What's especially frightening about this program is that it may include the dosing of pregnant women with prescription drugs that we now know increase the risk of birth defects. We also know from clinical trials and experiments involving mice that children who grow up on antidepressant drugs have a much higher risk of being depressed as adults whether or not they continue taking those drugs. |
| In other words, it's not enough that as a nation we misdiagnose childhood hyperactivity caused by sugar consumption as being a brain chemistry imbalance and then dose all those children with Ritalin, it seems that we also want to start dosing pregnant women as well. Who's next? Are we going to dose all men under the age of 30? Are we going to require the mental health screening of all elderly people, and start dosing everyone over the age of 65 with brain altering drugs too? |

A Canadian study found that pregnant women who have asthma are more likely to have premature and low-birth-weight babies.
This survey of 13,980 children who were born in Manitoba found that mothers who had asthma were, on average, 2.77 times more likely to have a baby born at less than 28 weeks' gestation and 3-04 times more likely to have a baby born at less than 32 weeks' gestation than a nonasth-matic mother. |
| Several countries, including Canada, Norway, Sweden, Britain, Germany and Denmark, currently advise dentists against using mercury fillings for pregnant women. However, the ADA contends that this recommendation was made despite the lack of scientific evidence of systemic health problems or toxic effects and maintains its position that dental amalgam should remain an option for patients.
ADA POSITION
"Our position is one of looking at the scientific evidence and believing it's safe and effective and that dentists and patients should have the option," says Dr. Ron R. |
| REACTION
A consortium of organizations including Consumers for Dental Choice, the Mercury Policy Project and the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology filed a petition to the FDA to immediately ban mercury fillings for pregnant women so as to protect their unborn children. The FDA has six months to respond to the petition.
"We're doing this primarily as a precautionary measure to protect unborn children from unnecessary exposure to mercury," says Michael Bender, director of the Mercury Policy Project, located in Montpelier, Vermont. |

Kweder adds, "This isn't a cause for panic among women who are taking these medicines, and they should not stop their medication on their own. Stopping these medications on your own can sometimes create more problems than it solves. |

Blood was collected from 949 pregnant women and saved for 5.7 years, by which time 306 of them had died. Statistical analyses showed that the lower her original plasma selenium level, the more likely the woman was to have died of AIDS. This selenium-death relationship was statistically significant.

The pregnant women with the highest phthalate levels — equivalent to the levels currently found in about a quarter of US women — were more likely to have baby sons with smaller penises and incompletely descended testicles. The boys were also more likely to have a shorter distance from their anus to their penis (called anogenital distance, or AGD), which is an indicator of masculinity. The distance is about half as long in girls as it is in boys. "None of our boys looked weird; they weren't grossly deformed," Swan explained. "But they had subde differences. |
| We spent $175 per product to determine if phthalates are present, a cost hardly within the budget of most pregnant women trying to steer clear of myriad products that could potentially harm a fetus," the report said.
