Everything You Need to Know About Enzymes to Treat Everything from Digestive Problems and Allergies to migraines and Arthritis

Tom Bohager

A migraine is a severe, incapacitating headache usually preceded or accompanied by visual disturbances, light sensitivity, and nausea or vomiting. migraines are caused by constriction of the arteries that lead to the brain, although there are a variety of possible underlying causes. (See migraines.) Cluster headaches, a type of migraine, typically cause severe pain around or behind one eye. Sinus headaches are caused by congestion and possibly infection of the sinuses. The pain is usually in the face, spreading from above the eyes to as far as the gum line. A feeling of pressure is common.
Causes of migraines include vascular instability, platelet disorders, nerve disorders, seratonin deficiency, certain drugs and xenobiotics, nutrient deficiencies, and allergenic foods. Recommendations include ascertaining the underlying cause or precipitating factors of the migraines, dietary changes to identify and eliminate food allergies, stress management, adequate rest, and supplementation with enzymes and nutrients that may be deficient in the body.
Classical migraines are relatively rare. These headaches are preceded by a slowly expanding area of blindness surrounded by a sparkling edge; these symptoms can affect up to one-half of the field of vision of each eye. The blindness may resolve after twenty minutes, and is often followed by a severe one-sided headache with nausea, vomiting, hypersensitivity to light, and hypersensitivity to sound. Other temporary neurological symptoms, such as weakness on one side, may also occur. Migraine sufferers usually develop their own coping mechanisms for intractable pain.
The diseases and symptoms commonly associated with food allergies can include asthma, indigestion, diarrhea, fatigue, canker sores, celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, hyperactivity, ear infections, migraines, bed-wetting, acne, eczema, or edema. Many experts advocate rotation diets to identify specific food allergens. Most physicians agree that the simplest and most effective approach to treating food allergies is through the avoidance of eating allergenic foods.

So, for example, migraines -- if you take vitamin B2 at 400 milligrams a day, that will decrease migraines by 67 percent after six weeks. Mike: That's phenomenal. Teitelbaum: That was on one of the national news services a while back. Right before it, they had this thing about cutting out major face muscles to decrease migraines by 50 percent. I wanted to stick my head in the studio and say 10 cents of vitamin B2 is more effective. Also, B12 -- there's a whole host of natural things that are great for treating the food allergies.

WARNING SIGN Recently the famous Nurses' Health Study found that women who suffer from migraines that are preceded by a visual aura are at increased risk of heart attack or stroke. Researchers don't yet know if the same is true for men. Paradoxically, some migraine sufferers have a visual aura but not a headache. (Migraines don't always involve head pain.) In addition to eye flashes, this type of migraine—sometimes called ophthalmic migraine (aka silent migraine)—can cause other visual disturbances, as well as nausea and nasal congestion.

Hint for migraines: try magnesium, 400-500 mg daily, which has actually stopped chronic migraines in a number of my patients.) There are several classes of anticonvulsant drugs, and only a few are known to cause nutrient depletion: phenytoin (Dilantin), carbamazepine (Tegretol, Carbatrol, Epitrol), primidone (Mysoline), methsuxamide (Celontin), valproic acid (Depakote, Depacon, Depakene), topiramate (Topomax) and gabapentin (Neurontin). Restoring depleted nutrients is particularly important when medications are needed long-term, as these often are.

For example, let's say you have migraines and in an initial hypnotic session connect with old anger as the source of your headaches. In the next session, you probe deeper and discover there is great fear underneath your anger. In the session that follows, you uncover a well of sadness related to your fear, and so on. A series of four sessions should help you break sufficient mental ground to achieve measurable, meaningful changes in your mental and physical health—enough to get you jazzed about your future?and, in this example, enough to get rid of your migraines.

If I have someone with migraines, is it better to give them an expensive drug, like Sumtriptan, which has significant side effects, or is it better to say, "Your diet is deficient in magnesium -- consume foods richer in magnesium." Now, only 1 out of 6 patients with migraines need magnesium. But for that 1 out of 6, increased magnesium in the diet is almost miraculous in what it does for them, because not only does it relieve the migraines, but everything else impacted by inadequate magnesium will improve as well. The model fails for migraines, too. migraines are another case where lab tests are useless; instead, patients must endure severe pulsing pain over half the head, accompanied by sensitivity to bright light and nausea or vomiting. But at least a definition of migraine exists, and when the symptoms add up to the clinical syndrome we call migraine, your doctor can make a diagnosis. So, too, for autism, schizophrenia, and depression. The general rule is that medical materialism fails when no lab test exists to serve as a marker of a specific disease.

They are all good, effective alternative treatments and can help to prevent migraines. CQ10 is a nutrient that is normally associated with energy: It helps the cells utilize oxygen. Andrew Hershey, M.D., Ph.D., associate director of neurology research at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, looked at its relation to migraine in a recent study done at the University of Cincinnati. He examined 1,552 children and adolescents between the ages of three and twenty-two and found that most had insufficient CoQIO levels.
Those affected went from having migraines an average of 19.2 days per month to 12.5 days per month. That's a big difference when you are experiencing a migraine, and when you're a teen whose state of mind and feeling of well-being play a big role in determining how successful your social life is. Another study done in 2005 examined CoQIO's effect on adult migraine sufferers. Those who took 300 mg of CoQIO for four months experienced a 50 percent or greater reduction in frequency of migraine attacks, significantly different from those just using a placebo.
Compelling evidence from human trials suggests that butterbur may have real benefits in preventing migraines. One hundred and eight children and adolescents between the ages of six and seventeen tried butterbur root extract for four months and experienced a decrease in the frequency of migraine attacks. In addition, they all reported feeling better. The same results were found in adults. In one study, Pedadolex—a patented, high-quality butterbur preparation that you can buy in stores—was used at the dosage of 25 mg twice daily for twelve weeks.

For example, you could have a new patient that has migraines call a patient who was cured of migraines. You can match up the circumstances of new patients with those patients who have done well with the treatment. This is an excellent way to encourage hope, determination, and compliance. There are many patients who have completed the treatment who are willing to share their experiences with others, as recorded on the Wilsons Temperature Syndrome website (www.wtsmed.com). Doctor Confidence Doctor confidence is extremely important with WT3 therapy since success depends on patient compliance.

Eating a few leaves every day can help prevent migraines. Topically, feverfew can be applied as a compress to the head to relieve headache, to the gums to reduce swelling after a tooth extraction, or to bruises to facilitate healing. It also can be used in a sitz bath to relieve menstrual cramps or in an enema to get rid of worms. The fresh flowers can be rubbed onto the skin to soothe insect bites. Edible Uses Feverfew is edible, though it is not generally considered a food source. It has been used to flavor pastries and wine.
