Mike: And, by the way, I want to make a comment that you have a very healthy posture and obviously a very healthy spine, and that's so important for holistic or whole-body health. And obviously, this health comes out of your philosophy and your activity. Do you have any programs that emphasize spinal health?
Smith: Well, the new program that I'm working on right now that I've mentioned -- the Matrix Method -- does have a whole section on posture, but I would say in about half of the videos that I do, we do posture work in them. |
| Stretching here and strengthening the back helps keep that erect posture. And it's something, again, that with driving or if you're sitting a lot, you should do -- and not just twice a week. That should be one or a couple of times throughout the day that you kind of focus on.
Mike: Yes. We tend to be very closed up in today's society, don't we? We rotate forward. We cave in our chest.
Smith: Yes, yes.
Mike: And we close up all our organs, don't we?
Smith: Yes. |

It also has been shown to strengthen the immune system, reduce stress, and improve balance and posture (all important as we get older). Chi-gong works the energy fields we talked about on page 79—by tapping into those intangible life forces that we believe have a profound impact on both our health and the way we feel.
The most important goal of chi-gong is to learn how to breathe correctly— which involves breathing from the tan tien—a point two inches below the navel. |

It is in our posture, facial expression, and gait. Above all, it is in the decisions we make, in the hobbies we have, in the profession or work we choose, and the people with whom we get involved. The physiology of hopelessness is the bottom rung of a whole chain of feeling that ultimately results in depression. We can feel defeated long before we have words for it. Many of my patients report how they gave up trying in school as a result of that feeling of defeat. Or they gave up trying to find a partner in life if they encountered the slightest obstacle. |

It progresses without any obvious symptoms until irreversible pain, loss of height, change in posture, and bone fractures make it all too obvious. Osteoporosis develops when bones become overly porous and brittle from the loss of calcium and other minerals. It should not be taken lightly; osteoporosis is the twelfth leading cause of death in America. More than 25 million Americans, four-fifths of them women, currently suffer from osteoporosis. After age sixty-five, one-half of all women and one-fifth of all men break bones due to osteoporosis—a total of 1.3 million fractures a year. |

Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy covers a number of healing modalities, for it means 'healing using water'. However, many current ideas can be traced back to Sebastian Kneipp (1821-97), a Dominican monk from Bavaria who is the recognised founder of modern hydrotherapy.
Author of books on the healing benefits of water, Kneipp cured himself of a lung disorder by a routine of plunging himself into ice-cold water then warming himself with vigorous exercise. |
| ROLFING AND ASTHMA
Rolfing can be very effective in correcting the hunched posture assumed by some asthmatics, and for loosening and breaking up muscle tension around the spinal column and scapular region. Pain tolerance levels must be considered and need to be carefully monitored but, provided the patient can cope with this treatment, rolfing is suitable for adults who believe the cause of their distress is due to a misaligned body structure.

| The founder, Dr John Thie, an American chiropractor, claims it can help relieve aches and pains, improve posture, eliminate tension, enliven energy levels, help to prevent illness, promote relaxation and wellbeing. Fault corrections are made using massage or light touch techniques which it is said will restore the body's flow of energy. Essentially this is a discipline that lay people learn and practise, rather than professionals, and classes are held regularly in most countries.
Massage
Massage is something most of us naturally do almost every day. |
| Have a relaxed posture: don't hunch your shoulders.
If you want to gain the most beneficial results from the exercises, each exercise should be done 6-8 times, and as often as possible throughout the day. Many of the exercises can be practised when sitting, driving, walking, running, climbing stairs or watching television. Remember, it takes more muscular effort to be tense than it does to relax. Lessen the strain—relax.
All these exercises should only be done when you are asthma-free. |

To have a vertebral fracture defined this way, you don't have to have pain, a change in posture, or anything at all that would make you aware of any problem. In fact, most of the time the only person who knows you have a vertebral fracture is your radiologist. Even the term fracture is misleading; it's really just a loss of bone mass. For the 50% or so of women who do not have pain, there are no implications to having a vertebral fracture, other than the fact that it might make you a little shorter. |

Close your eyes and notice your posture.
þ Think about the natural flow of your breath, focusing on air filling and leaving the lungs.
þ Notice your toes—any tension, tingling, or temperature change?
þ Move to thinking about your feet, heels, and ankles, all the way up through the knees, thighs, and pelvis.
þ Continue with each body part—going through both the front and back of your body as you work your way up—finishing with the throat, jaw, tongue, face, and brow.

PUMP YOUR MUSCLES
As you already know, exercise is hardly the best way to lose weight, but as you've also learned, muscle mass increases the calories you can burn. Following the exercise plan described in Chapter 10 will add just the right amount of stress to your system. Again, exercise prolongs your life because it is stressful, not because it is beneficial in itself. |

The difference is that while there is no verbal recall of early trauma and deprivation, the body will remember in its posture, facial set, chronic cough, and constant fears. We need to match memory with the whole organic state. It cannot be done when the patient is sitting up in a well-lit room discussing matters objectively. There are many memory systems, not the least of which is our immune system, which "remembers" a vaccination for decades.
We can see, therefore, that anything that calls itself cognitive therapy is confining, to say the least. |

UNGAINLY GAIT
UNSTEADINESS
If your elderly aunt seems unsteady on her feet, or tends to lean backward when standing or even sitting, it may be a sign of a newly recognized posture disorder named psychomotor disadaptation syndrome (PDS). Hesitating when starting to walk and a tendency to take small steps with a shuffling gait—medically called marche a petits pas—are characteristics of this condition. A fear of falling is also another characteristic sign of this disorder. PDS is sometimes mistaken for Parkinson's disease and other neuromuscular disorders. (See Tremors, below. |

The body remembers in its gait and posture, in its facial set. Recall is a strictly cerebral event. One important factor: in the reliving we never try to change the outcome of memory. We do not try to rewrite history. We put the patient on the neurologic track and the rest is a matter of following history.
The history of neurosis is the history of misery; let us let the patient cry out that misery, and scream for all the times he was hurt and could not express it. |

| The calling of the Earth to witness is represented in traditional Buddhist art by images of the Buddha, sitting in the classic Buddha posture, with the right hand resting on the right knee and its fingers lightly touching the ground.
38 The point is that Buddhahood, Enlightenment, cannot be communicated, but only the way to Enlightenment. This doctrine of the incommu-nicability of the Truth which is beyond names and forms is basic to the great Oriental, as well as to the Platonic, traditions. |
| The dance posture of the God may be visualized as the symbolic syllable AUM or 3*J> which is the verbal equivalent of the four states of consciousness and their fields of experience. (A: waking consciousness; U: dream consciousness; M: dreamless sleep; the silence around the sacred syllable is the Unmanifest Transcendent. For a discussion of this syllable, cf. infra, pp. 265-267, and note 16, p. 267.) The God is thus within the worshiper as well as without.

Levine and his colleagues have shown that lean and obese individuals are different in the energy dedicated to the maintenance of posture, activities of daily living, and even fidgeting. As mentioned in the previous chapter, a person of normal weight typically sits 150 fewer minutes each day, and burns 350 more calories per day from the collective impact of numerous small activities and movements than someone who is overweight. Burning 350 calories per day is equivalent to about 40 pounds of fat in one year, so this is a very important factor in long-term weight control. |

His shyness is protection against primal pain, a pain he cannot even recall but is registered in every part of him: his posture, facial expression, gait, cadence of speech (slow and methodical). All of those are aspects of memory. He has lost access to these memories, but the prototype remains as a memory of a past long gone. Who we are is memory incarnate.

One is that to carry anything on it, you have to lean forward, so you're walking around all day carrying this huge load on your back, and it's really bad for your posture and spine. The human body was not designed to carry weight in this way, and if you do it for a prolonged period of time, it can lead to posture problems or injury. In fact, just putting on a weighted backpack can injure people because of the twisting motion of the spine and the abnormal lifting of weight. |

Providing acute pain relief is one of the greatest challenges for natural medicine, whether it is pelvic pain, headaches, or musculoskeletal pain. Mild and moderate levels of pelvic pain are more treatable with natural therapies than is severe pain, although some women with severe pain will experience relief from the therapies that follow. |
| Regarding aerobic activities such as running or jogging, it is important to keep the body in an upright posture and the arms at a 90-degree angle, swinging from the shoulder. The feet should land almost flat-footed with the weight well back toward the heel. Only sprinters should run on their toes. Breathing should be through the mouth and nose in a regular fashion. Overall, the body should be loose, natural, and poised. Each sport should be studied to ensure adequate technique. |
