For example, Americans tend to have a lot of pets. In fact, we are a pet-happy culture. We treat our pets very well, and we have a huge industry supporting and pampering pets. Sometimes we even treat our pets too well, and they get diabetes and obesity and heart disease because we're over feeding them. We like to reward our pets in the same way that we like to reward ourselves: with too much food.
It's not just pets that we pamper. We also have wonderful zoos in this country. |

The pet food industry claims to care about the health and welfare of our pets by providing complete and balanced diets. It is apparent from the ingredients used in these foods that they are nutritionally devoid of healthy and wholesome ingredients. In my opinion, the vitamin and mineral supplements, which are added to make up for what is lacking in the foods, are also inferior. We simply cannot expect our animal companions to enjoy good health and a long life if we feed them a garbage diet. |

Companion Animals in Pet Food
A
_Z Jls this new edition of Food pets Die For goes to press in the winter of 2002,1 still have no doubt that the carcasses of cats and dogs continue to be rendered into product used in many commercial pet foods. It is clear, not only by the research I have conducted, but also by recent independent media investigations that dog and cat carcasses are in many commercial pet foods.
Pet food companies deny that any of their products contain rendered companion animals. |
| These minerals can, in some cases, cause serious health problems for pets, particularly if you happen to get a bag of food that has an inordinate amount of minerals added. This was how my dogs initially got sick in 1990. I had the dry dog food tested at an independent lab, and the test results showed a zinc level twenty times higher than the daily recommended dose. Veterinarians versed in toxicology whom I contacted explained that zinc levels in excess of 1,000 parts per million (ppm) can be toxic for dogs. The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for dogs is approximately 50 mg. per day. |
| Since writing the original edition of Food pets Die For in 1997 and exposing what goes into those attractive cans and bags of commercial pet food, a growing number of consumers are realizing that many of the claims made by commercial pet food companies about their products being "balanced and nutritional" are false.
While researching and writing, there were times that I was absolutely horrified with what I discovered. |
| The document described how the pets were being disposed of by this facility. Unless it was "specially requested," and "paid to be cremated by their owners or by the veterinary clinic," these animals were rendered.
I checked back with Canadian veterinarians and found that not one of them was paying extra to have animals cremated. The standard fee (from $20 Canadian and more, depending on the size of the animal) was only for the disposal of the animal and this fee did not include cremation. Again, depending on the size of the animal, cremation could be an additional $20 Canadian and up. |
| What has kept me going is the hope that pet owners will read my findings and be convinced that their pets' health is directly related to what they eat—and that most commercial pet foods are garbage.
In 1990 after the illness of my two large dogs, Louie, a Saint Bernard, and Charlie, a Newfoundland, I began to ask questions about the ingredients in commercial pet foods and the manufacturers. I quickly learned that this is a multi-billion dollar industry that operates with virtually no government regulations and in many ways is self-regulated. |

Mike: Again, this is the pet food I have been purchasing for my dog, a Rottweiler mix. In case this testimonial sounds like an infomercial, it isn't. No money has been exchanged here. I haven't been given any free pet food, either.
Newman: Remember, we don't put a lot of money into marketing.
Mike: Exactly. People know my style. |

| It creates bloating and heart conditions in pets, just as it does in humans. When you're using the kelp, you're getting a more balanced sodium dose through the kelp. It is more natural for the body to maintain homeostasis.
Mike: Garlic powder is an interesting ingredient to see.
Newman: It helps with digestion and helps keep away fleas and ticks. I stay away from yeast. You'll never find yeast in my foods, except for one whole food supplement that we have. For those who are purists, we supplement yeast for the B vitamin supplement. You should not have yeast in your dog food. |

When you look at pets, there is a direct relationship between foods and disease that is quite apparent. Part of the reason this is so apparent is because pets age much more quickly than human beings. Of course, we're all familiar with the phrase "dog years" and the idea that dogs age approximately seven times faster than human beings. This allows you to notice the relationship between nutrition and health seven times more quickly in your dogs than you might notice it in yourself or in your family. |

Pets can open your heart and make you feel better about yourself. They have been known to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of suffering a heart attack. This is called "pet therapy." Psychiatrists have added pet therapy to their treatment repertoire. Therapy pets are now are used in schools, mental institutions, nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities and children's hospitals.

If you feed your pets lots of white rice for example, you will end up giving them diabetes. In fact, if you're asking a veterinarian who has been practicing for twenty or thirty years, they will tell you that they have recently seen a skyrocketing increase in the number of cases of diabetes in dogs. That's due to changes in the nutritional makeup of cheaper dog food products today that are using a lot of white rice as a filler (because white rice is cheap and makes the dog foods more profitable). |
| REPPED: Veterinarians know far more about nutrition than most doctors. pets generally don't have health insurance, and it's much cheaper to prevent disease in your pet through good nutrition than it is to treat it with drugs and surgery down the road. Veterinarians both understand good nutrition and preach it to their customers. Veterinarians also understand the direct correlation between the foods a pet eats and the chronic diseases they will exhibit. |

Shampoo pets on a regular basis to reduce pet dander. Humidifiers can be used in a dry climate, as they will help to moisturize the respiratory system. Too much humidity however, can cause more problems. The optimum level is about 35%.
Nasal washes: Using saline (saltwater) made from 1 tsp of salt to each pint of distilled warm water is an inexpensive and effective treatment. Sniff a small amount of the saline water into the nostrils one at a time and blow your nose. A syringe can also be used as can a nasal spray. |

By regularly shutting out much-needed UV light (even children and some pets are given sunglasses to wear nowadays), the eyes are unable to properly repair themselves and replace worn out eye cells. The increased incidence of blindness and eye diseases in the industrialized world may result, to a large extent, from the misinformation that the sun is dangerous. Please be aware that in sunny parts of the world almost everyone wears sunglasses nowadays. This may very well account for the increase of cataracts in these places. |

He counted the huge number of leaves his new pets drew into their burrows as edible insulation. Tearing leaves into small pieces and partially digesting them, worms mixed organic matter with fine earth they had already ingested.
Darwin noticed that in addition to grinding up leaves, worms break small rocks down into mineral soil. When dissecting worm gizzards, he almost always found small rocks and grains of sand. |

Loving touch opens the heart. It is the kind of touch that gives without expecting anything in return. It is the kind of touch that can create miracles. Each one of us has this healing gift; it is only a matter of acknowledging that you have it, which is a prerequisite for being able to use it. Give your touch freely and without reservations, for it is one of the few gifts that can make you truly happy, too. |
| They examined a prescription database that included information on 13,116 children and compared incidence of asthma with a variety of risk factors that besides antibiotics included, gender, maternal asthma history, living location, neighborhood income, the presence of pets in the home and the number of siblings at the age of seven.
The higher the number of antibiotic treatments, the higher the incidence of asthma, according to the study. The researchers also found that 87 percent of children who had received antibiotics were treated for respiratory tract infections. |

I realized a lot of the people coming in had pets that had similar symptoms to them.
I discovered our pets tend to develop the same diseases we do. It is a very interesting irony. They would come in and say, "You helped me so much with my allergies. My dog has just been diagnosed with allergies; can you help? My cat has cancer; is there anything you can do?" So, I said to myself, "There is really no one concentrating on animal care, especially in Arizona." I was the first person in Arizona to focus on it. There weren't a lot of consultants around the country doing it. |

It's often difficult for depressed people to make new friends and expand their social support networks. Yet pets are accepting of people who are depressed, seriously ill with cancer, or healthy. Having a pet helps you to create a bond with another living creature, and the benefits are often described as "miraculous." Dogs especially are social creatures and, when treated with kindness, return loyalty, affection, and playfulness.

The lab rules were loose in those days, and apparently Hebb thought it would be fine if he brought some lab rats home as temporary pets for his children. The arrangement turned out to be mutually beneficial: When he returned the rats to the lab, Hebb noticed that compared to their cage-bound peers, they excelled in learning tests. The novel experience of being handled and toyed with somehow improved their learning ability, which Hebb interpreted to mean that it changed their brains. |

Cancer researchers spend too much time studying disease and too little studying health. Too much time is spent trying to kill cancer cells rather than healing the body. Too many resources are spent attempting to treat cancer once it occurs rather than understanding the dynamics of how the human body keeps cancer in check. |

Contrary to popular belief, they are not carried by household pets. The white, thread-like worms are about 0.4 inches (1 cm) long and live in the bowel. They move outside to the anal area and the female worms lay their eggs around the anus, which then becomes irritated and itchy. This causes an infected person to scratch the area, transferring the eggs to the fingers and then possibly into the mouth. Both children and adults can be affected, although it is mostly found in and passed on through children. You can sometimes see pinworms in your child's stools or on his or her bottom. |
| Triggers and irritants include pollen, pets' fur and dander, the house dust mite, molds, certain foods, and chemicals in household products. Weak digestion, poor nutrition, or poor general health can also trigger attacks, as how your body handles rhinitis is linked to the strength of your immune system. The inhalation of airborne irritants prompts an exaggerated response of the immune system, which forms antibodies to fight against invaders. This triggers the release of histamine, which causes inflammation and mucus production in the nasal passages. Hay fever sufferers (see p. |
