Now, throughout most of the world, afflictions from mercury poisoning are referred to as Minamata disease. There have been other mercury poisoning incidents to alert us to its dangers, but industry, and dentistry in particular, continues its use.
Dental "silver" amalgams and seafood, especially fish, are now recognized as the number one and two sources of mercury poisoning. Coal-burning power plants release a large amount of mercury into the environment.2 mercury poisoning is a global problem, because winds carry it around the world, even to the Arctic. |

Those same dentists -- all of whom should have their dental licenses revoked, by the way -- continue to place mercury into the mouths of children through the use of "silver fillings" (which, in reality, contain more mercury than silver), inducing a lifetime of mercury poisoning.
By any honest measure of psychological health, these doctors, dentists and health authorities who promote mandatory vaccinations, water supply fluoridation and mercury fillings are nothing less than clinically insane. By any honest legal measure, they might be considered criminally negligent for their actions. |

This syndrome, including both the odd skin changes and ominous nervous system findings, is exactly how mercury poisoning is manifest in a child afflicted with chronic poisoning. This child's parents had not given him mercury to drink as a home remedy, nor had he been experimenting with quicksilver in the family room. An exhaustive battery of questions revealed little. When asked of any recent changes at home, the parents could report only that the interior of the house had recently been repainted. |
| Trapped within the indoor environment, it turned the suburban house into an ideal exposure chamber, leading to mercury poisoning in the entire family.2
The links between the first child, with mercury in his appendix, and the second, suffering the effects of mercury inhalation, are stronger than they might appear at first. The link is not simply that the same toxin was involved in each case. The more important tie is that a single, ancient hazard is still present in our everyday environment, not only in an old and traditional form but also in an entirely new combination. |
| A connection is sometimes made between the expression "mad as a hatter" and mercury poisoning, which occurs in the hat trade from use of the toxin to make felt from rabbit fur and can result in mental derangement. The theory that widespread lead poisoning may have contributed to the decline of the Roman Empire is recycled with a certain frequency. Otherwise, all seems unformed and void, even to most environmentalists themselves.7
In fact, the true environmental record is far from a blank slate. |
| Hypersalivation to the point of drooling is one of the classic symptoms of mercury poisoning, a hazard that would be anticipated when using corrosive sublimate. Kyanization is one of the few work-related hazards to be specifically highlighted in Chadwick's landmark report of 1842, even if the root of the problem is attributed to the victims themselves:
Some wotkmen employed in "Kyanizing" wood become frequently ill from the fumes created in the process, to which fumes they unnecessarily exposed themselves. |

Sometimes photophobia signals some serious but treatable conditions—such as measles, hypertension, and Graves' disease (see Bulging Eyes, above)—as well as such potentially life-threatening diseases as meningitis, encephalitis, botulism, rabies, and mercury poisoning. However, you'd have other, much more serious signs in addition to light sensitivity if you suffered from any of these potentially deadly disorders.

When a patient turned up in his office with mercury poisoning, Dr. Christopher Lam, chair at the department of chemical pathology at Hong Kong's Prince of Wales Hospital, examined her skin whitening cream and found mercury levels 65,000 times higher than amounts allowed in the US. Follow-up product tests conducted by Lam found mercury in eight of 38 skin whitening creams made in China and Taiwan. Some of the products were labeled "mercury free. |

It is not at all unlikely that these individuals received similar vaccines in their own childhood and thus suffer the neurological toxicity effects of mercury poisoning.
But what about public health? Shouldn't kids be protected against infectious disease?
There are many doctors who continue to argue in favor of mass vaccination programs. The point of these programs, they say, is to protect children and "save lives" from infectious disease. So why shouldn't we listen to the doctors on all this? |

Recent research has pointed to low glutathione levels being responsible for children's vulnerability to mercury poisoning from vaccines.7 It seems reasonable to assume that low levels of magnesium would also render a child vulnerable. And in fact glutathione requires magnesium for its synthesis.8 Glutathione synthetase requires y-glutamyl cysteine, glycine, ATP, and magnesium ions to form glutathione.9
In magnesium deficiency, the enzyme y-glutamyl transpeptidase is lowered. |

The most vulnerable of all to mercury poisoning seems to be the developing fetus in pregnant women. A fetus accumulates more mercury than even the mother does, and in amounts directly proportional to the number of her amalgam fillings. [For the same reason, pregnant women should avoid tuna, salmon and other mercury-containing fish.]
The gradual, continuous release of mercury and other toxic metals into the body by metal fillings affects particularly the liver, kidneys, lungs and brain. Cadmium, for example, which is used to produce the pink color in dentures, is five times as toxic as lead. |

In the case of mercury poisoning, the appearance of Candida is a coping mechanism by the body and a signal for assistance to rid it of the heavy metal that is wreaking havoc within all its systems.
There are so many factors that can cause chemical imbalances within the body and work against its ability to deliver health. This can be very confusing. But is there a common denominator? That is the subject of the next chapter, where we examine the body's one critical chemistry requirement for health. |
| Coal-burning power plants release a large amount of mercury into the environment.2 mercury poisoning is a global problem, because winds carry it around the world, even to the Arctic. Once in the air, it is inhaled, and starts accumulating in the food chain. A World Health Organization report from 1997 stated that mercury accumulates at the top of the aquatic and marine food chains, and that fish are the major source of dietary exposure. Many species of fish, especially tuna, swordfish, shark, and bottom-feeders, as well as shellfish, are now considered unsafe to eat. |

Some years ago, I wrote an article listing as many as 50 symptoms associated with mercury poisoning. The top three were fatigue, inappropriate coldness and sugar intolerance. These patients crave sugar and eat sweet things, and may or may not know that they will get sick. They may eat sweets on Monday and get sick on Tuesday. They may have all sorts of bizarre symptoms—muscle aches and pains, fatigue, headaches, personality changes. You don't have to have all of the symptoms; you can have one, and it may come and go. |

Symptoms of mercury poisoning can happen at any time, as it continues to accumulate. Research shows that over time, mercury can quietly attack your heart, nervous and immune systems, including your brain and psyche, and disrupt reproduction and sexual performance.
One product I'd like to point out is Dr. Bruce Dooley's MercOut (www .mercout.com), which offers testing and products geared specifically toward addressing mercury levels in the body. The MercOut Detoxification Program in particular can safely remove mercury as well as lead and arsenic from your body. |
| And in the event of mercury poisoning, you won't realize the benefits from ending your exposure for about a year, or four half-lives. This is actually a good thing because you don't want to rush mercury out of your body's tissues. It must be flushed out slowly from your body so you don't have acutely toxic levels of mercury dumping into your bloodstream and reinforcing more damage, let alone making you feel lousy.

Zamm adds, "to prove mercury poisoning, except after the fact, when the mercury is out and the patient feels better. Taking a whole group of fillings out is not a minor matter, so I have devised some tests to assess whether or not it is worth proceeding in this direction.
"If you crave sugar and sugar makes you sick," Dr. Zamm says, "and you are already suspicious about that, then take this test. Try taking selenium, which is a mineral that binds with mercury, cadmium, and arsenic. If you feel better after taking selenium, it is a clue, not a diagnosis. |

An article by the Canadian Medical Association in 1976 reported that Indians in Northern Canada, who ate more than a pound of fish per day, had symptoms of mercury poisoning. A 1985 study in West Germany of 136 people who regularly consumed fish from the Elbe River found a correlation between the blood levels of both mercury and pesticides and the amount of fish eaten. |

I said, 'This has to be a case of mercury poisoning. This child was perfectly well until he was seven. But I don't see any fillings.' She said, 'Doctor, there is a filling there.' So I got a dental mirror from a colleague of mine and looked. Sure enough, there was a filling the size of a pinhead. I couldn't believe it. I had the filling removed, and within three months the child was substantially improved. This child was genetically polymorphic in the sense that he had a very inefficient oxidation process. |
| In the case of mercury poisoning, there may be enough oxygen available, but the person's body can't burn it because the burning mechanism has shut down. In every case of depression, physical deficiencies and toxic poisoning should be considered first, before resorting to therapy and psychotropic medications such as antidepressants. I have seen hundreds of these cases respond to diagnosis and treatment of the underlying physical cause."
How can mercury fillings still be considered to be safe?
"The answer," Dr. Zamm says, "is that if you did it before, it's okay to do it again. |
| When Matanoski tried to get Aposhian to acknowledge that most if not all cases of clinical mercury poisoning in the past had involved doses hundreds or thousands of times higher than what was administered to children in vaccines, Aposhian insisted that dose was not necessarily important.
"[Toxicologists] no longer believe that the dose makes the poison," he said. Far more important was the developmental stage of the child when the mercury was administered, and his or her genetic susceptibility. |
| If you are tired all the time, and you take 2 5 mg of thiamine once or twice a day, which is a low dose, and you notice you feel better, that is another clue you might have mercury poisoning. Now you have the selenium and the thiamine clue."
"The last thing is zinc. Too much cadmium and mercury in the body will replace zinc in the enzymes. Our bodies have 50 to 75 enzymes with zinc in them. So if you have mercury knocking out your zinc, then you know why it is poisoning you. |

Mercury fillings
Often called "silver fillings" to hide the fact that they're made from mercury, these highly toxic fillings are placed directly into the mouths of children where they are inhaled (mercury vapor) and swallowed, causing systemic mercury poisoning to the child and leading to long-term neurological damage. In one unusual case, mercury poisoning was caused by a child's obsession with making silver bullets.58 It seems the child had a sudden brainstorm, as children will, of making silver bullets by heating a combination of lead shot and mercury from a thermometer. Air samples from the child's home demonstrated mercury levels four times higher than maximal industrial limits. As a result, the child and several family members suffered severe neurological poisoning.
The presence of inorganic mercury and methylmercury in the body together has been shown to intensify the toxic effects of either alone. |

The unintended consequence of the amalgamation process was to kill by mercury poisoning even more Amerindian laborers. Mules or llamas lasted less than twelve months and the surrounding countryside was polluted for a century or more. But the conquista-dores did not know or did not care; they were now newly and seriously rich on the profits of the silver mines.
It is worth noting how horrible the mercury process was. It involved pounding the ore—originally in a pestle and mortar— and then mixing with water until the mud or soft paste formed. |

One of the arguments given by those who defend the safety of dental amalgams is that there is no clear-cut evidence of mercury poisoning from dental amalgams. Certainly, other than the fellows trying to extract silver from amalgam in a frying pan, that is true, yet we also have abundant evidence that the mercury vapor arising from dental amalgams produces in utero levels in babies which can cause abnormal brain development. We also have considerable data relating the number of dental amalgams to toxic levels of mercury in the tissues, levels known to produce organ and cellular malfunction. |

Chelation therapy is the usual treatment method for mercury poisoning, using BAL, DMSA, or D-penicillamine (Ferner 2001). BAL is widely used for inorganic mercury poisoning (Roberts 1999), with D-penicillamine used as an alternative. Other treatments are activated charcoal for gastrointestinal decontamination unless there is evidence of conosive damage in the gastrointestinal tract (Ferner 2001), gastric and whole bowel lavage, and supportive measures. |
