The Detox Strategy: Vibrant Health in 5 Easy Steps

Brenda Watson and Leonard Smith

Both yoga and pilates are best done with the help of an instructor at a studio or gym, especially if you are a beginner. A class setting will also encourage proper form and teach you the poses. pilates can entail the use of machines or can be performed on a mat. One of my favorite brands of pilates is called Polestar pilates. You may want to check out their website at www.PolestarPilates.com to see if there is a center or studio near you. Stretching and Cooling Down Don't forget to stretch after any exercise routine (never before).

Product review: The pilates Allegro Reformer is a phenomenal machine for strength, flexibility and coordination training

Mike Adams, the Health Ranger
See article keywords and concepts
But this is no weight machine: due of the mechanics of pilates, some moves are harder to do when there is less resistance! (The resistance actually assists the move, so using less tension on the springs means using more tension in your own muscles.) The more resistance you have on the machine, the more assistance you are getting on certain exercises, so even a person with very poor abdominal strength can choose a level of resistance on the machine that makes it easy to go through the full range of motions for leg lifts, for example, whereas they would not be able to do this on their own.
Be aware that the Allegro pilates Reformer does require some assembly when purchased, and it is quite a large item to receive as a shipment. You'll need a fair amount of floor space to use it properly, so be sure you actually have the room available before you invest in the machine. Be prepared to do a little bit of assembly. If you have tall ceilings in your house, you can store it vertically and it only takes up a few square feet of floor space, but otherwise, it's quite long and can take up quite a lot of floor space.
You can purchase a video from pilates.com that shows you more. The only problem with the videos is that the levels one, two, and three basically show you all the same exercises with only minor variations. It's not worth buying all three. Just buy level one if you're a beginner, and you can probably figure out how to make the exercises more difficult on your own. I made the mistake of buying all three and ended up with a redundant supply of instructional videos.
You're training functional body strength. The pilates machine will never make you big and bulky like a bodybuilder. You will, however, get incredibly strong and functional muscles that can support your body and can help you move through day-to-day tasks with far less pain and far more strength and fluidity. Your whole body will be strengthened as a system and taught new ways to move. It's not about building bulky muscle mass. This is about real core strength that helps you function better.
The Allegro pilates Reformer is the Mercedes of reformers, and offers the performance of a finely engineered vehicle. Is it too much to spend on your own body? Many people balk at the idea of spending $2300 on exercise equipment, which I've always found interesting. People will spend $40,000 on a car, $500,000 on a house, or $100,000 on an education that largely turns out to be irrelevant to their profession.

See http://www.pilates.com/BBAPP/V/equipment/iq-reformer.html I found the instructions quite clear and the assembly straightforward, although it did take a couple of hours to get it all together and working correctly. Other than that, the unit comes with everything you need, including all the cables and straps. All are of a very high quality. I have yet to wear out a single piece on the unit, although the ropes are looking a bit worn at this point. Everything else on the machine seems like it will last for it decades even with repetitive use.

I'm a big fan of yoga, hiking, and pilates, but maybe you're better suited to water exercise and weight training, or maybe swing dancing, pushups, and sit-ups are more your speed. Maybe you'd rather shoot hoops with some friends for a half-hour, or jump up and down on a mini-trampoline in front of an afternoon talk show. If you think taking long walks is boring, get yourself a portable music player and listen to tunes or a book on tape while you stride. Yoga and pilates are wonderful because they promote an inward focus and help you to relax and be in the moment.

If trying to consciously let go and relax these areas isn't enough, try taking up yoga, T'ai chi, or pilates. Artificial meat would be a preferable alternative to the cruelty and environmental impact of factory farms

That includes even very active lifestyles like my own, which involve strength training, pilates, lots of running, martial arts and cycling. The bottom line is that I am a cautious supporter of this idea of artificial meat production because of the practicalities involved. People will continue to consume meat on the planet for the time being. If that is the case, then I believe that we are much better off having people consume artificial meat than tearing the flesh from living, breathing beings and calling that dinner.

Yoga and pilates are wonderful because they promote an inward focus and help you to relax and be in the moment. They help you to become more aware of your body and appreciative of its potential. Also, they enable you to carry out both aerobic and strength-building work at the same time. As important as it is to get your heart rate up, you also need to relax and release stress—especially if you're a Type A personality who never stops worrying and hurrying. Your state of mind holds huge sway over your body, and when you find ways to relax and enjoy life, your body becomes healthier.

In addition to the use of resistance bands, strength training can also be achieved through other practices, chiefly pilates and certain forms of yoga such as Ashtanga or Vinyasa flow. These practices engage multiple muscles (often with the body's own weight as resistance), increase circulation, and demand core strength. They also enhance flexibility, balance, coordination, and posture—all excellent goals for vibrant health. The core can be one of the more difficult areas to work, but strengthening the core is vital to maintaining good physical conditioning.

Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain

John J. Ratey, MD

Yoga, pilates, tai chi, martial arts, and dance all involve these skills, which are important to staying agile. Without balance and flexibility, your ability to stick with an aerobic and strength-training regimen will diminish. In lieu of an activity, you can do drills on an exercise ball, balance board, or Bosu, which is half a rubber ball that you stand on to challenge your core muscles. Remember Harold, the octogenarian skier? He trained on the Bosu for his most recent ski trip. MENTAL EXERCISE: KEEP LEARNING My advice here is to keep challenging your mind.
Learning the asanas of yoga, the positions of ballet, the skills of gymnastics, the elements of figure skating, the contortions of pilates, the forms of karate — all these practices engage nerve cells throughout the brain. Studies of dancers, for example, show that moving to an irregular rhythm versus a regular one improves brain plasticity. Because the skills involved in these activities are unnatural forms of movement, they serve as activity-dependent learning of the sort that made Hebb's rats smarter and that Greenough showed made synapses bushier.

For example, take a person who is a dancer or someone engaged in yoga, pilates or flexibility well into their 80s or 90s, and they won't have joint pain. If aging causes joint pain, then how is it that these people have no pain? The answer is because they keep mobilizing those joints, they keep using their body. They engage in Tai Chi or other gentle body movements. And they are free from pain. By the way, Tai Chi is another outstanding way to get range of motion, but it won't do quite the same thing for you in terms of muscle mass as pilates training or other weight bearing exercises.
