What Your Doctor Doesn't Know About Nutritional Medicine May Be Killing You

Ray D. Strand

The November 1997 Tufts University Newsletter reported a study at the University of Maryland that looked carefully at nine different prescription prenatal vitamins. They did not look at what was in them but instead looked to see if they even dissolved. (If the pill doesn't even dissolve, it doesn't really matter what is in it.) They discovered that only three of the. nine prenatal vitamins even dissolved. That is correct: only three of the nine. The pills that dissolved were produced under what are called U.S. Pharmacopoeia (USP) standards.

Vitamin D Recommendation Missing From Breast Cancer Task Force Report on Black Women

Mike Adams, the Health Ranger

This is even true among black women who were taking prenatal vitamins. (Click here to read the story.) So why are black women so much more deficient in vitamin D than white women? The answer is right under our noses: Skin color! Darker skin pigmentation, you see, blocks ultraviolet light absorption which generates vitamin D in the skin. Since vitamin D is a substance that halts the growth of cancer tumors when circulating in the blood, it's not at all complex to understand why vitamin D deficiency in black women would result in higher breast cancer mortality.

Transdermal Magnesium Therapy

Seelig We really have to wonder when we find out that most prenatal vitamins don't even contain magnesium, and when they do its in pathetically small amounts. (25-50 mg.) It is so sad that despite all the evidence and the absolute ease with which the public could have their magnesium needs met, we do not even help the babies and expectant mothers. When we do find magnesium used correctly, i.e., when magnesium sulfate is routinely given intravenously to halt pre-term labor or prevent convulsions in women with pregnancy-induced hypertension (eclampsia) we see clear results.

For this reason, pregnant women are advised to keep their preformed vitamin A levels below 5000 IU daily, for example, from prenatal vitamins. To avoid any possibility of increasing birth defects, a diet rich in vegetables and fruit is an alternative to preformed vitamin A sources. One medium-sized carrot provides a safe alternative vitamin A source and contains about 16,000 IU. Osteoporosis and Vitamin A In older men and women, long-term intakes of preformed vitamin A can be associated with increased risk of osteoporotic fracture and decreased bone mineral density.

What about free prenatal vitamins? Or just free hugs? The world needs more free hugs. And the Population Control Award goes to... Health authorities in the U.S. announced this week that 100,000 lives could be saved each year if people used more sunscreen and got more frequent mammograms and prostate cancer screenings. This little stunt wins the Population Control Award of 2007 because the more people actually follow this truly bad advice, the smaller the population will be in 2008. How so?

In fact, they were given a combination of compounds that is a variation on the prenatal vitamins given to pregnant women today—vitamin B12, folic acid, betaine, and choline. The results rocked the genetic world. Fat yellow female mice that had mated with fat yellow male mice had thin brown babies. That seemed to throw everything the scientific community understood about heredity up in the air. A genetic examination of the brown baby mice only added to the mystery. Their genes were the same as their parents'.

The worst-case scenario is a premenopausal woman who just had a baby, was on birth control pills prior to her pregnancy, is on prenatal vitamins, and goes back on the pill after the baby is born. She'll have sky-high copper levels, almost toxic relative to zinc. " Wth the schizophrenic patient I use niacinamide or niacin (more frequendy niacinamide because most patients won't tolerate niacin). I tend to use much of what Abram Hoffer has come up with. I look for a minimum of 3000 milligrams of niacinamide a day with an equal amount of vitamin C.

A woman should continue to take prenatal vitamins in order to meet the nutrient requirements of breastfeeding. Especially important is continued intake of calcium (page 483) and calcium-rich foods. Breast milk contains essential fatty acids. The fat composition of breast milk varies with a woman's diet. If a woman consumes foods that provide essential fatty acids (e.g., vegetable oils such as canola oil, corn oil, and safiflower oil; nut and seed oils; and fish), the breast milk she produces will contain higher quantities of essential fatty acids.

Pregnant women with epilepsy should take prenatal vitamins and get plenty of sleep to avoid seizures. They also should take vitamin K after thirty-four weeks of pregnancy to reduce the risk of the blood-clotting disorder called neonatal coagulopathy, which can result from the fetal exposure to epilepsy medication. Unless otherwise specified, the dosages recommended here are for adults. For a child between twelve and seventeen, reduce the dose to three-quarters the recommended amount.

And so we reasoned that probably women during pregnancy, even though they're taking their prenatal vitamins that contain 400 units of vitamin D, they're only getting 40% of what they need. So we did a study at our hospital, and we looked at women coming in and giving birth, and we measured their vitamin D levels -- their 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels, and the infants' 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels at birth. 49 infant-mother pairs were looked at, mostly African-American and Hispanic but some Caucasian as well. 76% of mothers were severely vitamin D deficient.

Again, though, women often don't go to their doctors and start taking prenatal vitamins until after the crucial six-week period of organ formation has passed, he says. Make Multivitamins a Must "A good multivitamin is essential for pregnant women," says Willow Moore, D.C, N.D., a chiropractor and naturopathic doctor in Owings Mills, Maryland. Doctor, what Should I Eat?: Nutrition Prescriptions for Ailments in Which Diet Can Really Make a Difference

If you are "working" on a family, it's a good idea to take prenatal vitamins even before you get pregnant. Avoid fad diets and fasting while still in the planning stage so that when the "moment" occurs, your body will be ready. Good prenatal care means more than just having your obstetrician examine you. Every visit should include a discussion of your dietary needs and habits at your particular stage of pregnancy. Pages 391 and 392 contain summaries of your daily dietary goals during pregnancy whether you're omnivorous or a vegetarian.
But don't take more prenatal vitamins than recommended on the bottle or by your obstetrician. Too much vitamin A, for example, can result in birth defects. In any event, keep in close touch with your doctor throughout your pregnancy so that he or she can adjust your nutritional needs, which vary at different stages of your pregnancy. The Surgeon General of the United States advises no alcohol for the entire forty weeks of gestation because it can cause birth defects, including fetal alcohol syndrome. Some doctors I know permit their patients to have one glass of wine a week.

If they were on a diet, not paying particular attention to their nutrition, and not taking any prenatal vitamins, their fetus may be short-changed. What you eat before your pregnancy and during its first twelve weeks helps determine how well your child's immune system develops, how healthy he or she will be, and, indeed, can even help prevent a miscarriage. So if you are trying to start or enlarge your family, don't diet. Forget about your waistline for now. Once you're pregnant, that measurement will become academic anyway.

Don't try to "save" a few dollars by getting a cheaper version of prenatal vitamins. Many vitamin supplements do not have the bases or yeasts necessary to process the B vitamins in your body. The best way to ensure that is to continue your prenatal vitamins while nursing. You also need 15 grams of extra protein a day for a total of 65 grams, during the first six months of lactation, and an extra 12 grams per day for the next six months. Two to 3 cups of milk daily will satisfy that need. There is one important qualification to the "permission" to eat what you like while nursing. Go easy on the sweets and fruits for the first two or three months of nursing.

Regardless, the Hispanic ladies who came to deliver their babies in the county hospital, those who didn't drink heavily or do any drugs, seemed to have the easiest births with the fewest complications. What was amusing to me is that two times during this rotation, ladies came in after having given birth at home.

Again, look for formulas that do not contain ferrous sulfate, which is constipating. °^ Restless Leg Syndrome Iron deficiency in the elderly may cause restless leg symptom. My nursing mothers are advised to eat eggs, if tolerated, and dark green leafy vegetables and to take prenatal vitamins and bone-meal tablets for an abundance of calcium. They are advised to eschew all cow milk protein, chocolate, cola drinks, peanuts, and raw onion, and to eat anything else they want that doesn't upset their nursing baby. This amount is commonly present in prenatal vitamins and other supplements. Zinc has been used therapeutically in very high doses (up to 150 mg per day) for prostate enlargement, but such doses may not be necessary if you combine this treatment with essential fatty acids, herbs, and other nutrients. With high doses of zinc, special attention has to be paid to the proper mineral balance in the body, especially copper. These doses may decrease the level of good cholesterol (HDL). Zinc may be helpful in the removal of lead and cadmium from tissues.
