Daughton and Ternes wrote:
"One large class of chemicals receiving comparatively little attention comprises the pharmaceuticals and active ingredients in personal care products (PPCPs), which are used in large amounts throughout the world; quantities of many are on par with agrochemicals. Escalating introduction to the marketplace of new pharmaceuticals is adding exponentially to the already large array of chemical classes, each with distinct modes of biochemical action, many of which are poorly understood. |
| Pharmaceuticals are now an environmental pollutant
Some pharmaceuticals enter the water stream when consumers flush them down the toilet -- for years a common practice in discarding unneeded or expired medication. Earlier this year The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) jointly released new guidelines for disposing prescription drugs. |
| The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated its researchers have found pharmaceuticals and personal care products -- or PPCPs -- in nearly every water supply they have tested.
The issue is not new. In the United Kingdom, the dangers of PPCPs were first recognized in the 1970s. In the U.S., however, it was another twenty years before the scientific community began to take notice, largely in response to the efforts of one scientist, Christian Daughton. |
| The article "Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in the Environment: Agents of Subtle Change?" appeared in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.
This landmark article discussed how "priority pollutants," such as agrochemicals, were "only one piece of the larger puzzle" of human-made environmental risk factors. |
| Escalating introduction to the marketplace of new pharmaceuticals is adding exponentially to the already large array of chemical classes, each with distinct modes of biochemical action, many of which are poorly understood."
The authors went on to write that exposure to PPCPs, especially for aquatic organisms, may be more chronic than exposure to pesticides and other industrial chemicals "because PPCPS are constantly infused into the environment wherever humans live or visit. |
| Preliminary data have shown lipid-regulating compounds, such as Lipitor or Zocor, are causing fish to deposit fat into their eggs which might affect reproduction.
"Pharmaceuticals are designed for a very specific mode of action," lead scientist Rebecca Klaper stated. Klaper said some of the male minnows are "missing a few steps" as they prepare for mating.
Researchers are calling the pollutants "emerging contaminants." The term encompasses personal care products, prescription drugs, pesticides, and other substances, some of which are known to affect human hormone production. |

REPPED: I recently donned a disguise and was able to sneak into the pharmaceutical laboratory of ConPfuzer pharmaceuticals. After bribing a couple of low-grade lab technicians grumbling about the falling value of company stock options, I got my hands on a document revealing the secret recipe for the firm's next new wave of pharmaceuticals!
I openly share this with you in an effort to bring attention to what's actually going into these drugs. You'll be shocked! |

In fact, most pharmaceuticals cause damage to various organs of the body, including liver damage, heart damage, brain damage and kidney damage. Many pharmaceuticals cause heart attacks and strokes, and nearly all pharmaceuticals cause nutritional deficiencies that are almost never mentioned by doctors, drug companies or even the FDA. Furthermore, most drugs don't even work on most people. To be approved by the FDA, a pharmaceutical only has to demonstrate some effect on about five percent of those who take it. |

But they can't control the outcome of a jury of everyday people who finally woke up and saw the obvious: pharmaceuticals are killing us.
Pharmaceuticals are dangerous to your health
As I have written on this site, pharmaceuticals are in fact 16,400% more dangerous than terrorists. Even legal, FDA-approved pharmaceuticals kill 100,000 Americans each year. That dwarfs the number of Americans killed by terrorists, automobile accidents, murders, and all forms of violent crime combined. Modern medicine is, astoundingly, the fourth leading cause of death in this country. |

It's quite silly to pay $100 per pill to a pharmaceutical company when you can grow more effective and safer pharmaceuticals right in your own home, balcony, or backyard. In fact, the word "pharmaceutical" means "plant medicine." The word "pharma" has the same root used in the word "farming," of course. So medicines really do have their origins in plants. It's only through the atrocious politics of pharmaceutical companies today that people have forgotten the plant origins of medicine. |

For those who say how dare I compare terrorism to pharmaceuticals, I say, "How dare you consider these lives worthless and unworthy of news coverage just because they died quietly." I think the mainstream media is part of a great injustice taking place right now, an injustice that allows the ongoing operation of a system of medicine that kills a hundred thousand Americans each year, and yet goes virtually unreported.
In London, there were crimes committed against human beings. Yet in the pharmaceutical industry, crimes are being committed against all of humanity. Both are deplorable. |
| Now, before you whip out your keyboard and start to write me hate mail for daring to compare terrorism to pharmaceuticals, let me explain why this comparison is worth your attention. I agree it is despicable that people exist who would plant explosives for no purpose other than the killing of civilians. Any act of such violence and lack of regard for the value of human life is beyond reproach, even in a time of war.
And yet it is, in a different way, also despicable that we have a national press that would seize upon the suffering of these people as a way to sell more newspapers... |
| REPPED: Just days after we posted an article on the dangers of pharmaceuticals vs. terrorism, London was hit by a terrorist attack that left 37 dead and hundreds more wounded. Headlines around the world are ablaze with news of the event. National leaders are adamant in their efforts to track down and punish those responsible. Law enforcement resources are being mobilized on a global scale in an effort to avenge the deaths of these 37 Londoners.
Meanwhile, in the United States, over 270 people died the very same day. They didn't die from terrorist bombs or fiery explosions. |

Drug companies actually import many of the raw materials used in pharmaceuticals from other countries, meaning that some U.S. medicines are already sourced from countries like the U.K. and Germany.
Drug companies mark up their prescription drugs as much as 569,000% over the price of the raw materials. (A typical markup is more in the 30,000% - 50,000% range.) Retailing pharmaceuticals is hugely profitable. There is no business in the world with more profit built in to the retail price of the product. |

Because the fastest growing source of harzardous consumer products are, in fact, pharmaceuticals, and if the FDA admits it needs to start enforcing environmental safety in food and drug products, it would have to face up to the fact that medications are now a primary source of global pollution of rivers and oceans. (Take a guess what all those HRT drugs are causing down stream...)
So what about the EPA? Why doesn't the EPA regulate pharmaceuticals as environmental pollutants? |

It takes a real crook to argue that doctors, scientists and the general public should all be kept ignorant of the results of clinical trials on pharmaceuticals. The idea that only a corrupt, industry-influenced FDA should be the funnel for all "truth" about pharmaceuticals is blatantly deceptive. The FDA doesn't determine the truth, nor report it... it spins the truth! Click here to see the CounterThink cartoon: The FDA Ministry of Truth.
As stated in the Consumers Union press release:
Clinical drug trials often show potential safety problems or serious side effects of a medication. |

| It's heartbreaking to consider that pharmaceuticals have become the quick and easy solution to most health problems. Ironically, most of these "medicines" actually interfere with health. Side effects of common pharmaceuticals include weight gain, constipation, cancer, kidney disease, heart failure, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and many other ailments they're supposed to remedy.

It makes you wonder how any intelligent person can really trust pharmaceuticals, doesn't it?
The truth, of course, is that intelligent people don't take pharmaceuticals anymore. They've found healthier, natural alternatives that are safer, cheaper and far more effective, like turmeric root for cancer prevention, blueberries for cholesterol control and cinnamon for blood sugar control. They're adopted healthier lifestyles, turning to raw foods, juicing, superfoods and microalgae like spirulina and chlorella. |

Fact #2: Nearly all the consumption of pharmaceuticals today is a direct result of marketing to the public and covertly bribing physicians to write more prescriptions. There is very little drug consumption based on scientific merit.
Fact #3: No pharmaceuticals actually cure or resolve the underlying causes of disease. Even "successful" drugs only manage symptoms, usually at the cost of interfering with other physiological functions that will cause side effects down the road. There is no such thing as a drug without a side effect. |

This phenomenon is not limited to the United States; England got its first dose of this reality a few years ago when scientists looked at 12 pharmaceuticals thought to pose an environmental threat, including painkillers, antibiotics, and antidepressants, and found traces of these pharmaceuticals in both sewage waters and drinking water. They also found traces in the rivers downstream from sewage treatment plants. |
| Pharmaceutical chemicals are not regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency, so there is no enforced limit of pharmaceuticals in the drinking water. In fact, in the United States, there is no government agency that is even testing the level of pharmaceuticals in public drinking water on a regular basis. So it is possible, in fact likely, that these levels will continue to rise in the years ahead without being detected or reported to the public at all. I often think about the environmental impact of our culture's massive consumption levels of prescription drugs. |

The NewsTarget DrugWatch database aims to teach consumers how to protect themselves from the nutrient depletions caused by pharmaceuticals by compensating with nutrient supplementation through either foods or dietary supplements. When pharmaceuticals cause an accelerated loss of vitamins, minerals or other important nutrients, consumers can protect their health by either finding a natural way to end dependence on the pharmaceutical or by supplementing with the proper nutrients to avoid the inevitable onset of nutritional deficiency diseases. |
