Selenium mostly affects male fertility by maximizing sperm formation, optimizing testosterone production, and increasing sperm count. (For more information on male fertility, see the section titled "Male Fertility" later in this chapter.)

Zinc. The most widely studied nutritional supplement for fertility in both men and women is zinc. Zinc plays a vital role in cell division, and deficiencies are associated with reduced fertility, increased miscarriages, and chromosome damage. |

Other things that interfere with male fertility and sexual potency are animal-based foods— notably red meat and anything that contains saturated animal fat. I've also observed that fried foods seem to be strongly correlated with male fertility problems across the population. I also have no doubt that the consumption of sugar or refined carbohydrates interferes to some extent simply because of the nutritional deficiencies they cause; but I think the bigger offenders here are red meat, fried foods, and unhealthy oils like hydrogenated oils. |

In men, infertility is linked to sperm count. male fertility is dependent on producing an adequate amount of sperm that has proper motility (efficient movement) and that is not deformed or abnormally shaped. Occasionally, men can suffer from retrograde ejaculation, where the sperm travels backwards after ejaculation. Other problems can stem from sexually transmitted diseases, hormonal disorders, inflammation of the testicles, impotence, and complications from previous surgery. Stress and other lifestyle factors can also contribute to infertility in both men and women. |

Prostatic fluid is essential for male fertility.
Normal growth and activity of the prostate gland are under the control of androgenic hormones. Circulating testosterone, primarily produced in the testes, diffuses into the prostate where it is irreversibly converted by the enzyme steroid 5a-reductase type II to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a metabolically more active form of the hormone. Dihydrotestosterone binds to the androgen receptor, and this complex then translocates to the cell nucleus where it activates selected genes [2].

Semen protects sperm and plays an important role in male fertility.
Fertility isn't usually a top priority for most men over fifty, unless they are in a relationship with a woman still in her childbearing years who wants to have children. A more odious condition is BPH. The prostate wraps around the urethra where the urethra exits the bladder. |

Ashwagandha, Asian ginseng, cordyceps, and rhodiola can offer significant benefits for men suffering from erectile dysfunction; this formula enhances male fertility as well.
Animals and people always have relied on plants as a major source of nutrients. In fact, many metabolic reactions in the body require plant-derived food. These plant foods are essential for cellular metabolism and the function of all the body systems. |

Dorris Rapp, MD, a leading pediatric allergist, asserts that environmental and food estrogens are responsible for the worldwide reduction in male fertility.36
For women, female children fed the estrogens in soy formula and products hit puberty early, sometimes as young as age 6 to 8.37 Eating soy products during pregnancy may affect the sexual differentiation of the fetus toward feminization; studies even show malformations of the reproductive tract or offspring born with both male and female sexual organs.38 Kaayla T. |

Although the far-reaching implications of this study imply that GM soy might impact male fertility and the health of human offspring, such speculation is premature without substantial follow-up research. The researchers did, however, conduct a study in which they found an overall reduction in the level of gene expression inside early stage (four to eight cells) mouse embryos from parents fed GM soy. They identified "a temporary decrease in the transcription and maturation of [messenger] RNA."85 More work will be needed to see if this carries any health risks.

Celiac disease may lead ro decreased absorprion of fat-soluble vitamins, thereby causing deficiencies that may impair male fertility as well.
Topical or vaginal progesterone may help normalize menstrual cycles, improve implantation rates, and maintain pregnancies in women with history of repeated miscarriages but should only be used under the care of a physician. |
| Most of the research on vitamin E is pertinent to male fertility, such as making sperm more fertile. In one study, vitamin E was given to both men and women and resulted in a significant increase in fertility, and also assisted the achievement and maintenance of pregnancy in women with repeated miscarriages.29 Other studies show that adding antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, to the diet of animals significantly reduced the decline of regular ovulation related to aging. |
| Additional effects for enhancing sperm count and sperm quality are discussed in the male fertility section.
L-Arginine

Para-Aminobenzoic Acid (PABA). PABA is a part of the folic acid molecule and is found in eggs, milk, meat, and several grains. The role of PABA produced by the body is not really known, but as an oral supplement it is FDA-approved for difficult conditions such as scleroderma, vitiligo, pemphigus, and dermatomyosids. It is approved for use as a sunscreen because it acts as a filter to block out ultraviolet radiation. |

Flavonol formation requires the expression of CHS, CHI, F3H, and FLS, this last gene encoding flavonol synthase, which converts dihydrokaempferol (DHK) or dihydroquercetin (DHQ) to the corresponding flavonols, kaempferol (K) and quercetin (Q), respectively. Little continues to be known on how this branch of the flavonoid pathway is regulated. |

| In terms of drugs, one of the most harmful drugs for male fertility is, in my view, statin drugs. Statin drugs directly block the body's formation of sex hormones (which are manufactured from cholesterol), and without sex hormones, you're not going to have much of a sex drive. If you're wondering why you can't perform anymore, and you happen to be on statin drugs, it's probably no coincidence. This is something that isn't generally explained to patients, by the way, when they're being prescribed statin drugs for high cholesterol. |

| MALE INFERTILITY
Arginine supplementation is often, but not always, an effective measure to improve male fertility. The critical determinant appears to be the level of the sperm count. If the sperm count is less than 20 million per milliliter, arginine supplementation is less likely to be of benefit.
In order to be effective for increased fertility, it appears that the dosage of l-arginine should be at least 4 grams a day for three months. In perhaps the most favorable study, 74 percent of 178 men with low sperm counts had significant improvements in sperm counts and motility. |

Ask animal breeders; they will tell you that raspberry leaves are added to feed to increase male fertility.
Experience with animals also provides another hint for treating human male fertility: oats, which are fed to racehorses to keep them healthy and fertile. As oats are best when harvested during their fresh, milky stage, your best bet is to use a tincture. You may also derive some benefit by eating oatmeal. (It seems that the old saw about men sowing their wild oats has some basis in fact.)
Some plants encourage estrogen production and thus discourage male fertility. |

| Gossypol, a Chinese drug derived from the cotton plant used to inhibit male fertility (as a birth control method) and to treat female gynecological disorders including endometriosis, reduces serum levels of T3 and T4 and increases TSH.32 Side effects of this widely used drug, such as fatigue, muscle weakness, and diminished sexual function, may be secondary effects of hypothyroidism induced by the drug. It may thus have some application in treating hyperthyroidism. |

Arginine has also clinically proven to play a role in male fertility through its action of increasing sperm production and motility.13 It is highly likely that some of the sexual and fertility effects reported were due to maca's high arginine content.
The amino acid histidine also is found in maca root in high amounts. This amino acid plays an often-overlooked but important role in sexual function: during ejaculation and orgasm. |

A CAUTION! Think Twice About Taking This Drug If...
• You have impaired kidney or liver function. People with liver or kidney disease can't clear the drug from their systems as rapidly as others and so blood concentrations may be too high. This is a common concern for elderly people.

(DBCP is one of the few industrial chemicals where there is definite proof of an effect on male fertility. Both it and DES have been withdrawn from the U.S. marketplace.) It is believed, but not proven, that marijuana may have an adverse effect on fertility by lowering a man's production of testosterone.

(When I was in practice in Buffalo in the 1980s and 1990s, some mothers had the "impression " that their son's genitals seemed to shrink when they wore disposable diapers in contrast to their more normal appearance when cotton diapers were used. This anecdotal "impression " proves nothing until it is documented scientifically, but maybe the testis contracted in synthetic diapers to protect that area. |
