The Autoimmune Epidemic

Donna Jackson Nakazawa

Oscar winners lived four years longer than the other two groups, with study authors concluding that winning an Oscar may lead to increased feelings of optimism and mastery that influence health throughout the rest of one's life. Of course one might well ask: Did winning an Oscar lead to more optimism and better health, or did feelings of optimism and mastery lead to being a better actor, making these actors more likely to take home an Oscar?

The Secret History of the War on Cancer

Devra Davis

A combination of optimism about the industrial future, bona fide improvements in the ability to see and grasp the basic biology of disease, and darker forces fueling that optimism guaranteed that the burden of proving any modern activity caused cancer would become impossibly heavy. The search for more scientific information easily morphed into a reason to reject what had once been known. 1 he reason I know Percival Pott's young chimney sweeps would have had a hard time in a modern courtroom is that in 2000 I participated in a case that was eerily equivalent.

He also reminds us that optimism heals: 'A study of nearly 1,000 older adults followed for nine years concluded that people with high levels of optimism had a 23% lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease and a 55% lower risk of death from all causes compared to their more pessimistic peers." Positive older people also have better memories and stay healthier. Overall physical fitness is reflected in walking speed; positive elders were found to walk 9% faster than negative ones.39 Neurosurgeon Norman Shealy M.D., Ph.D.

Financial Armageddon: Protecting Your Future from Four Impending Catastrophes

Michael J. Panzner

The carefree spending and boundless optimism of earlier decades must, as a matter of course, be replaced by discretion, deliberation, and diligence. Instead of living for today and forgetting about tomorrow, or borrowing too much and saving too little, Americans will have to hunker down and steel themselves for a protracted period of hardship and suffering. With the economic pie shrinking fast, it will be a time to think small; to simplify, consolidate, and downsize; and to weed out anything that might, in one way or another, be unnecessary or even a threat to survival.
The United States had not seen a bone jarring, consumer-led recession for 15 years, and one could argue that the optimism was justified. Why prepare for the worst by saving more or borrowing less if the occasional downdraft is unlikely to last long? Ever-growing investment returns, an endless housing boom, and the Federal Reserve had conditioned Americans to believe that, inevitable good fortune would eventually bail them out—should it even prove necessary. The financial system had also undergone revolutionary change, both in attitudes about credit and in the way the lending process worked.
Even more interesting, they changed their behavior when optimism was high, stock and bond market volatility was low, large financial hiccups had all but disappeared, and economic conditions were widely perceived to be in a Goldilocks state—not too hot, not too cold, butjust right. Nonetheless, as with silent dogs— or cats, perhaps—something clearly was amiss.
In many respects, the mood in early 2006 was akin to the optimism that existed in the immediate aftermath of the 1929 stock market crash—Just before the economy fell into a multiyear tail-spin. As BusinessWeek noted in a look-back feature article, "The horror of [that] period was heightened by [the] failure of most Americans, in the early months, to realize how bad it would be.
The social fabric will be torn apart as optimism fades; joblessness soars; economic activity wanes; resources are stretched to the breaking point; and cutbacks in spending on law enforcement, social services, and other safety nets fuel desperation and despair. Much antisocial behavior will likely stem from an urge to satisfy basic needs, including food, adequate shelter, and health care. But it will also reflect the stress of coping with constant fear and uncertainty.

Nutrition Some foods and beverages seem to exacerbate symptoms for many women. Although not fully investigated, about 53 percent of patients with IC associate a flare-up of their symptoms with dietary influences, especially citrus fruits and other acidic foods and beverages.2 Many women find it helpful to avoid certain foods. If you avoid these foods for two weeks and your symptoms improve, this is good news for the bladder.

Choose the response that most applies to you by circling either A or B. Ignore the letter and number codes for now; they will be explained later. 1. So serotonin kicks in to block hopelessness, then dopamine is secreted to help produce beliefs that involve optimism and hope. Incidentally, there is new evidence that addicts have less dopamine receptors than normal. Early trauma may destabilize the dopamine set-points and produce interalia, anhedonia—the inability to enjoy anything. Even a carrying mother's use of tranquilizers can accomplish that. In the 1940s and 50s we tried to talk patients out of their bizarre ideas because we thought it was mental illness. So we used mental techniques.

Hope and optimism, so essential to this fight, have masked some very real systemic problems that have made this complex, elusive, relentless foe even harder to defeat. The result is that while there have been substantial achievements since the crusade began with the National Cancer Act in 1971, we are far from winning the war. So far away, in fact, that it looks like losing. Living longer? The National Cancer Institute just issued a news release claiming modest drops in cancer rates, just prior to the publication of this book.

Bezwoda's paper and Peters's boundless optimism gave transplanters reason to keep performing the procedure. But Bezwoda's paper would turn out to be a fraud. When a team of cancer specialists from Washington, DC, traveled to South Africa to audit Bezwoda's data in 2000, they discovered a jumble of incomplete records, missing patients, and deviations from standard scientific practice. Out of 1 C4 patients reported in his paper, Bezwoda had charts for only sixty-two cases. Medical researchers are required by scientific convention to keep meticulous records when they conduct clinical trials.

Preventing a substantial decline in food production once we exhaust fossil fuels will require radically restructuring agriculture to sustain soil fertility, or developing massive new sources of cheap energy if we continue to rely on chemical fertilizers. But the future is clear if we conrinue to erode the soil itself.
