Mike Adams, the Health Ranger See article keywords and concepts | As many readers of this site know, in addition to writing these feature articles, I'm also the president of one of the top permission email software companies in the industry, ArialSoftware.com. Since 1993, I've fought against spam, I've worked to create email sender certification solutions (like www.Relemail.com) and I've even created webmaster tools to help small businesses and non-profits build their in-house permission email lists (Zeop.com). And that's why I laughed my head off when I received the following spam email today from John Lozzi of Listrak. | | Well, first off there's the fact that here's a company claiming to offer permission email services that spammed me. All by itself, that's pretty funny. But there's more: the second hilarious fact is that they obviously didn't bother to even look at the email addresses they were sending to because I received this on the arialsoftware.com domain, and everybody in the industry knows that Arial Software sells permission email marketing automation software. | Mike Adams, the Health Ranger See article keywords and concepts | I am the president of a software company that's focused on permission email marketing software. I've seen the problems and trends in this industry.
My personal belief is that we're going to require a global system of sender authentication. I regret saying that, because I think it's going to add a layer of bureaucracy to the internet and ultimately make it less free. Freedom is very, very important, especially in terms of online speech. But this problem is becoming so serious that we are looking at a situation where we need to know who is sending email. | Mike Adams, the Health Ranger See article keywords and concepts | I know you cover a lot of areas of online marketing -- search engine optimization, landing pages and so on -- but today I would like to focus on email marketing, and specifically permission email marketing and maybe get into some spam issues as well. Let me start by asking you a question that keeps shifting around on all of us in the industry: Plain text or html? What is your answer today?
Wilson: Well, I think the ultimate answer is to let the recipient decide which of the two they prefer and then send them their preference. | Mike Adams, the Health Ranger See article keywords and concepts | I've even created webmaster tools to help small businesses and non-profits build their in-house permission email lists (Zeop.com). And that's why I laughed my head off when I received the following spam email today from John Lozzi of Listrak.com:
Mike,
I hope that you can point me in the right direction.
We help firms and agencies maximize the effectiveness of their email campaigns.
Listrak is a web based email campaign management tool that allows you to cost effectively create, deploy, manage, and gain marketing intelligence through real time message activity reports. | | In other words, this is a classic example of a company (Listrak) claiming to be involved in permission email marketing but which is running around spamming their own competitors with unsolicited email messages in an effort to drum up new business!
And the funniest part of all is that John Lozzi obviously didn't realize I'm a feature writer for a news network that was going to post his spammy email across the internet for the amusement of people everywhere. What can I say? ROTFL!
John, you spammed the wrong guy today. But keep 'em coming, please. Laughter is good medicine. |
