Best to stay away if you're having—or expecting—an outbreak. And if you want the therapeutic benefits of lysine for the prevention or control of herpes, it's best to take supplements. You're just not going to get nearly enough from food alone.
Everyday Prevention
Like many conditions discussed in this book, herpes has a very intimate relationship with stress. Stress makes it worse. A lot worse. Stress can actually bring on an outbreak, and it can certainly make an existing one worse. Reducing stress is one of the best things you can do for yourself if you want to keep outbreaks to a minimum. |

Valacyclovir has a variety of dosing recommendations: For an initial outbreak of genital herpes, use 1,000 mg three times a day for 10 days. For recurrent outbreaks, use 500 mg twice daily for 5 days. For suppression, use 500 mg per day. For oral herpes, the recommendation is 2 g in the morning and 2 g in the evening on one day only. For recurrent outbreaks, many practitioners prescribe the 1,000 mg caplet and suggest that patients cut it in half for economic reasons and take one half caplet twice daily. |

Ten days ago health chiefs warned parents that Britain could face a measles outbreak unless more had their children vaccinated with MMR. Professor Wakefield said, however, that if an outbreak were to erupt it would be the fault of the health department, which had "failed to address the safety issues."
The doctor and his colleagues are testing the hypothesis that the measles virus from the vaccine can lodge in the gut of susceptible children, damaging the bowel and causing autism, and that the addition of the mumps virus makes that more likely. |

In addition, the United States, like the United Kingdom, stopped using solvents as a regular part of the rendering process, which some scientists theorize could be related to the BSE outbreak in the United Kingdom. According to a report from the BSE Inquiry, "By 1970, most of the solvent extraction plants in the U.S. had blown up, burned down, or closed for safety."12
Basically, the United States was left wide open for a BSE outbreak. By 1985, renderers were still rendering sheep heads, solvents were no longer a part of U.S. rendering, and very few cattle were being tested for BSE. |

And while we're talking about prevention, keep in mind that using lysine as a preventive measure against cold sores without strengthening the overall immune system is a little like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. The stronger your immune system, the less chance that the herpes virus will reemerge to wreak havoc on your social life. |

During a mass outbreak near Glasgow, 16 out of over 200 infected people died from the consequences of eating E. coli contaminated meat. Frequent outbreaks are reported in Scotland and many other parts of the world. More than half a million Americans, most of them children, have been sickened by mutant fecal bacteria (E. coli) in meat. These germs are the leading cause of kidney failure among children in the United States. This fact alone should prompt every responsible parent to prevent their children from eating flesh foods.
Not all parasites act so swiftly as E. coli though. |

Even if you've been fortunate enough never to have an outbreak of genital herpes, you've probably experienced a plain old garden-variety cold sore. And if you have, you've probably gone on the inevitable quest to find something— anything—that will make it go away: licorice root, homeopathic medicines, vitamin megadoses, avoiding the sun, and any technique that reduces stress. They're all good and can help control an outbreak when it happens. But for true prevention you may want to consider some immune-enhancing strategies, and you might especially want to consider lysine. |

The first indication of a herpes zoster outbreak is excessive sensitivity in the affected area of skin, soon followed by pain, and then (after about five days) a rash, which may leave scars after crusting.
People who have herpes zoster should see a doctor immediately. Additional recommendations include reducing dietary toxicity, reducing emorional and environmental stress, and using enzymes to provide optimum support of the immune and digestive systems, balance pH levels, and reduce inflammation and pain during the outbreak of the rash. |

Let's look at how this would apply to a cholera outbreak. According to Ewald's theory, the virulence of a cholera outbreak in a given population should be directly related to the quality and safety of that population's water supply. If sewage flows easily into rivers that people wash in or drink from, then the cholera strain would evolve toward virulence—it can multiply freely, essentially using up its hosts, relying on its access to the water supply for transmission. |

When an outbreak occurred, the dosage was increased to 800 to 1,000 mg per day. Foods high in L-arginine (nuts, seeds, and chocolate) were also restricted. L-lysine treatment accelerated the recovery from acute outbreaks and reduced the frequency of recurrences.4 In a double-blind study of patients with herpes simplex outbreaks, supplementing with approximately 1,200 mg of L-lysine per day significantly reduced the recurrence rate. |

With this episodic reactivation, the virus migrates from the ganglia along the sensory nerves to the target site, which results in either an actual outbreak or a shedding without an outbreak or with atypical symptoms, called subclinical shedding.1-3 In fact, the majority of primary infections with HSV-1 and HSV-2 are subclinical. This presents a great difficulty in sexual transmission, because the virus can be transmitted to another, even when you do not know you are infected or have ever been infected. Men are more likely to have asymptomatic HSV-2 infections than women. |
| One or two capsules daily of the leaf resin may reduce the frequency of outbreaks, and the topical lotion, when applied at the first sign of a tingling sensation, may prevent the outbreak from occurring.
Botanicals such as thuja {Thuja occidentalis), lomatium {Lomatium disectum), and astragalus {Astragalus spp.) have been traditionally used by naturopathic physicians, herbalists, and other health-care practitioners to support the body's immune system and to defend against the effects of disease-causing viral infections. |

In 1976 an extensive flu vaccination program in America led to a massive outbreak of Guillain-Barre syndrome, a disease affecting the nervous system. The outbreak, known as the "Great Swine Flue Fiasco," paralyzed 656 people and 30 elderly persons were found dead within hours after they were vaccinated. Compensation claims were enormous, which slowed down the program but only for a while.
Seniors, of course, are one of the core target groups for the flu vaccine program. So every year we're told how older people are particularly vulnerable to the flu. |

But Tamiflu will be all but useless if an outbreak occurs. Not because it doesn't work – it actually does have antiviral properties – but because you have to take a Tamiflu pill every day. Thus, if you have 100,000 pills you can really only treat 1,000 people for 100 days. Clearly you would need hundreds of millions of these pills if you were planning on treating the entire U.S. population in some kind of avian bird flu outbreak. Also, Tamiflu isn't necessarily effective against the H5N1 bird flu virus. It wasn't designed for that. |

| This plan will serve as our road map on how we, as a nation and as a member of the global health community, respond to the next pandemic influenza outbreak, whenever that may be," he said at the time.
Recently, the US has been stockpiling flu vaccines, yet these are not likely to be of much help. Influenza (and other viruses) constantly change their structure just enough so that the immune system doesn't recognize them. The mutation of viruses makes it difficult for manufacturers to predict which flu strain (out of the many hundreds) will make its way to the US. |

The most likely origin of the European outbreak is thought to be a fleet of Genoese trading ships that docked in Messina, Italy, in the fall of 1347. By the time the ships reached port, most of the crews were already dead or dying. Some of the ships never even made it to port, running aground along the coast after the last of their crew became too sick to steer the ship. Looters preyed on the wrecks and got a lot more than they bargained for—and so did just about everyone they encountered as they carried the plague to land. |

Like the small contained "Avian flu" outbreaks occurring in China in 2004 and 2005, a small, contained "swine flu" outbreak (which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] investigated and confirmed had been caused by a swine-type influenza A virus) occurred in the U.S. in February of 1976 at Fort Dix in New Jersey.
Like the current "sky is falling" reaction, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, as well as numerous medical experts, became concerned that a major flu epidemic was imminent for the coming fall. |

One preliminary study treated people (four of whom had genital herpes) with a 4% zinc sulfate solution applied to the site of the initial outbreak.9 In all cases, the pain, burning, and tingling stopped within 24 hours of beginning the topical zinc therapy. The use of lower concentrations of zinc (0.025-0.05%) has also been shown effective against oral and genital herpes outbreaks.10,11 While topical zinc has been shown to be helpful, there is no convincing evidence that oral zinc offers the same benefits. |

A. M. Cohen's 1960 study of Yemenite Jews showed a low incidence of diabetes in Yemen with a general diet that was high in fat and protein, and with one of the two lowest sugar intakes in the world. |

Immunocompromise or overuse of antibiotics can cause an outbreak of Candida. Aspergillosis, cryptococcosis, and the other fungal infections occur in immunocompromised individuals, like patients with HIV, in whom they may be life threatening, and therefore are beyond the scope of this book.
Antifungals used to treat aspergillosis, blastomycosis, candidiasis, cryptococcosis, and histoplasmosis are polyene drugs, like amphotericin B, gris-eofulvin, and nystatin, which bind themselves to membrane sterols in fungal cell membranes, causing cell death. |

The 1918 outbreak was directly linked with the Great War (World War 1). The influenza A virus strain of subtype H1N1 behind the flu pandemic was unusually severe and deadly. What made it that way? At no time in history was the world exposed to such massive and 24-hour pollution created by the fumes and smoke resulting from continuous bomb and grenade explosions, the burning of entire cities, the effects of mustard gases and other biological weapons by Germans. Nobody remained uninfluenced by it. |
| Yet no scientist in the world would use these facts to announce a mass outbreak of viral epidemics. Every experienced virologist knows that all these viruses are dormant, i.e., have been neutralized by the immune system. He also knows that this makes the infected people immune against re-infection, unless of course the immune system is damaged or suppressed through other factors.
If HIV, herpes, and all the other types of viruses that are latent in humans and animals living on the planet were capable of killing people, there would hardly be anyone left to treat the billions of sufferers. |
