| Herbs: Bilberry is recommended in treating macular degeneration. Take 160 mg twice a day standardized for 25% anthocyanosides. Ginkgo biloba improves blood flow and contains flavonoids that support eye structure. Take 60 mg three times a day with 24% flavone glycoside extract. Rutin restores normal collagen metabolism and normalizes eye tissue. Take 20 mg three times a day.

Recent research found that smoking is the leading cause of macular degeneration; half of all smokers develop it. As soon as a person stops smoking, the risk lessens by one third. A major study linked aspirin to America's epidemic of macular degeneration. The often prescribed one-aspirin-a-day routine makes the retinas more likely to hemorrhage. Besides, aspirin belongs to the same class of painkillers as Vioxx, Celebrex and Aleve, all of which were found to increase heart attack and stroke risk by over 50 percent. |

CATARACTS AND MACULAR DEGENERATION: According to one study, people who ate foods high in lutein and zeaxanthin, such as eggs, had a twenty percent reduction in developing cataracts and a forty percent reduction in developing macular degeneration.
OBESITY: A report in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition presented promising research on the possible "hunger-fighting power" of eggs. An egg first thing in the morning may lead to reduced calorie consumption for the rest of the day.

| CHAPTER 23 EOSJ StepS tO StOp macular degeneration
What is macular degeneration? Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a breakdown of the macula, the central part of the retina with your sharpest vision. It is irreversible and a leading cause of blindness.
Who gets it? AMD usually begins in the late 50s or 60s and is likely to occur in one third of people over age 75. High risk factors are smoking, light-colored eyes, longtime sun exposure, high blood pressure, heart disease, and family history of AMD or heart disease.
What are the symptoms? |

Broccoli may help combat heart disease, stomach ulcers, and macular degeneration. Researchers theorize that sulforaphane, which is abundant in broccoli, may combat heart disease and perhaps stomach ulcers by inhibiting the presence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. Broccoli does indeed contain two phytochemicals thought to help eye health, lutein and zeaxanthin, and fend off macular degeneration (an age-related eye disease).
Broccoli may help reduce inflammation and joint pain. |

Macular degeneration. In a 2001 double-blind study, over 3,600 people suffering from age-related macular degeneration were randomly given antioxidants, zinc, antioxidants plus zinc, or a placebo.26 All took their supplements for a little over six years. Compared to placebo, the zinc reduced the risk of developing advanced macular degeneration by 25 percent. Zinc plus antioxidants lowered the risk by 28 percent.
Daily Requirement
The RDA for zinc is 11 mg per day for men ages 19 and up and 8 mg per day for women ages 19 and over. |

They're a great source of lutein and zeaxanthin, two other carotenoids that, when working together, have shown enormous promise in protecting the eyes and helping to prevent macular degeneration and cataracts. Both alpha-carotene and beta-carotene convert in the body to vitamin A, which, in addition to being a great antioxidant and immune system stimulator, tur-bocharges the formation of a purple pigment in the eye called rhodopsin. |

Smoking, poor diet, and obesity all increase the risk, as do high blood pressure and a number of factors that you can't control (like family history, aging, and the newly discovered complement factor H (CFH) gene, which is strongly associated with macular degeneration). But what you eat—and the supplements you take—affect the macula, and research shows that diet and supplements can be used to treat or prevent the condition. |
| But the leading cause of adult blindness and vision loss in adults over sixty is something called macular degeneration. And a few simple supplements can significantly reduce the risk of your ever getting it.
You may recall from high school biology that the retina contains two types of photoreceptors—cones and rods. Cones are the ones that provide color sensitivity, and most of them are located in the central area of the retina in a structure called the macula. |

Point is, you can do really well with supplementing in the 15 to 50 mg range, although for some situations (like macular degeneration or fighting off a cold or healing a wound) it's perfectly okay to use a higher dose for a short time. In general, a basic 15 mg a day seems to help fend off most common problems. Certain seafoods, notably oysters, along with milk, whole grain breads, dark meat poultry, and nuts like cashews also provide plenty of the mineral. |

He diagnosed her that day with macular degeneration. And everything seemed to move in triple slow motion as she made her way back to her car.
Though Mavis was not familiar with this particular problem, she knew she must use the eyesight she had left—and time was running short. She brought herself up to speed by reading everything she could about her disease. If there was a solution to be found, Mavis would find it.
But what she read wasn't good. The books said doctors could do nothing for her but watch her vision deteriorate. And that is exactly what happened. |
| If it is your eyes, you could develop macular degeneration or cataracts. If it is your blood vessels, you could have a heart attack or a stroke. If it is your joint space, you could develop arthritis. If it is your brain, you could develop Alzheimer's or Parkinson s disease. After the passing of time, our bodies can look just like the carpet in front of the fireplace: pretty ratty.

B
Get at least the daily value (DV) of all the Bs plus a little more than daily value of these Bs:
Bj (thiamin) 25 mg.
B2 (riboflavin) 25 mg.
B3 (niacin) At least 30 mg, and you can take lots more after speaking with your doctor if you have elevated lousy cholesterol ortrigylcerides.
B 5 (pantothenic acid) 300 mg.
B6 (pyridoxine) 4 mg.
B9 (folic acid or folate) 400 meg.
B12 (cyanocobalamin) 800 meg.
Biotin 300 meg. |
| The study found that those people who already had wet macular degeneration had a more than
25 percent reduction in their risk of vision loss if they took 500 milligrams of vitamin C, 400IU of vitamin E, 15 milligrams of beta-carotene (yes, carrots are good for your eyes), 80 milligrams of zinc, and 2 milligrams of copper every day in divided doses. P.S.: We think that a lower dose of 30 milligrams of zinc is safer for longer periods of time.

| It has been shown that high doses of beta carotene, as found in carrots, substantially reduces odds of degenerative eye diseases (cataracts and macular degeneration). It also helps with chest pain (angina). The high soluble fiber in carrots balances blood cholesterol and promotes regularity. Cooking has shown to make it easier for the body to absorb the beta-carotene.
