There's a brown scummy film floating on it, the water is brown and dirty, it looks stagnant, and there are flies and mosquitos buzzing around it. Now imagine you're on that same walk in the woods and you come upon a mountain glacier. The water is flowing freely down the rocks, with the light of the sun sparkling through, the water looks clean and clear and crisp, and you stand for a moment to admire it as it gushes down the mountain. Which water would you rather have in your body? Water Runs Your Body Well if you're not drinking enough clean, pure Think about k.

Mother has forgotten, if she ever knew, that just as spilled sugar in our kitchens attracts ants and insects, so does sugar in our bloodstreams attract mosquitos, microbes, and parasites. One of the great joys of being sugarfree is to be able to he on the beach or loll in the mountains without being bothered by mosquitos or other creatures. Once off sugar for a year or so, try it and see if it isn't true for you too. If you take along a guest who's still addicted to sugar, lie side by side. See who the mosquitos go for and who is left alone.

Plants are also effective to drive mosquitos away (for example, Eucalyptus citriodora, Pterigeron odorus, Santalum lanceolatum) and are appreciated for their cosmetic properties (a decoction from the fruit of Petalo-stigma pubescens is applied to make skin shiny).55 Plants can be of help as weight-loss medicine: Tiwi Islanders poke the young and sharp points of blady grass (Mnesithea rottboellioides or Imperata cylindrica) into the backs of the knee joints of overweight people to help make them lose weight.

Most mosquito control programs rely on chemicals like mala-thion to kill mosquitos. To be effective, malathion must be applied once or twice a week. It is toxic to fish, bees, and many other beneficial insects. Where it is frequently used, entire populations of mosquitos have become resistant. Pesticides should be used as a last resort, not a first, for two compelling reasons: (1) They are not discriminating in their toxicity, and (2) insects can develop resistance to them, rendering them ineffective.

Later on, pyrethroid products such as Scourge and Anvil 10+10® were also used to control the mosquitos in the NYC area. These pyrethroids disrupt hormones and can mimic estrogens. They are reported to be linked to breast cancer in females, decreased sperm counts in males and possibly brain tumors in children.51*'65 In addition, malathion and the above formulations typically contain some solvents in the form of xylene, benzene or toluene.2 Even though these are known to be exceedingly toxic and are registered poisons, they do not have to be specified on the Material Safety Data Sheets.5
If the aim were to kill the adult mosquitos with spray, this treatment would be considered to be highly ineffective.24b The chances of enough spray actually hitting and killing a mosquito was negligible. It is estimated that for every million drops of pesticide spray only one would land on a mosquito, and it takes two to three drops to kill a mosquito.3" Humans realistically were much more apt to be hit or hurt with the spray.
Dursban® Allowed Indefinitely on Golf Courses for Insect Control and Agriculture31 Spraying with Dursban® on non-resident golf courses, for mosquitos and on agriculture is to be allowed indefinitely.24 Do they dislike golfers or maybe think they are stronger than the rest of us. Golfers beware. Maybe your sporadic bad game or chronic ill health are due to toxic sprays used on the courses that are known to adversely affect the brain, muscles, nervous and reproductive systems of humans, as well as animals. The fairways and greens can look fine but there is a price.
Unfortunately There Is a New Potential Opportunity to Learn 26'66 Much will be eventually learned from the repeated and prolonged multiple chemical exposures of millions of children and adults in the New York City area, along the Eastern seaboard and in many other cities in the United States in an effort to control mosquitos. (Unfortunately, I personally believe it will not be long before we have more than an inkling of the scope of the tragic adverse health effects caused by the purposeful and repeated spraying of toxic aerial pesticides.
This is one of the chemicals repeatedly sprayed in NYC to help control mosquitos and the West Nile virus.) (See Chapter 8.) Many animals eat plants that make or contain estrogens. Estrogen-rich clover is reported to cause increased miscarriages and infertility in sheep.150 In Pigs Moldy, estrogen-rich corn causes uterine overgrowth in pigs. It can feminize males, stop ovulation and produce infertility.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), malaria-bearing anopheles mosquitos that are now immune to the pesticide used to control them—dichloro diphenyl trichloroethane (DDT)—have existed all over the world for many years. WHO distributes maps on which they color in certain sections of the globe where there is virtually no control of malaria, even where extraordinarily toxic concentrations of DDT are applied. These mosquitos began to develop immunity to DDT within just a few years of its agricultural introduction after World War II.

In the beginning it was called nova pestis.

For example, when they were spraying the chemical malathion for mosquitos in New York City, some people came out of their office buildings in Manhattan and found they not only immediately developed a cough and asthma, but some could not even remember their home address. (See Chapter 8.) It can happen instantaneously because the olfactory nerve sends messages directly from the nose into the brain. Intravenous adrenal fluids and blood plasma were airlifted in and everything blamed on the mosquitos.12 When the victorious Viet Cong armies overran Saigon, they were exposed for the first time—like the Crusaders arriving in the Holy Land centuries before—to the pause that refreshes, the Coke machine, the candy counter. It is their turn to accustom themselves to gluttony, and La Dolce Vita and to eat and drink sugar openly in the street without shame. Isn't this where we came in?

In Wauconda, Larson threatened to sue the state when her daughter was exposed to pesticides sprayed along a local highway to control mosquitos. Larson next worked for an ordinance that residents be notified when lawn care chemicals were used. In September 1984, the town passed a precedent-setting ordinance requiring lawn care companies to obtain permits from the town and to post notices before spraying, banning application in wind over 10 miles per hour, and limiting spraying along a common property line.

Our body's tolerance and immunizing power becomes more limited, so we cannot respond properly to extreme attacks, whether they be cold, heat, mosquitos, or microbes. Excessive sugar has a strong mal-effect on the functioning of the brain; the key to orderly brain function is glutamic acid, a vital compound found in many vegetables. The B vitamins play a major role in dividing glutamic acid into antagonistic-complementary compounds which produce a "proceed" or "control" response in the brain. B vitamins are also manufactured by symbiotic bacteria which five in our intestines.

The Massachusetts Audubon Society encourages use of pesticides to control mosquitos only if a public emergency exists. Under most conditions, other methods developed by researchers in integrated pest management (IPM) are much more preferable. For example, a bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), kills mosquito larvae with minimal environmental damage. The Massachusetts Middlesex Mosquito Control District uses "Open Marsh Water Management" to minimize pools of stagnant salt water, the breeding site for the salt marsh mosquito. This principle can be applied at home.
Empty water from old flower pots, old tires, children's toys, cans or bottles, water cans, or buckets—all potential breeding grounds of mosquitos. The same is true for clogged roof gutters, water troughs, poorly maintained sumps, overirrigated lawns and fields, plastic wading pools, and bird baths. These tips, says Audubon, may take care of 50 percent of the problem. A neighborhood project would be more effective. Audubon's tollfree Environmental Helpline number for mosquito control is listed in Resources. ž ? ?
The potholes did not drain with tidal flushing, and their stagnating water became ideal breeding sites for mosquitos. A pothole drainage system was designed that permits daily flushing. As a result, aircraft stopped spraying the marshes with pesticides. The mosquito problem has disappeared from nearby communities: Dairy farmers reported their herds are free of mosquito swarms for the first time in memory. In September 1989, after a summer of studying the cause of the unexpected decline in the gypsy moth population in Connecticut, two entomologists from the U.S.
Abandoned tires collect water and become a breeding ground for mosquitos. If ignited, they burn for months, creating air and groundwater contamination. Retreading tires requires about 30 percent of the energy necessary to produce new tires and provides nearly 80 percent of the mileage of a new tire. Almost 20 million truck tires and 17 million passenger tires are retreaded annually. Old tires can be recycled by grinding, shredding, and pulverizing the tires. The materials are then formed into sheet rubber and used to make molded materials and semipneumatic tires.

To equate the scale of evolution of mosquitos becoming resistant to the unimaginably toxic DDT, to put that on a human scale of evolution, would be akin to saying that so many human beings have died from bullets, human beings are now immune to being shot. You can shoot them in the chest and they're fine because so many of their species have been exposed to bullets that they mutated and are now immune to harm from bullets.

Others were there for the same purpose, but the gnats and mosquitos proved very annoying. In fact, several parties packed up their things and left earlier than expected. However, Mrs. Hansen came prepared. She had bought a unique product at a local supermarket that would save them from having to leave, too. She removed from the package several flat, small candles containing citronella oil, placed them in candle holders, and lit them. The aromatic fumes kept all winged insects away, so they could enjoy their evening. The name of the product Mrs. Hansen used is Off.', made by Johnson Wax.

You can tell if you have an abnormal pH by some of the following characteristics: your jewelry, rings and metal watch bands turn color (oxidize) quickly; insects like mosquitos are not attracted to you; you frequently develop yeast infections like toenail fungus. Acid/base is best tested by having your blood checked for pH in the veins. A quicker and cheaper method of testing your pH is using pH litmus paper (such as Baxter Diagnostics pH Indicator Strips) from your pharmacy store. If your saliva is much lower than the comparison color charts, then you may need to heed this section closely.

The huge stockpiles, often in private junkyards, are breeding grounds for mosquitos and are susceptible to fire. Rubber (40 percent of the tire) can be recycled to make building materials, irrigation piping, and paving material, and recycled rubber can be added to virgin rubber and plastics to ptoduce a vatiety of products such as laundry baskets, mud flaps, athletic and doot mats, truck-bed linets, grocery-cart wheels, and retreaded tites. The remainder of the tire—steel belts, bead wire, and sidewall—can also be recycled.

By June 1956, the WHO Executive Board issued this foreboding statement: "The conclusion was that the development of resistance to insecticides has become a serious public health problem. Thirty-two countries have reported insect resistance to DDT and other new insecticides." Is the insect kingdom laughing at our folly? Think of it in this perspective.

Other uses for increased thiamine include treatment of stress and muscle tensions, diarrhea, fever and infections, cramps, and headaches. Deficiency and toxicity: There is no known toxicity in humans from thiamine taken orally. People have taken hundreds of milligrams daily without any harmful effect, although some may become more stimulated than others. Thiamine injections, however, have occasionally been associated with trauma or edema.
