Numerous studies in the last several decades have confirmed that physical activity has a positive effect on longevity and mortality and that a lack of physical activity is associated with an increased risk of disease and disability. Regular physical activity helps to regulate Cortisol production, making it less likely that surging Cortisol levels will contribute to both a constant feeling of anxiety and an ever-expanding waistline. hormone-healthy habit: find a way to move

Exercise regularly
Regular exercise is an excellent habit that helps maintain overall fitness and muscle tone; recent findings now suggest a relationship between physical activity and a reduced risk of certain cancers, such as breast and colon cancers. Of course, regular physical activity reduces obesity, an important factor that increases the risk of cancer. Another study indicates that moderate physical activity (three to five hours of walking per week, for example) significantly reduces the risk of mortality in women diagnosed with breast cancer. |

As Lucas and Platts-Mills wrote: "The real question is whether prolonged physical activity and, in particular, outdoor play of children plays a role in prophylaxis against persistent wheezing. If so, the decrease in physical activity might have played a major role in recent increases in asthma prevalence and severity. |

The flow of lymph fluid can stagnate from dehydration, fatigue, infection, stress, or a lack of physical activity. This may result in lymphostatic edema, and as toxins accumulate various metabolic problems or infections may occur. One of the best ways to support lymphatic circulation and reduce lymphatic congestion is to increase physical activity. Enzymes can be used to improve digestion, support the immune system, improve absorption of critical fatty acids, and reduce inflammation that may occur in the elements of the lymphatic system. |

A study of 12,028 randomly selected individuals ages twenty to seventy-nine showed that increasing physical activity was associated with a 70% reduction in self-reported stress as well as a decrease in life dissatisfaction. Even two to four hours of walking per week was associated with significant improvements. Another study of a group of employees showed reductions in stress levels and depression, and improvements in feelings of health and vitality after a twenty-four-week program of aerobic exercise when compared to a control group. |

Water requirements vary according to body size, physical activity, air temperature, and sweating. It is generally recognized that a normal body requires about eight glasses of water each day, or about one half ounce for every pound (33 ml per kilogram) of body weight. The raw fruits and vegetables we eat supply some of the water in our diet, and the rest is made up in what we drink. If we feel thirsty often, this is an indication that we are dehydrated.
Both the color and the amount of urine produced are good indicators of whether we are drinking enough water or not. |

You will be able to assess the degree your airways are affected before and after physical activity and what progress you make over a period of time.
The severity of your condition determines how frequently you need to use a peak flow meter. Some may have to record their peak flow three times a day, but those with mild asthma need only take readings when symptoms are evident, for example during the pollen season or when exposed to allergens. Very little time is needed to take a reading and record it on a chart.

Normal physical activity can use at least three quarts (2.84 liters) of replacement water each day. Strenuous activity, a hot climate, or a high table salt diet increases this requirement.
When the body gets enough water it is able to work efficiently. Lack of proper hydration in body tissues is now recognized as a substantial factor in the aging process. Even dehydration of 1% to 2% can affect all functions of the body. |

He was always wheezing and any sporting or physical activity aggravated his asthma. His parents decided it was in his best interests not to do any physical activities at all. Andrew had natural athletic ability and desperately wanted to play sport—of any kind. He pestered his parents until, through a friend, they were recommended to Ron's clinic. After six months on the Controlled Pattern Breathing programme Andrew was able to enjoy ball games and participate in sporting activities, especially bike riding. |

Overuse may be promoted by a piece of mechanical equipment, but any job-related physical activity performed over and over again is capable of causing similar problems.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is presumed to be a modern disease, in part, because the name is new. In truth, the same syndrome has been around for a long while but has simply gone by many different names over time. A prime example of carpal tunnel syndrome by another name is seamstress's cramp. Seamstress's cramp was first described in the nineteenth century. Then, as now, this huge class of workers was predominantly female. |

Recent research shows that regular exercise can not only increase the ability of the brain to function, but it can actually increase its size. This was demonstrated recently in an intriguing study by Arthur Kramer, Ph.D., professor of neuro-science and psychology and director of the biomedical imaging center at the University of Illinois, and his colleagues. |

Interestingly, studies comparing physical activity (low, moderate, or high) in women found higher mortality in those engaged in high activity than those at moderate activity. In essence, what was important was being fit, and fitness can be obtained by moderate exercise.
More recently, the association between physical activity and fitness, and mortality from all causes, was confirmed in a study using twins.312 The value of the twin study was to reduce the influence of genetics in determining mortality, since identical twins share the same chromosomal pattern. |

Playing Sport
It is imperative that you start any sporting or physical activity slowly, building gradually to peak performance. Always warm up slowly and gradually. Your warm-up programme should take twice as long as non-asthmatics'. While warming up concentrate on breathing using the Controlled Pattern Breathing in Chapter 6.
Once you have warmed up thoroughly you can increase the pace of the exercise as long as your breathing pattern is able to keep up. Again, you should concentrate on breathing out as much as possible. |

Liver disease, thyroid disease, and other ailments can lead to increased levels of blood cholesterol.
• physical activity. More precisely, the lack of physical activity is linked to lower levels of HDL "good" cholesterol.
• Weight. Elevated LDL has also been linked to overweight and obesity.
You can't do anything about your gender or heredity, but many people have successfully lowered their cholesterol levels by changing their diet, increasing their exercise levels, and/or losing weight. |

However, weight gain remains an issue for the majority of my patients who are taking antidepressants and have had to greatly reduce their physical activity because of fatigue or pain. A major way to combat this is the program for gentle aerobic conditioning that I laid out in detail in the last chapter. The Natelson diet is the second arm of this treatment.
Exercise and diet lead to weight loss. Although the craze seems to be fading now, in recent years much of the United States was swept away by the high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet fad. |
| Some say to themselves, "I am going to cut way back on all my physical activity," while others say, "I am not going to do the type of activity that made me sick."
These are two very different responses. In the first, the person has become so frightened by the effects of exertion that he or she has decided to do much, much less. In the second example, the person realizes that certain activities carry a risk, but others may continue to be perfectly fine. |
| A day of vigorous physical activity without months of preparation at the gym is another common cause of achiness and fatigue. That's what bed rest and aspirin are for. But when your symptoms go on and on for days and the doctor finds no signs, the health-care system often begins to fail the patient. And two of the symptoms that often appear in the total absence of clear signs of disease are fatigue and pain. These are symptoms that everyone has experienced at one time or another, usually with an appropriate cause. |

The very good news is that these benefits can be enjoyed with a regular, moderate physical activity such as walking. It's easy to set and achieve goals when you exercise-walk, particularly with the help of a pedometer. In fact, research has demonstrated that walking is the chosen exercise among people who lose weight and subsequently maintain their healthy weight." Your goal on the SlimDown is to walk 30 minutes a day. (If you already do some form of exercise, terrific! Keep it up. Just make sure that you get in at least 30 minutes of whatever exercise you choose daily. |

Increase physical activity. Both weight loss and improved fitness have been associated with the reduced incidence of type 2 diabetes. And even if it doesn't result in weight loss, regular exercise seems to pay off. For the study participants who did not lose weight, tallying more than 4 hours of exercise a week was still associated wi:h significantly less diabetes risk.
