People tend to make a big mistake when they consume macadamia nuts, though, because they buy roasted nuts, salted nuts or sweetened nuts. A lot of nut mixes are actually made with monosodium glutamate, a chemical taste enhancer that causes damage to the nervous system. So it's easy to go wrong when buying and consuming nuts. If you're going to eat nuts, eat them raw with no salt, no sugar, and no additives. You might have to visit a health food store or a food co-op in order to find raw nuts. |

Although the nuts are not certified organic, the owners of the farm informed me they don't use any chemical herbicides or pesticides, and they keep the mac nut farm is a very natural state (I've visited the farm twice and saw it myself).
South Kona Macs has over 350 macadamia nut trees, and they harvest and process them in a unique way using their own special nut cracking and drying technology. It's the lowest temperature drying technology on the island, and the dried mac nuts come out as close to raw as you can possibly get in a dried mac nut. |
| Right now, in fact, when Hawaiian mac nut processors even offer to buy the nuts from local farmers, the dollar amount offered amounts to a net loss to the farmer. The small guys can only stay in business by selling direct to consumers.
That's why I say don't buy your mac nuts from a big, brand-name food company. Buy 'em directly from the people who grow them. My advice is the same for other specialty food items. |
| Most farms dry their nuts by roasting them, which of course "cooks" the nut and destroys some of its nutritional value.)
Enjoy your mac nuts! I hope to bring you more articles about health products from Hawaii, including noni, spirulina, kava kava and even a story about how the war on marijuana has caused an escalation in the use of meth on across the islands. Stay tuned to NewsTarget for more honest, independent reporting on topics like these.
If you know of another good mac nut farm that consumers may want to contact, you may list their URL in the comments section of this article. |
| There is a great disparity between the prices that the farmers are paid for the nuts versus what consumers are paying for them. All that profit goes to the big corporations that monopolize the processing and the retailing of these products, leaving the local mac nut farmer out to dry. That's why we should buy these macadamia nuts directly. Support your local farmer, and keep the big food corporations out of the transaction.
The end of Hawaii's mac nut industry?
If something doesn't change in Hawaii soon, its local farmer mac nut industry could be all but wiped out in a matter of years. |

Add a selection of haricot, kidney or soya beans to your diet, and nuts such as walnuts, almonds and brazil nuts (peanuts and cashews are not as useful), for a varied combination of EFAs in your diet. EFA supplies in the body are depleted by eating processed foods, cigarette smoke, alcohol and pollution. You should be aware that margarine from polyunsaturated oils that have been hydrogenated to solidify them does not contain EFAs.

Lean red meats
4 ounces
Limit to once per week.
Calcium
/ EAT 2 SERVINGS EVERY DAY.
The body's need for calcium becomes increasingly pertinent for women and men as they age. Human bones replace about one-fifth of their total calcium each year, and there is a constant movement of calcium in and out of the bones, both for repair and to maintain a constant level of calcium in the blood and in other body fluids. |

Soap nuts replace all commercial laundry detergents with a 100% natural laundry soap grown by Mother Nature. They contain absolutely no synthetic chemicals or additives, and they're sustainably harvested in countries like Indonesia, India and Taiwan. The soap contained in the shell of the soap berry is highly concentrated: Just two or three soap nut shells cleans an entire load of laundry. The saponins also naturally exhibit antibacterial and antifungal properties, leading to fresh, clean smelling clothes without the need for artificial fragrance chemicals. |

Since some people are allergic to Brazil nuts, the company had the soybean tested for allergenicity.
"I didn't think we'd find anything interesting,"3 said scientist Steve Taylor, who figured that Brazil nuts produce thousands of proteins. The chances were quite small that the one created by the inserted gene was allergenic. Nonetheless, three separate tests (radioallergosorbent testing, immunoblotting, and skin-prick testing) all demonstrated that the soy did in fact cause reactions in people allergic to Brazil nuts. |

Those who have heart disease should avoid all nuts. Those without disease can consume walnuts in moderation because they can provide considerable omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for many essential bodily functions. But I am extremely wary of nuts. Although short-term studies funded by nut companies show that they may positively affect good and bad cholesterol, I know of no long-term studies indicating that they can arrest and reverse heart disease, and patients may easily overingest them, elevating their cholesterol levels. |

More severe anaphylaxis (a sudden, severe, potentially fatal systemic allergic reaction that can involve the skin, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, and cardiovascular system) can occur after eating nuts, shellfish, fish, peanuts, and tree nuts. A second type of food allergy—known as a T-cell mediated allergy—occurs when T cells within the intestinal mucosa see a food as foreign and the immune system reacts to the presence of that food. T-cell mediated food allergies—which are more common in children—usually occur four to twenty-eight hours after ingestion of a food. |

Risk was reduced by 1 6 percent in women who ate 1 to 4 ounces of nuts per week and by 8 percent among those who ate less than 1 ounce per week. Experts believe that the healthy fats in nuts allow the body to use insulin more efficiently and help regulate blood glucose levels. Women who frequently ate peanut butter (although peanuts are technically a legume, not a nut) reduced their risk of type 2 diabetes by nearly 20 percent compared with women who rarely ate peanut butter.

When you purchase these soap nuts and put them to use, you're not only protecting your health and the environment, you're also supporting the families in India and Indonesia that sustainably harvest these nuts as a way of life. Remember how I'm always urging us all to "vote with our dollars?" This is the perfect opportunity to do so. Vote against the chemical laundry companies and vote FOR natural, tree-grown laundry products by switching to soap nuts!
This is the "miracle" laundry product made by Mother Nature that I've been looking for. |

Soap nuts can replace all brand-name detergents
Even though these soap nuts have been used for hundreds of years in India and Indonesia, they're barely known in the western world where brand-name chemical detergents are heavily marketed to consumers through advertising, coupons and in-store displays. |

Asthma can be triggered by eating nuts like peanuts, cashews or walnuts, and dairy produce, eggs and yeast products. Fish, especially seafood, tomatoes and spices are also known triggers for some people. Anything manufactured that contains additives is of course suspect: biscuits, potato chips, cakes, aerated drinks, cordials and ice cream may all cause asthma. You can probably add your own triggers to this list. |

It appeared that someone had replaced the lug nuts on the wheel with much smaller lug nuts so that the front wheel at high speeds would fly off the vehicle, thus causing an accident, severe injuries to myself, or even death. Did someone actually change the lug nuts, or was this just a mistake when I purchased the vehicle? When I purchased the vehicle I had the car fully inspected. Was not noticing the difference in lug nuts on the front right wheel simply an oversight on our part, or was it deliberately done? We may never know. |

| To Kabinana went off alone, climbed a coconut tree that had light yellow nuts, picked two that were still unripe, and threw them to the ground; they broke and became two handsome women. To Karvuvu admired the women and asked how his brother had come by them. "Climb a coconut tree," To Kabinana said, "pick two unripe nuts, and throw them to the ground." But To Karvuvu threw the nuts point downward, and the women who came from them had flat ugly noses.57
One day To Kabinana carved a Thum-fish out of wood and let it swim off into the ocean, so that it should be a living fish forever after. |

Mike: What about going to some other kinds of nuts? You don’t use macadamia nuts in the bars at the moment, do you?
Lara: You know, I don't use macadamia nuts, and certainly, we're open to using different types of nuts. So as we look at new flavors for instance, we look at different combinations and things like that. So we certainly aren't going to limit it just to you know, almonds, walnuts, and cashews.
Mike: Well, let me put in my vote for the Tropical bar, the Tropical Larabar.
Lara: Thank you for the recommendation! |

The most healthful are walnuts and almonds because they derive fewer calories from fat than other nuts and they supply lots of vitamins and minerals. By comparison, Brazil nuts, pecans, and pistachios are high in fat. Cashews, macadamias, and pignoli (pine nuts) are even worse. Eat them only on occasion, and only in very small amounts.
Don't forget flaxseeds, which when ground up are a wonderful source of omega-3 essential fatty acids. And sesame seeds contain less common amino acids that help to round out and complete the proteins from other foods.

Hopefully, some grocery product manufacturer will soon come out with a margarine product based on macadamia nut oil. The perfect margarine would have coconut oil, macadamia nut oil and butter flavor, whipped into the texture of margarine. That would be quite heart-healthy and have no trans-fatty acids whatsoever. |

Do not eat any nuts (although if you have no heart disease, you can occasionally have walnuts).
10. Do not eat avocados. That includes guacamole!
11. Do not eat coconut.
12. Eat soy products cautiously. Many are highly processed and high in fat. Use "light" tofu. Avoid soy cheese, which almost always contains oil and casein.
13. Read The China Study, by T. Colin Campbell with Thomas M. Campbell II (BenBella Books).

Research suggests that omega-6 fatty acids (found in cereals, some nuts, whole grains, and vegetable oils) can be harmful to us if we don't have the proper ratio of omega-3 (found in oily fish, walnuts, certain algae, and flax) to counterbalance those fats and provide a protective effect against heart disease. The ideal ratio: Omega-3s, especially DHA, should be one-quarter of omega-6s.
