There is a neat party distinction, by the way, when politicians get into psychic trouble: Democratic politicians and their wives tend to suffer from mental illness (Eagleton, Kitty Dukakis, Tipper Gore), and Republicans from drug abuse (Betty Ford, George W. Bush). Only one in five voters said the press should report that a presidential candidate is taking antidepressants, placing it below spouse abuse, income tax evasion, exaggerated military or academic record, ongoing or past affair, homosexuality, cocaine and marijuana use, or a past drinking problem as an area of concern. |

Houston, we have a (hurricane) problem
Houston, Texas: 5 August 2045, 9 p.m.: As the evening light fades, an oily swell has begun to rise in the Gulf of Mexico. A few fluffy clouds catch the dying rays of the Sun, but the sky looks almost too tranquil. Only a thickening veil of high-altitude cirrus gives a hint of what is to come.
On the ground, however, all hell has broken loose. Shop owners are frantically boarding up their stores. |

Those politicians who run on a platform of radical health care reforms are likely to pick up a lot more support than those unwise enough to try to defend the current system.
This is a tough call for Republicans, since most Republicans support Big Pharma and the corporate control of modern medicine, usually at the expense of the people. Democrats, though, are also on Big Pharma's payroll, as was obvious with the recent voting record on the FDA Revitilization Act co-sponsored by Sen. Edward Kennedy. The truth is, Big Pharma owns virtually all the politicians in Washington (except Rep. |

The main beneficiaries are the drug companies and those politicians who are paid handsomely to close their eyes to the fraud at hand.
The drug companies (and politicians) are not the only ones making a fortune from these drugs. The pharmacies also take a big cut. For example, if you want to buy a brand name drug that costs $100 for 100 pills, but your pharmacists offers you a generic version of the same drug for $80, you may think you are getting a great deal. This is not the case. The pharmacy gets the 100 pills for $10 and sells them to you for $80! |

The article was quick to point out the fact that male politicians are exposed more than most men to these toxins because they typically have makeup applied before appearing in television studios. What if the politicians were women who wear makeup every day? Male fetuses exposed to phthalates in the womb may result in malformation of the reproductive tract and decreased semen quality later in life.
It would be impossible to cover every toxin and its related effects in this book. Doing justice to just the most common toxins we encounter today would require hundreds of pages. |

Just ask all the corrupt politicians in Missouri who legalized riverboat gambling a few years back.
Getting back to drugs, why do you think alcohol remains a legal drug? Because states and cities tax it. State governments are addicted to alcoholics as a source of revenue to fund their voter entitlement programs that get politicians reelected. Alcohol is a cash machine for cities and states.
Sometimes the exact same chemical is both legal and illegal, depending on who profits from it. The FDA, for example, banned the Chinese herb ma huang because it contains ephedra. |

Speaking of bull excrement, Bush also signed an executive order outlawing cow farts -- a significant source of methane gas that scientists say is more dangerous to the climate than a room full of eco-ignorant politicians. Cows will now be required to hold it in, and the Cow Agency of Farting Enforcement (CAFE) is being formed as a new division under the Department of Homeland Security. Agents are descending upon Greeley, Colorado to monitor the flatulence of cow herds at this very moment. The only question is: Will the view be any different than their regular jobs? |

In recent years, students in China, Japan, and Singapore have outpaced American kids in these crucial subjects, but Naperville is the conspicuous exception: when its students took the TIMSS, they finished sixth in math and first in the world in science. As politicians and pundits sound the alarm about faltering education in the United States, and about our students being ill-equipped to succeed in today's technology-driven economy, Naperville stands out as an extraordinary bit of good news.
I haven't seen anything as uplifting and inspiring as Naperville's program in decades. |

Rather than create a viable model that actually benefits all Americans, our politicians, operating under the narcotic influence of health care industry lobbyists armed with tons of cash, have allowed the creation of the costliest health care system in the world. Despite the high cost, the World Health Organization ranked the U.S. 37th out of 191 countries. We are not getting what we paid for, or we are paying for the wrong things. It is enough to give one a migraine. |

Jumping ahead with the research that does exist in order to claim that the invisible chemicals around us are causing or exacerbating a rise in autoimmunity is the kind of connecting-of-dots and blame-the-environment speculation that makes many politicians crazy, and that chemical-industry publicists routinely deem as toothless.
In Arkansas, Gilbert is now deepening her research to see what the exact mechanisms are by which TCE activates T cells. "Industry interest seems to center on designing drugs to stop those T cells from activating after exposures," says Gilbert. |

Better Breathing Leads to a Better Mood
When we're stressed, we tend to hold our breath or take very small breaths of air.Taking three or four slow, very deep breaths can help you to loosen up and disengage from a stressful situation. You can adopt and simplify some of the techniques of meditation. Sit upright in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. This breathing exercise uses the word healing. Inhale slowly and deeply while I you stretch out the syllable "hee. |

With the politicians we got now, it's enough to depress anyone," Mr. Parnelli said.

"Theresa's right. I haven't seen as much humor in life in the last few years. Maybe it's because I'm not sleeping as well as I did when I was younger."
"That too, doctor," Mrs. Parnelli said. "I was reading about depression, just in case, you know, and it said that insomnia and sleeplessness are classic symptoms of depression. Is that true? |

Remember, politicians raising money for election campaigns also insist that political contributions have no influence either. Do you believe them? And if money didn't have influence, then why do the world's most powerful corporations consistently and repeatedly donate hundreds of millions of dollars to politicians (sometimes to two or more opposing political parties) before every election?
All of this helps explain why most mainstream news blatantly reflects the financial interests of the world's largest and most influential corporations. |

Getting involved in grassroots activities and political action groups and backing politicians who are committed to taking back the environment are critical if we hope to leave the legacy of a cleaner environment to our children's children. But the whole planet is not going to be saved from decades of chemical degradation overnight. In the meantime, we need to find ways to lessen the burden of chemicals and potential triggers with which we may come into contact. |

This is totally personal," Gadbury said. "The politicians are not voting on facts. They are voting because their mother died of breast cancer." A hush fell over the room, Susan recalled. "It was like there was this sudden understanding that these aren't just hippie liberals, these are people who are sick. This is mainstream America. Maybe we need to pay attention. There was a sense of confusion in the room, like people were wondering if they really did have the science to back up what they were saying."

Farmers, politicians, and environmental historians have used the term soil exhaustion to describe a wide range of circumstances. Technically, the concept refers to the end state following progressive reduction of crop yields when cultivated land no longer supports an adequate harvest. What defines an adequate harvest could span a wide range of conditions, from the extreme where land can no longer support subsistence farming to where it is simply more profitable to clear new fields instead of working old ones. |

FACTOIP
Plenty of people, from canoodling celebrities to crooked politicians, have found themselves in some pretty public pickles. When it comes to their health, however, millions of Americans are finding themselves in their own pickles, as they wrestle with the disease of diabetes. That's because when you have diabetes—the disease that's associated with blood sugar and insulin malfunction in overweight people—you're essentially pickling yourself, basting yourself in fluid that has a high concentration of sugar. |

The government has accepted responsibility for collection, interpretation, and action related to prescription and over-the-counter drug incidents: The adverse events reports (AERs) are a compilation of reports submitted by patients, doctors, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. But, these reports are considered to reflect only 10% of events that actually occur. |

In 427 B.C., Plato opined: "The price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men." His words are as true today as they were centuries ago. And in today's complicated, frenetic society, the likelihood of his sentiment being heralded and addressed is remote.
When Mayor Marion Berry spoke about his city (Washington, D.C.), he stated that "outside the killings, Washington has one of the lowest crime rates around. |
| Politicians have exempted themselves from such corruption, though, by passing a multitude of rules and laws that obfuscate where the monies come from...and where they end up. Soft money, PAC (political action committee) money, campaign contributions...private donations, corporate donations...where do these begin, and where do "courtesies" such as fine dinners, exotic trips, or pricey honorariums end? Any politician or lobbyist worth his salt can cover his ass with the electorate by pointing to some arcane legislation that permits dubious exchanges of money or favors. Payola? |

Many elected officials entrusted with the protection of our well-being and freedom do not realize the carnage their actions cause. Many citizens with chronic diseases were stripped of their rights for potential cures when Congress voted to prevent therapeutic stem cell research. These votes supposedly centered on religious convictions and conservative values. One Congressman (George Nethercutt, Washington) from the Northwest voted against the bill to allow stem cell research even though his daughter has diabetes. |
| Politicians elected to legislate should pass legislation to protect our freedoms. Scientists meant to work as unbiased observers and researchers should serve humanity. Accordingly, these changes should be expedited:
• Government agencies should not be excluded from liability.
• Research results that were obtained by federal funding must be fully disclosed (other than those involving national security).
• Government employees, including elected officials, must provide full disclosure of any ties to private corporations, including any financial holdings in such corporations. |

Social Darwinism forged ahead without the endorsement of the man whose name it appropriated. In Germany in 1895, Alfred Ploetz established the grounds for racial hygiene.
