Mesothelioma
In a case-control epidemiological study of mesothelioma, Tomato or Tomato juice consumption of greater than 16 "doses" per month was compared to no doses. The RR for the Tomato group was 0.6 with a 95% confidence interval of 0.2 to 1.9. Ninety-four cases were examined and adjusted for age, religion, occupation, and educational level (Muscat & Huncharek, 1996).
Oral/Pharyngeal Cancer
A case-control epidemiological study of 266 male arid 36 female Italian patients evaluated the RR of developing oral or pharyngeal cancer. |

The concentration of HA in blood serum has not been found to be elevated in patients with sarcomas, lymphomas, brain tumors, breast carcinomas, and other malignancies, but is elevated five-fold among patients with mesothelioma, a form of chest cancer, compared to healthy adults. [Cancer 62: 326-30, 1988] High HA serum levels have also been found in Wilms tumor and in bladder cancer. |

Before he could get a driver's license, Donald was diagnosed with mesothelioma. He had never worked in a factory. His only exposures occurred through playing and hugging his daddy as a toddler. He died in the fall of 1989, barely sixteen years of age. Parents aren't supposed to bury their children. Such an unnatural loss leaves permanent marks.
"I was there when he died," Frank told a reporter. "He was down to skin and bones. The cancer had eaten him up."
For some time, Fitzsimmons didn't connect his son's death with his job. |
| This did not include 5 cases of mesothelioma all under the age of 60 with 3 under the age of 50. In the foundry itself the government measured for silica and the company was never—in over 40 years—in compliance. It was literally a killing field.24
Fitzsimmons's former wife, Maria LaCount, remembers, "It would be on his clothes as fine black and red dust. He would be literally black and he would pick up and hug the baby. We didn't realize this stuff was hazardous."
As a teenager, Donald was never an athlete. He'd always been short of breath. It turned out there were good reasons for this. |

There is evidence that the Simian virus 40 is associated with a lung cancer called mesothelioma. Viruses seek to inactivate tumor-suppressing genes, which is what makes them so troublesome. [Journal Molecular Medicine 73: 529-38, 1995]
The aim of cancer vaccines is to teach the patient's own immune system to recognize tumor cells and develop antibodies against them, but not against normal tissues. Currently, there is only one vaccine, against hepatitis B-induced liver cancer, that is approved for human use.
There are drawbacks to cancer vaccines. |
| Ironically, humans exposed to fine particle zeolites in their lungs may develop a form of cancer called mesothelioma. [Journal National Cancer Institute 98: 414-17, 2006]
Zeolites have metal chelating, toxin-removing, even oxygen-removing properties, which means they will act to reduce oxidation of tissues when taken internally. Zeolites have been tested in animals and have performed favorably without toxicity to reduce the number and size of tumors. |

Mesothelioma is believed to be exclusively associated with asbestos exposure. Often asbestos-related cancer looked just like other lung cancers. Autopsied asbestos workers had lung cancer ten times or more than others. The case was effectively closed by 1939 for German compensation carriers: asbestos clearly induced asbestosis, and if you had enough asbestos in your lungs to cause even slight asbestosis, lung cancer was deemed occupational.10 In the Allied countries, national security concerns during World War II combined with industrial trade secrets to keep this information from the public. |
| Either mesothelioma is caused by something else that has yet to be identified that occurs widely throughout these nations. Or, somehow, somewhere these women have been exposed to asbestos and have had the bad luck to develop this disabling and lethal illness.
Different rules have been developed in science to decide when a specific relationship between any two things can be considered to be proven or evident, and who is responsible for informing people of a suspected hazard. At this point, the absence of epidemiological proof of harm is taken by many to mean that no harm exists. |

In 2004, Tom was diagnosed with a rare cancer, called mesothelioma, which is most often associated with exposure to asbestos, and from which virtually no one survives. He was told by his doctors that he had only a few months to live. While going about his work of raising marine phytoplankton to feed the shellfish, as an experiment, Tom began consuming half a teaspoon of the concentrated microalgae each day along with a drink of water. Within a few weeks he astounded his doctors with his recovery. A subsequent biopsy examination found no malignancy evident in his body. |

The town also has five times the level of mesothelioma as the rest of the region. Almost 1,500 cases of the disease were diagnosed between 1981 and 2001, about one new victim a week. 18That's impressive for a town with a population of 70,000.19
What's even more impressive is that you won't find a single asbestos mine in the region. Rather, Sarnia is home to 20 percent of Canada's petroleum refineries.20 Many of the residents lived amid asbestos-lined foundry ovens and asbestos-insulated pipes, or with the manufacture of asbestos products. |

According to the American Journal of Medicine, many studies have reported the presence of SV40 from the polio vaccine in human brain tumors and bone cancers, malignant mesothelioma, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The polio vaccine seems ever more linked to cancers, especially in children. The cancers caused by the use of the polio vaccine in the past still kills 20,000 people a year in the United States. This is quite outrageous given the fact that polio itself hasn't killed anyone for a long time.

Asbestos workers have increased risk of developing an unusual form of lung cancer called mesothelioma. Smoking and secondary smoke are the main reasons lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths. Radiation, charcoal steaks, too much fat in our diet, saccharin, and the many other chemicals found in herbicides and pesticides are what medical literature refers to as carcinogens, or those things that increase our risk of developing cancer. |

Even today epidemiologists are being hired by brake manufacturers to convince the courts that the data collected on asbestos from brakes and mesothelioma point to no causal connection.37
Look again at how Evarts Graham chided the skeptics on the hazards of tobacco smoking in his Lancet commentary. For agents that can cause cancer two decades after exposures begin, is it fair to insist that we must have proof that such harm has happened in many groups? |

In a 1998 study done in Western Australia, 1024 blue asbestos workers known to be at high risk of diseases such as mesothelioma and lung cancer, were enrolled in a cancer prevention program using vitamin A. Half the subjects were given 30 mg per day of beta carotene and the other half7500 meg (25,000 IU) of retinol. The workers were followed up from the start of the study in June 1990 until May 1995. Four cases of lung cancer and three cases of mesothelioma were observed in those in the vitamin A group, and six cases of lung cancer and 12 cases of mesothelioma in the beta carotene group. |

Asbestos exposure can cause a variety of illnesses, including lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma, a type of tumor. Cancers of the larynx, oral cavity, kidney, and colon are sometimes attributed to asbestos as well. Only qualified contractors should do asbestos removal. fj One household item that can cause a lot of problems is carpeting. Some of the chemicals commonly used in carpeting have been shown to have an adverse effect on health. One suspect chemical is 4-phenylcyclohexene (4-PC), a by-product of the production of styrene-butadiene. |

Their paper presented the favorable results of the treatment of 11 patients with peritoneal mesothelioma treated with IAT between May 1980 and February 1987.
Although the paper had its deficiencies, which critics were not slow to point out, the central claim is hard to dismiss out of hand. For Burton asserted that several of his mesothelioma patients have survived in good health for years on his treatment.
Mesothelioma, the asbestos-related cancer, is incurable and deadly. If these claims are false, then IAT is truly a delusion or fraud of monumental proportions. |

Nonetheless, the treatment of mesothelioma will continue to be a major health priority for many years because of the unusually long latency period of asbestos cancer.
There are no known survivors of mesothelioma in the traditional medical health care system. Dr. Kunderman, a board-certified surgeon, has had considerable experience with this disease since his office was located near Johns Mansville, the asbestos producer. He was eventually afflicted with the cancer himself and chose to place himself under Dr. Burton's care. As mentioned earlier, Dr. |

Four cases of lung cancer and three cases of mesothelioma were observed in those in the vitamin A group, and six cases of lung cancer and 12 cases of mesothelioma in the beta carotene group. In the retinol group, there was also a significantly lower rate of death from all causes.9 When the researchers compared these results with those workers who had not taken part in the study they found that those taking part in the study had significantly lower death rates than non-participants. |

We just threw up our hands toward the end of my years of practice with mesothelioma; we had tried everything, including such radical surgery as removing a whole lung and removing all of the pleura, but still these tumors recurred."
Dr. Burton reported that the average survival rate of his mesothelioma patients was already 47 to 48 months, and a number of survivors are currently residing at the clinic. Some have been released and now live normal lives since, "in contrast to other types of cancer, once you get rid of all tumor cells containing asbestos, the patient is safe," said Dr. Burton. |

Mesothelioma, the asbestos-related cancer, is incurable and deadly. If these claims are false, then IAT is truly a delusion or fraud of monumental proportions. If they are true, however, then IAT is an astonishing discovery, with profound implications for the treatment of every cancer patient. Only good scientific studies can answer such a question. But in this bitter struggle neither side seems inclined to find an answer very soon.

For example, cigarette smoke is the major cause of the common bronchogenic carcinoma of the lung, but it does not cause the less common mesothelioma of the lung. Asbestos causes both mesotheliomas and bronchogenic carcinomas. Certain aniline dyes (especially 2-naphthylamine) cause bladder cancer, but little of any other kind of cancer. A similar specificity probably also applies to cancers whose cause or causes have not yet been identified, because the incidences of the different kinds of cancer tend to vary independently. |

Nearly 20% of women treated for ovarian cancer develop other tumots beyond the abdomen. A mutation in the p53 tumor suppressor gene appears to predispose some women with ovarian cancer to distant and rapid tumor spread, according to data from the University of Iowa Health Care Study. |

| Asbestos can cause stiffening and thickening of the normally supple pleura and lead to shortness of breath. mesothelioma, a rare and serious cancer that grows from the pleura, is also linked to asbestos exposure and may be present as shortness of breath (see pp. 124-127).
Although most substances that damage or irritate the airways are inhaled, other routes of exposure can lead to chronic lung damage. Substances that are injected into the bloodstream or absorbed through the skin can have lung toxicity. |
