At the end of six months among the exercise group, no new cases of metabolic syndrome developed, and metabolic syndrome was resolved in nine people for a total reduction of 41 percent. In the control group, eight people had their metabolic syndrome resolved, while four new cases of metabolic syndrome developed, resulting in a total reduction of 18 percent.8
A study of nearly 40,000 women found that walking, even at a moderate clip, reduced heart disease risk, including among those who smoked, were overweight, and had high cholesterol. |

PGX has been shown to improve significantly all aspects of the metabolic syndrome. At the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association in 2004, the results of a clinical study using this proprietary fiber blend were presented by researchers from the Risk Factor Modification Centre at St. Michael's Hospital and the University of Toronto. Subjects with the metabolic syndrome took 3 grams of PGX or a placebo three times a day before meals. After three weeks, there was a 23 percent reduction in after-meal glucose levels, a 40 percent reduction in after-meal insulin release, and a 55. |

Even drinking diet drinks is associated with a higher risk of metabolic syndrome. Consumption of sugar (or its equivalents, like corn syrup) in soft drinks has been linked to obesity in children and adolescents. But a recent study of almost all fifty-year-old men and women in Framingham, Massachusetts, found that having more than one soft drink, whether sugared or diet, increased the risk of metabolic syndrome by 44 percent over a four-year period. The risk was increased similarly whether the drink was sugared or diet. |

What Do We Mean by Overweight and Obesity?
Many people aren't always clear about what doctors and health experts mean when they talk about overweight and obesity. Part of the problem is that people frequently have distorted views of their own weight, so they think they weigh less than they do. |

Her diagnosis was metabolic syndrome, a prediabetic condition that includes insulin resistance, elevated blood sugar, excessive visceral or belly fat, and cardiovascular problems including high cholesterol and high blood pressure. In most people who don't take big steps toward healthful living, metabolic syndrome evolves into type 2 diabetes—a disease that has reached epidemic proportions worldwide. |

Metabolic Syndrome (Insulin Resistance Syndrome; Syndrome X): Flaxseed showed effects on various aspects of this metabolic syndrome, which consists of obesity, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and/or hypertension (Nestel et al, 1997).
Omega-3 Fatty Acid Synthesis: Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for synthesis of components of specialized membranes, such as nervous tissues (Goodnight et al, 1982). ALA is a precursor to certain omega-3 fatty acids contained in marine fish oils and interest in its potential as a substrate for synthesis of these substances runs high. |

It is estimated that about 60 million adults in the United States meet the criteria for the metabolic syndrome. The metabolic syndrome—as well as type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, and obesity—can be viewed as different facets of the same disease, having the same underlying dietary, lifestyle, and genetic causes. |

WEIGHT LOSS: One study found that obese individuals who consumed one half of a fresh grapefruit before meals for twelve weeks lost a significant amount of weight and had improvements in insulin resistance associated with metabolic syndrome. A fad diet based on eating grapefruits was developed in Hollywood, California, and first became popular in the 1930s, making a later resurgence in the 1970s. Medical and nutritional experts found it to be nutritionally incomplete and unsound. |

What You Should Know
Mood swings, chronic feelings of tiredness, and mental fuzziness are commonly signs of underlying (and often undiagnosed) blood sugar disorders, including impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, Syndrome X, prediabetes, and full-blown diabetes. Along the spectrum of glucose intolerance—perhaps more accurately described as sugar and carbohydrate intolerance—people may display a range of mood and behavior problems.
A number of clues point to underlying sugar and carbohydrate intolerance. |
| In the later stages of Syndrome X (a form of prediabetes also known as metabolic syndrome), it's common for people to have both elevated glucose and elevated insulin levels. The body's regulation of glucose goes awry, and it can affect mood, behavior, and thinking processes.
What exactly happens with your glucose and insulin levels?
Eating almost any food leads to a rise in glucose, which in turn prompts the secretion of insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps move glucose into cells, where it should be burned for energy. Foods rich in protein (e.g., fish, chicken) or fiber (e.g. |

Belly fat, a sign of Syndrome X (sometimes called metabolic syndrome or insulin-resistance syndrome), elevates cholesterol and triglycerides and increases the risk of diabetes and heart disease. (See my book Syndrome X: The Complete Nutritional Program to Prevent and Reverse Insulin Resistance.) Because Syndrome X is a form of prediabetes, it frequently includes mood changes, such as impatience, irritability, anger, hostility, and fuzzy thinking. |

Ultimately, obesity and disorders such as metabolic syndrome affect the erection quality by promoting decrease in blood flow or circulation and affecting hormone level," says Dr. Lamm, who advises his patients to cut down on their intake of sugar and fast-acting carbs.
James Chow, M.D., coauthor of Hypoglycemia for Dummies, however, sees the sugar-sex connection as more indirect.

| Let's say a man has gained 10 to 20 pounds over time because of his sugar or carb habit and he's headed toward insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome. How would that affect him in the bedroom?
"His ability to perform at the highest efficiency is going to start to diminish over time," explains Dr. Lamm in a phone interview. "He will have performance issues. It'll be more difficult for him to get an erection, to maintain one, and there will be longer times between erections. Excessive weight is a major contributor to decreased sexual performance. |

Having a fatty middle can signal metabolic syndrome, a cluster of diabetes and heart disease risk factors that includes insulin resistance, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high triglyceride levels, and low HDL (high-density lipoprotein or "good" cholesterol) levels. Indeed, people who are apple-shaped are three times more likely to suffer a heart attack than those who are pear-shaped—that is, carrying most of their fat in their buttocks. |

In addition to still getting a significant amount of caffeine, drinking three cups or more of decaffeinated coffee may cause an increase in harmful LDL cholesterol by increasing a specific type of blood fat linked to the metabolic syndrome, according to a study presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2005. Decaffeinated coffee is made from more acidic beans than regular coffee. These strong acids have shown to increase the incidence of heartburn, osteoporosis, Glaucoma and rheumatoid arthritis. |

One thing we know for sure is that women with PCOS are much more likely to have a condition called insulin resistance, which is also associated with metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. (More on insulin resistance in a moment.) Our diet can significantly aggravate the condition of insulin resistance, which is why dietary intervention can be so effective in all conditions where insulin resistance is a problem.
In my opinion, a low carb diet is the absolute best strategy for dealing with PCOS naturally. |
| The cells become "resistant" to the effects of insulin, and the person is left with both high blood sugar and high insulin, which often puts you on the fast track to diabetes and metabolic syndrome (itself a risk factor for heart disease; see page 192). It's not a great scenario, and it's increasingly common.
What chromium does is help insulin do its job better. In this way, it works much like certain "insulin-sensitizing" medications, such as glucophage. |
| It has multiple uses (see also diabetes and metabolic syndrome, page 47), but it is one of the most powerful liver nutrients available. Berkson wrote a book about it called The Alpha Lipoic Breakthrough. Read it.
Alpha lipoic acid also helps regenerate glutathione, arguably the body's most important antioxidant. Lester Packer, Ph.D., professor and senior researcher at the University of California for more than 40 years and author of The Antioxidant Miracle, has called alpha lipoic acid "probably the most potent naturally occurring antioxidant known to man. |
| High blood sugar is the first step down a road that can easily lead to metabolic syndrome (a kind of prediabetes that puts you at considerable risk for heart disease) or even diabetes itself. When your blood sugar is high, all kinds of metabolic events occur, none of them good.
Foremost among them is an overproduction of the "sugar-clearing" hormone insulin. One of the jobs of insulin is to clear the bloodstream of excess sugar. The more sugar in your bloodstream, the more insulin the pancreas has to send out to get the job done. |
| Blood sugar goes up, insulin goes up, the cells refuse to allow either of them in, and you're left with the enormous health risks of high blood sugar and high insulin, a sure path to either metabolic syndrome or diabetes. We call this condition insulin resistance; its opposite is insulin sensitivity, which is what you want. Research demonstrates that vinegar makes the cells more "sensitive" to insulin, a desirable effect indeed. |

While the widespread acceleration of the Western diet has given us the instant gratification of sugar, in many people— especially those newly exposed to it—the speediness of this food overwhelms the ability of insulin to process it, leading to type 2 diabetes and all the other chronic diseases associated with metabolic syndrome. As one nutrition expert put it to me, "We're in the middle of a national experiment in the mainlining of glucose. |
