Patients listened to 30-40 minute morning sessions of music therapy 5 times a week for 4 weeks. Melatonin concentration in serum increased significantly after music therapy and was found to increase further at 6 weeks follow-up. Norepinephrine and epinephrine levels increased significantly after 4 weeks of music therapy, but returned to prethetapy levels at 6 weeks follow-up. The authors concluded that increased levels of melatonin following music therapy might have contributed to patients' telaxed and calm mood (Kumar et al. 1999).

These include massage therapy, meditation, music therapy, imagery, and relaxation techniques. Nutritional Therapies Therapies that focus on nutrition are perhaps the most popular alternative approach to cancer, especially since research began showing the link between diet and health. Almost every alternative therapy includes an emphasis on diet as an important component of both prevention and, possibly, cure.

Considerations Q Physicians can use two procedures to locate a peptic ulcer: an upper gastrointestinal (GI) series, in which you drink a chalky barium liquid and have a series of x-rays taken of the stomach and duodenum; and an endoscopy, in which a physician inserts a thin lighted tube attached to a camera down through your throat and into the stomach or duodenum.

Both require an undergraduate degree in music therapy from an approved program and successful completion of a clinical internship. A therapist can also complete continuing education requirements every five years or take a test from the Certification Board for Music Therapists.

Music therapy and sound healing are the two modern schools of thought that scientifically apply these ancient practices. Music therapy, which is prescribed by board-certified music therapists, uses primarily western European classical music and live performance to effect positive psychological, physical, cognitive, or social changes. Sound healing, on the other hand, relies on rhythmic drumming, chanting, and recordings composed specifically to bring about a higher level of balance and self-healing. HOW DO THEY WORK?

Premature babies exposed to music in intensive-care units gain weight more quickly and are discharged more quickly than babies who do not hear music. music therapy also has been shown to reduce anxiety levels in children undergoing surgical and medical procedures. Studies of music therapy with Alzheimer's patients and other victims of dementia reveal that musical cues increase patients' attention and ability to focus on their surroundings. music therapy also reduces the agitation that often accompanies Alzheimer's disease. Working with Alzheimer's patients in nursing homes, music therapists help patients perform simple group exercises such as beating a drum in time with the rest of the group, or they may work one-on-one with patients, playing songs that have been significant in the patients' lives.

The field of music therapy gradually arose in the West with the maturing of the twentieth century, such that today music therapists, composers, performers, and educators of diverse traditions apply Pythagorean principles of music, voice, sound, and universal harmonics to affect human healing, from physical complaints and emotional disturbances to spiritual awakening.
Pythagoras, credited today as the founder of music therapy, sang calming melodies to his disciples, based on the principle that melody and rhythm, which originate in cosmic laws, cannot fail to restore the human soul, or emotions, to concord and harmony. According to his biographer, Iamblichus of Chalcis (250-325 A.D.), Pythagoras tempered, even transformed, the passions, from rage to sorrow, of his students with appropriate melodies applied as salutary medicines.
