Garlic processing
A study was designed to compare several garlic powders with various levels of alii in, a precursor of active sulfur compounds, for their ability to prevent cancer. Rodents were fed diets with three garlic powders with various alliin contents. The garlic powders were obtained from bulbs grown on soils with different levels of sulfur fertilization. A cancer-causing chemical (aflatoxin) was injected into the animals. |

Unsurprisingly, perhaps, the orthodox doctors who eventually performed the trial reported the powders inefficacious.6
The epidemic continued despite medical and public health efforts, and by November 1874, another trial of the Chinese powders was under way. This time, the drugs were chemically analysed under the auspices of the Medical Society of Victoria and the Technology Museum in Melbourne. |

After bleaching directly with gas was eliminated in the textile industry, relatively few, other than those who made bleaching powders, accidentally inhaled chlorine on the job. Although those who packed chlorine bleach powder were exposed heavily and suffered greatly, their cohort was tela-tively small in number, and users of the powders were not heavily exposed. Experimental chemists constituted one of the only othei groups of workers at significant risk for gas inhalation during this period. |

These powders are made primarily from soy protein and fructose, which is why I'm not excited about the product line in general, as I don't recommend protein powders made with fructose.
However, they now have a line that is unsweetened. They call it the Simply Natural line of Spirutein protein powders, and these are fantastic. The flavors are wonderful, the lineup offers a considerable variety of flavors, and of course there's a little bit of spirulina in these products as well, but not that much, by the way. |

Green powders These are great ways to get a lot of servings of vegetables into a shake or smoothie. Berry Green, Dr. Schulte's, Very Green, and Miracle Greens or Reds can all be found in natural foods stores.
Hemp protein powder Made from hemp seeds (a cousin of marijuana, and no, you will not feel high eating it), this powder contains the essential amino acids and has the benefits of whey protein powder without the downsides. (Many whey powders contain sugar or artificial sweeteners.) The seeds are high in fat, albeit mostly omega-3s.

| And other days I'll take none and just focus on the superfoods powders. But you can eat these like food. We can actually live on these superfoods. They are foods, they're not medicines. So don't treat them like medicines.
The only reason I would recommend relying on the Alive pills, by the way, is if you absolutely cannot stand the taste of supergreens powders. The pills allow you to get the foods into your system without tasting them. But I encourage you to use both. |
| Because over time, once again, you will become accustomed to the taste of superfood powders, and there is something beneficial about actually tasting the foods as they enter your system. It prepares your body to more properly digest those foods. I also think that given the digestive problems some people have, that superfood powders have far greater bioavailability than superfood pills. So they also go to work more quickly in your system, because they don't have to be physically broken down by your stomach. Again, there's nothing wrong with pills. |

If you choose to increase soy foods or take soy beverages, powders, or supplements, a word about dosages and addressing some of the highly publicized controversies about soy is important. A reasonable approach would be to ingest a daily level of isoflavones that does not exceed the amount consumed in ethnic diets that contain high amounts of isoflavones. From a review of those diets, it appears that this amount is somewhere between 50 to 150 mg of isoflavones per day for adults. The isoflavone content of soy foods varies with the form. |
| Soy and red clover isoflavones were evaluated in this review, including soy foods, beverages, or powders; soy extracts; and red clover extracts, for a total of 25 studies. Only one soy food trial and two soy extract trials showed the ability to reduce hot flushes.
The final report comes from a consensus opinion of the North American Menopause Society,31 which acknowledges that some data does support the efficacy of isoflavones in reducing the incidence and severity of hot flashes but that many studies have not found any difference. |

Pre-Conquest chocolate was not a single concoction to be drunk; it was a vast and complex array of drinks, gruels, porridges, powders, and probably solid substances, to all of which could be added a wide variety of flavorings, as will be seen in Chapter Three.
Some of these flavorings appear in Classic Maya writings. We have already mentioned two (known only by name) on the Rio Azul screw-top jar. |

Unlike most loose mineral powders, this one lists kaolin (clay) as the main ingredient. Because it has a clay base, this powder provides an extremely marte finish without a hint of shine (except for the Warmth and Mineral Veil shades). It applies smoothly, feels surprisingly silky, and offers medium to almost full coverage that can look more apparent than you might like yet doesn't feel heavy. The downside is that most of the nine shades don't resemble real skin tones. Warmest Beige, Warmth, Buff, Almond, and Mineral Veil all have issues associated with being too peach, red, or ash. |

These little seeds fit beautifully into the matrix of the powders. You could chew on it. You could eat it. It did not settle or sift out. It was kind of a perfect mix. It was for the essential fatty acids that we were doing it initially.
Mike: What is the name of this product?
Dr. Liers: Living Fuel. I co-developed it with K.C. Craichy, the CEO of Living Fuel Inc. The website for Living Fuel Inc. is www.LivingFuel.com and we have two versions of it. One is the original, the Super Greens, and then we did another version, because half the people in the country have an aversion to greens. |

Her Emerald Balance product line delivers truly outstanding nutrition with no junk, no artificial ingredients and no shortcuts. Her new chocolate flavor introduced this year is flat-out delicious, with hint of mint. It's amazing how much nutrition Jan manages to get into a superfood formula that tastes this great! It doesn't have any "greens" taste or strange aftertaste. |

Within every category of product—foundations, mascaras, blushes, eyeshadows, concealers, powders, lipsticks, brushes, and pencils—I established specific criteria, and I evaluate the products based on those criteria. For example, according to my criteria, a foundation meant for someone with oily skin should be matte, contain minimal to no greasy or emollient ingredients, blend easily, leave a smooth, even finish, and have no blatant breakout-triggering ingredients. |

Earth's Promise is a green food or superfood supplement made of nutrient-rich food concentrates, including various vegetable powders, fruit powders, green tea and seaweed. Plus, there's fiber as well. This is one of the best tasting green foods products I've tried. Earth's Promise tastes so good that I can just drink it straight with water, without grimacing. You can put it in water, or as I sometimes like to do, put some oats in a bowl, add a little bit of stevia for sweetener, and then put in a couple of tablespoons Earth's Promise to make what I call purple oatmeal. |

But, in certain people, St. John's Wort causes hives, skin sensitivities, headaches, restlessness, dizziness and mental confusion. It should not be taken by pregnant women, women trying to become pregnant or by those breastfeeding. It can negatively interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) used to treat depression. |

Bread pills, tonics, powders, tinctures—all these things were used by doctors, though always with some sense of defensiveness and ambivalence.
In 1903, Richard Cabot, Harvard Medical School professor and a doyen of American medicine, confessed: "I was brought up, as I suppose every physician is, to use placebos, bread pills, water subcutaneously, and other devices for acting upon a patient's symptoms through his mind. |

Greens formulas (drinks, powders) may or may not be advantageous and should be labeled for their ORAC values to help consumers evaluate their antioxidant power. The addition of a relatively small amount of fruit extracts to a multivitamin regimen could deliver the ORAC antioxidant power needed when the body is challenged by oxidative stress.

| The fact that so many Americans, especially older Americans, are seeking cancer protection in pills and powders is alarming, "said one spokesperson for the AICR. The survey found:
13% of Americans age 18-35 years take supplements to lower their risk for cancer
24% of Americans age 55 to 64 and 54% over age 65 took vitamins with the specific aim of lowering cancer risk. [Reuters, August 31, 2000]

In 1874, members of Victoria's Parliament responded to such media and voter pressure by debating the appropriateness of a proposed trial of the powders. C. Campbell, Member for Ararat—home to several prominent Chinese practitioners—rubbed salt into open wounds. Not only did he urge the Government to try the Chinese remedy, he justified his request by noting that 'the disease had baffled medical science to a great extent.' Perhaps even worse, he suggested that 'the vast empire of China' could hold at least a few drugs 'which might be of extreme value to this colony'. |

Hundreds of millions of consumers are buying pills, powders, tonics and other formulas to improve their health. At least that is what they are led to believe. False promises and unsubstantiated claims have propelled this industry into a $23 billion money-making juggernaut with thousands of manufacturers each promoting the next formula designed to achieve one of the four big, fat health and fitness lies:
1. Supplements will make you look better
2. Supplements will make you feel better
3. Supplements will make you live longer

Powders are the least absorbed through our skin, while oily solutions or those designed to increase moisture allow more of the chemical to be absorbed. Eye makeup can be absorbed by the highly sensitive mucous membranes covering the eyeball. Hair sprays, perfumes, and dusting powders can be inhaled, irritating the lungs. Lipstick is often chewed or licked off and swallowed.
When trying to assess which products are safe and which are dubious, the usually extensive list of ingredients can make things very confusing. |

Extra time filtering is normally required when working with plant powders, but many herbalists prefer working with powders instead of bulky cut herbs, since they make stronger extracts. It is also recommended that you use distilled or purified water when extracting medicinal plants. Regular tap water can contain chlorine and other chemicals that might have an interaction or chain reaction with one or more of the many chemicals found in plants.
Instructions for the main preparation methods used throughout this book in the reference guides and in the main plant section are detailed below. |
