly don't seem to be out less with colds and viruses and stomach bugs than they were decades ago. Rather, it seems whole grades of preschoolers will get hit with a stomach bug one week and another virus the next, leading to half-empty classrooms several times a year. |

Artificial food colorings and benzoate preservatives increase hyperactive behavior in preschool children, according to a new report in the June 2004 Archives of Disease in Childhood.
Dr. John O. Warner from Southampton General Hospital, U.K., and colleagues studied the impact of artificial food colorings and benzoate preservatives on the behavior of 277 preschool children. At the start, 36 children had hyperactivity and allergies, 75 were only hyperactive, 79 had only allergies, and 87 did not have either condition. |

Half an hour later they arrive at Selena's preschool. Becky stands holding Selena's hand, with Zach strapped to her chest in a baby carrier, at the crosswalk, waiting for the light to change. A bus pulls out in front of them, spewing a blast of diesel exhaust. A few seconds later a delivery truck rumbles by, letting out another diesel belch.
Inside the classroom, Becky waves as Selena races outside onto the playground, eager to clamber on a new wooden pirate ship climber that has just been built. On the way back out of the preschool, Zachary drops his pacifier and begins to fuss. |
| Selena, like nearly a fifth of her preschool class, has eczema and food allergies (dairy and tree nuts), but other than that, the Sandlers are all quite healthy.
Becky would no doubt be surprised, then, to learn how many noxious, invisible chemicals are quietly entering her family's bloodstreams every day, silently lodging in their cells, fat tissue, and, in Becky's case, her breast milk. |

The Berkeley studies led to the creation of Head Start, the federal education program that provides funding to send disadvantaged children to preschool. Why should poor kids be left in bare cages? The field took off, and neuroscientists began to investigate different ways to stimulate brain growth.

Liping Huang, a geneticist at the ARS Western Human Nutrition Research Center at Davis, California, notes that "mild zinc deficiency may exist in the United States among otherwise healthy infants, toddlers, preschool children, pregnant and lac-tating women, and seniors." Vegetarians who avoid meat and dairy are also at risk for mild zinc deficiencies.
Not Just a Man's Mineral
Zinc has something of a reputation in the men's health magazines as a "guy's" nutrient, largely because it is critical for the production of both sperm and the male hormone testosterone. |

Consider how things might change if there was a mandatory class from preschool through grade school based on understanding nutrition and exploring the world's various food cultures and how food affects our bodies and our lives on every level. Imagine if schools implemented real physical education programs that actually taught children how to exercise and the importance of physical activity. These things would have a great impact on our economy if with each generation our kids were leaner, had more energy and started projecting their newfound knowledge on the rest of their families. |

REPPED: The Public Health Council in New Jersey has voted to require all children attending preschool or daycare to be injected with not just one vaccine, but four different vaccines. If this rule goes into effect -- and political momentum is certainly in its favor -- New Jersey would be the first U.S. state to make the vaccination of children required by law. This means that those parents who refuse to participate in such vaccination programs would be labeled "criminals" and arrested at gunpoint. |

Motor and mental tests were performed during the first two years of life and the preschool period, and repeated during adolescence using an extensive battery of tests.
Researchers found that children with a low intrauterine growth rate (IUGR-1), when examined from infancy to age twenty-four months, lagged behind normal children in mental development. The preschoolers showed statistically lower verbal scores at thirty-six months but not at forty-eight months of age when compared to normal children. |

"Each year," they say, "young children are expelled from preschools and childcare facilities for severely disruptive behaviors and emotional disorders. |

Vitamin D Is Critical for Kids
Children, especially during infancy and in preschool years, are at greater risk for vitamin D deficiency than many adults. A study in
Pittsburgh revealed that 92 percent of African American newborns and 66 percent of European American newborns had vitamin D levels less than 30 nanograms per milliliter (normal > 35). And the infants had lower vitamin D levels than their mothers. This also means that they had vitamin D deficiency during development in the uterus.
You can use the same formulas and tables for children and infants. |
| After you were born, during your preschool years, you got every little cold or virus that came along, but your immune system was getting some heavy-duty instruction on things to defend against. Vaccinations, too, "schooled" your immune system. So as the years passed, illnesses and immunizations helped your body's immune system begin to develop memories of what was body-friendly and what was body-menacing.
The players in this process are the immune system's white blood cells—M-cells, T-cells, and B-cells. |

Studies have demonstrated the detrimental effects of pesticides on developing brains. preschool children from rural communities in the United States have shown poorer performance on motor speed and latency than do those in urban communities where the exposure is less pronounced.43 In Mexico, children with higher exposure to pesticides had diminished motor skills, short-term memory, hand-eye coordination, and drawing ability than those in urban communities. |

Becky sits down to feed Zach while Selena plays Reader Rabbit preschool on the computer. Zach is cooing at the sounds emitting from the monitor, or maybe it's the sight of the bottle of breast milk—which Becky pumped the night before in anticipation of a moment just like this, when her milk might run low, and then warmed up in the microwave—that's making him so excited. It is, by and large, a happy scene. All in all, from Becky's point of view, her Tuesday with her children has been pretty great. |

On the way back out of the preschool, Zachary drops his pacifier and begins to fuss. An advocate of the five-second rule, Becky brushes it off on her shirt and gives it to him, hoping to stave off his hunger until she can breastfeed him again in the car.
After drop-off, there are errands to run, first to the dry cleaners, then to the mall to pick up Becky's moisturizer, which she has been out of for days. Then to her hairdresser, to have her roots dyed auburn, as she does by rote every six weeks. |

For example, Iowa doctors sometimes referred their young patients to a nonprofit group called the Magic Foundation, which was started by mothers with children with rare growth disorders in 1989. Over the years, the foundation had accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars from the companies selling prescription growth hormone products. |

The prevalence of overweight among preschool children (2- to 5-year-olds) doubled from 1976-80 to 1999-2000, increasing from 5% to 10.3%. The prevalence of overweight continued to rise with 19% of 6- to 11-year-olds and 17% of 12- to 17-year-olds categorized as overweight in 2003-04. Overall, most recent estimates suggest that 17% of U.S. children and adolescents are overweight, and an additional 17% have a BMI between the 85th and 95th percentiles, indicating risk of overweight [5]. |

| Age-Specific Recommendations a. preschool Age
Children in this age group have developed self-feeding skills, food preferences, and dietary habits. Food intake and physical activity vary from day to day. For these reasons, close monitoring of dietary habits, caloric intake, and growth velocity are important. Routinely adding calories to table foods may help with maintaining optimal growth at this stage. In addition to food intake, dietary counseling should include assessment of eating behaviors. |

It is accurately summed up as follows:
"A group of Central American children suffering from malnutrition was first stabilized and brought into better health by feeding them native foods, including meat and dairy products. |

At the start, 36 children had hyperactivity and allergies, 75 were only hyperactive, 79 had only allergies, and 87 did not have either condition.
The result of the study: Parents' ratings of their children's hyperactivity fell after withdrawal of food additives from the children's diets. And there was an increase in hyperactivity when food additives were re-introduced. Parental hyperactivity ratings increased significantly when children were exposed to food additives regardless of their hyperactivity status or the presence of allergies at the start of the study. |

Although zinc intake in developing countries is often lower than in the United States, it is noteworthy that the average American diet contains less than two-thirds of the Recommended Dietary Allowance for this mineral.14
