As pharmacists, haven't these people ever sold nicotine patches? How do you think those work? They work by releasing nicotine that gets absorbed directly through your skin into your bloodstream. If your skin didn't absorb nicotine, the nicotine patches wouldn't deliver a dosage. You have to be half-crazy to think that the skin is some kind of permanent barrier that keeps out everything you put on it.
In fact, the skin is very porous -- the skin breathes. Yes, it keeps out bacteria, but it sure doesn't keep out chemical solvents, and it doesn't keep out molecules as big as nicotine. |

If you need to you can use nicotine patches to help you over the first days or weeks. Increase your consumption of Vitamin C. Try homeopathic remedies to ease your addiction: these are easily obtainable at health food stores or pharmacies.
Enjoy the financial incentive. Just work out how much you used to spend on cigarettes each week (most people are horrified when they do). How much is that a year? That would pay for a terrific holiday, even a new car over a couple of years. Save the money you used to spend on cigarettes and give yourself a special treat. |

Medication can also decrease cravings and may be used with nicotine patches while nicotine is being gradually phased out of the system. A newer medication, verenicline (Chantrix™), has recently been released. This decreases the pleasure response obtained from cigarettes by blocking nicotine receptors.

| People who attend smoking-cessation programs, such as Smok-Enders, or use stop-smoking products, such as nicotine patches, are approximately twice as likely to quit the habit as those who try to stop on their own.
Important: Take 1,000 mg of vitamin C daily when trying to quit smoking. Each cigarette inactivates 25 mg of vitamin C in the body.
Step 7: See a doctor if you have low energy. Fatigue is a fairly common first symptom of hundreds of medical conditions, including iron-deficiency anemia, food allergies, heart problems and cancer. |

There you have it - an American culture that only pretends to implement smoking cessation programs while preying upon youth who are moving away from parental authority and into the age of influence as they enter their teens. All that counts is making money off these kids.

Alcohol Addiction
IVIost of us learn far more from the experiences of others than from someone spouting out facts and statistics, so I offer the example of my sister Lisa as an extreme case of an addict who started using when she was 13 years old. Her addiction lasted 29 years and included many forms of drugs and alcohol. It is absolutely amazing that she is alive today, living a healthy and productive life. |

If that's true, then how do nicotine patches work? How do transdermal drugs get absorbed through the skin if sunscreen chemicals don't? (Answer: ALL these chemicals get absorbed through the skin. The skin is not selective about what it chooses to absorb.)

Another more common form of poisoning comes from the ingestion of tainted food that was improperly cleaned, cooked, or refrigerated. Questionable ethics at the American Cancer Society
In a scandal that sounds eerily similar to the one carried out by the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society accepted $1 million dollars from SmithKline Beecham in exchange for permission to use the American Cancer Society's name and logo to promote the sale of nicotine patches and gum. The problem is that the ACS did not conduct any clinical research demonstrating SKB's nicotine patch was better than any other patch. In addition, SKB then marketed these ACS-branded products in a way that state Attorneys General said, "... |

As you approach your quit date, it is wise to purchase a supply of nicotine patches. Properly using the nicotine patch can make a huge difference in terms of the suffering that you will go through from nicotine withdrawal. The first patch goes on the morning of your quit date; generally one patch is used every day for up to 12 weeks. It is important to know that you never continue to smoke while you are using the patch. |

Despite the possible protective effect of smoking in people with UC, a strong case can be made that risks of smoking outweigh the benefits; even the use of nicotine patches carries its own side effects and remains experimental.
Nutritional supplements that may be helpful
UC is linked to an increased risk of colon cancer (page 000). Studies have found that people with UC who take folic acid (page 520) supplements or who have high blood levels of folic acid have a reduced risk of colon cancer compared with people who have UC and do not take folic acid supplements. |

A pilot study with six patients using nicotine patches (to avoid the effects of the other toxic chemicals in cigarette smoke) showed some improvement in a learning task, but no effect on global cognition or short-term memory. The scientific studies, however, are not conclusive (Lopez-Arrieta et al. 2001).

There are some side effects to nicotine patches and gum, which are prescribed by a doctor usually to heavy smokers who simply can't quit or who have had severe withdrawal symptoms when they've tried.
The patch, an adhesive square that secretes nicotine through the skin and into the bloodstream to help ease the pain of withdrawal, can cause itchiness and minor burning. And smoking even one cigarette while wearing the patch can cause a heart attack. |

On the other hand, smoking damages your body in more ways than you could possibly imagine. It's well known that smoking puts you at an increased risk for lung cancer and cardiovascular disease. It also alters brainwave patterns and causes an increase in stress hormone levels, including brain-damaging Cortisol. |

Curiously, nicotine patches had no effect on preventing an ex-smoker's increases in appetite and tendency to gain weight, although they did help alleviate the actual cravings for nicotine. This doesn't mean that the patch shouldn't be tried. When used correctly, with educational support, it can be extremely helpful. But it does mean that the former smoker must still contend with the problem of weight gain. |

| Medications: Nicotine gum and transdermal nicotine patches can help a smoker quit by providing the addictive nicotine without the other toxic chemicals contained in cigarettes. These prescription medications help smokers avoid withdrawal symptoms, but the dependency on nicotine is simply transferred to the gum or the patch; the user must still be weaned from the device. Some smokers report that, despite wearing the patch, another behavior associated with smoking remains: the desire to have something in their mouths (see Box 22.6). |

THE NICOTINE PATCH
In the early nineties several drug companies began to market nicotine patches. Placed on the skin, the patches delivered a constant dose of nicotine over a twenty-four-hour period. The patches came in series that contained three different amounts of nicotine, in graduated doses. The ex-smoker started with the highest-dose patch and, over three or four months, moved to the intermediate and finally to the lowest dose. When coupled with an educational program to support the user in withdrawing from cigarettes, the nicotine patch was very effective. |
